To ask why I can't sit with you?

I keep seeing house makeovers recently with an illuminated sign saying "You can't sit with us."

What's that all about? It doesn't sound very homely.

Is it a quote from a TV show?

OP posts:
KaleSlayer · 05/05/2021 19:55

I’ve seen the film, know the line. BUT how does that explain OP seeing home makeovers with neon signs saying it? Confused

I’ve had a couple of drinks so maybe I’m missing something.
@BrumBoo

Not everyone watches the same films. Shocking, I know. [hhm]
I was mainly jesting about the OP not having watched it.

However, some aspects of pop culture transcends whether you've seen the film/show in question or not. I gave examples of Friends earlier, I've never really watched Big Bang Theory but I know exactly what 'Bazinga' is, or 'I have a cunning plan', or 'Don't tell him Pike'. Some quotes just become part of our lexicon even without original references, so yes I'm surprised the OP hasn't come across any Mean Girls before now.

PeskyRooks · 05/05/2021 19:59

Amazon prime video has got Mean Girls on, also
Heathers
Sixteen Candles
Pretty in Pink
Breakfast Club
Clueless
And!! The Outsiders!
Quality viewing

My person favourite tv quote is 'you're technically correct, the best kind of correct'. 5 points to Griffindor for whoever knows which show it's from Grin.

StellaLeonte · 05/05/2021 20:01

Mean Girls is a classic, get it watched or you’re going in the Burn Book lol. It’s only a bit of fun.

PeskyRooks · 05/05/2021 20:04

Is it IT crowd @BrumBoo?

Quaagars · 05/05/2021 20:06

@PeskyRooks
Loved Heathers too, classic film

Famousinlove · 05/05/2021 20:08

@itssquidstella

Did you mean to say cool but started to say great? Grin
BrumBoo · 05/05/2021 20:08

@PeskyRooks

Is it IT crowd *@BrumBoo*?
If it's used in the IT Crowd, I'm afraid I don't remember it!
RichardMarxisinnocent · 05/05/2021 20:09

@mnahmnah

Mean Girls is to those in their 30s, what Clueless was to us in our 40s. Lots of great catchphrases, fashion and teen stuff you could totally relate to at that age. Still enjoyed a Mean Girls, but it will always be Clueless for me Grin
I'm in my 40s and it's not Clueless for me, it's The Breakfast Club. I was a bt older than teenager when Clueless came out.
DeepNorthFarmGardening · 05/05/2021 20:09

@Evenstar

Surprised that so many don’t seem to have heard of or seen Mean Girls, I am 56 and DD and I loved it when she was a teen in the 90’s . She had a pink sweatshirt with “On Wednesdays we wear Pink”. All her friends loved it too with the cliquey girls getting their comeuppance.
I hate to break it to you but the 90s weren't 15 years ago... Grin

She asked where the quote was from...
Quaagars · 05/05/2021 20:10

Mean Girls was 2004, not the 90s

PerspicaciousGreen · 05/05/2021 20:11

@BrumBoo I gave Friends a go a little while ago and found it SO SO CRUSHINGLY UNFUNNY, but I was surprised by how many times I thought "Ohhhh, so THAT'S where that comes from!" even though I only watched half of season one and then a few alleged "must see" episodes. You're absolutely right that these things worm their way into the general lexicon even if people don't know why they're saying them.

Pepsimirror · 05/05/2021 20:12

You should watch the film OP

Quaagars · 05/05/2021 20:15

Our toddler knows "You go Glen Coco!" Blush
KaleSlayer · 05/05/2021 20:18

She also said she keeps seeing home makeovers with these signs and is asking about them.

CherryCherries · 05/05/2021 20:22

I used "the plastics" saying the other day! Just realised it's in my permanent vocab without realising...

@Luckyelephant1

Is butter a carb?
Never mind - I’m having cheese fries!
SpeedRunParent · 05/05/2021 20:30

I'm in my 40's too and breakfast club and Heather's are more that era. I was a teen in the 90's and definitely had no knowledge of mean girls. I doubt it would have appealed though, clueless certainly didn't.

Babygotblueyes · 05/05/2021 20:30

@GreenandPinkFlowers

* and none for Gretchen Weiners."

Haha, I say this to my dog when I'm eating something she can't have.

Genius!
