To ask why I can't sit with you?

I keep seeing house makeovers recently with an illuminated sign saying "You can't sit with us."

What's that all about? It doesn't sound very homely.

Is it a quote from a TV show?

OP posts:

"Mean Girls is a genius film and if women ruled the world it would be up there in the top 100 films instead of pretentious shite like ‘Apocalypse Now’ or ‘The Godfather’""

FFS, another reason to think I must be a bloke! I thought I was a woman but I love those films. Dammit HmmGrin

I'm mid 30's and never seen Mean Girls, have heard of it but wouldn't have known any quotes 🤷‍♀️ I'm fine with being an "uncool" Mum if that's the case.. my 15yo throws a lot of verbal shit at me but that's not one I've heard from him yet 🤣

It's a great film but don't remember that quote

Royalbloo · 05/05/2021 19:24

It's a piss take of bullies - ironically

Royalbloo · 05/05/2021 19:25

You Go Glenn Coco!

KindnessCrusader · 05/05/2021 19:26

@MsHedgehog I AM WEARING PINK!!! Grin

NerrSnerr · 05/05/2021 19:28

@eekbumbler

I've never seen it, is it because I'm late 40's? I thought it was a covid thing reading the OP. Luckily haven't seen any around here.
Why is that lucky? If people want a sign in their house then good for them? We have decor in our house that is related to Buffy, Murder, She Wrote and a nice picture of Pat Butcher. I wouldn't expect anyone else to like any of it but we do and we live here so that's all that matters.
EsmesRedPetticoat · 05/05/2021 19:28

Ohhhnow I have to watch Mean Girls again!

mamamalt · 05/05/2021 19:28

I'm guessing it's popped up in home decor trends because the people that were teens 15 years ago are now 30ish somethings buying and decorating houses! Like me 😅

Poppytroll · 05/05/2021 19:29

I last watched Mean Girls after reading a men’s net thread about it a couple of years ago. Guess what I’m watching tonight Wink

EnjoyingTheSilence · 05/05/2021 19:29

Fab film. Love it. Wouldn’t have a quote from it on my house though!

Quaagars · 05/05/2021 19:29

@Macncheeseballs

It's a great film but don't remember that quote
It's when Regina is in sweatpants as that's "all that fits me right now" and the rest of them throw her own rule back at her and are like "You can't sit with us!"
RichardMarxisinnocent · 05/05/2021 19:31

@NiceGerbil

'Mean Girls hasn't just suddenly popped back into existence, it's a huge part of pop-culture. 'Stop trying to make fetch happen' or 'it's October 3rd' is no different from 'he's her lobster' or 'we were on a break!'.'

???!!!

I only recognise the last one!

I'm 47. I'm guessing my parents wouldn't have a clue about any of this tbh Grin

I think I might have heard of Mean Girls, but I also haven't seen it and certainly wouldn't recognise any quotes from it. But if it's from 15 years ago and it's a teen film that would be the reason - I was early 30s 15 years ago so would have been rather older than the target audience.
FruityPolos · 05/05/2021 19:38

@MumofSpud

Those signs are fetch!

Saw the musical a couple of years ago ant it was fab

Omg there is a Mean Girls musical?! Googles this frantically I need that to tour near me when the theatres reopen! I have tickets for Heathers the musical in Brighton but it keeps being postponed.
GreenandPinkFlowers · 05/05/2021 19:39
  • and none for Gretchen Weiners."

Haha, I say this to my dog when I'm eating something she can't have.

SpeedRunParent · 05/05/2021 19:41

@BrumBoo

Mean Girls, the original Meme Generator! Brilliant film, so funny and always relatable.
If it wasn't around in the 80's it definitively was not 'the original meme generator' 😂
MintyMabel · 05/05/2021 19:41

Never heard of them. Vaguely aware of the movie.

Which, doesn’t make me any less of a person as you seem to be suggesting.

PerspicaciousGreen · 05/05/2021 19:43

@FruityPolos Noooooooo! I've only watched clips but I thought they were awful! Unlike Legally Blonde The Musical which was a brilliant show in and of itself, the Mean Girls one doesn't add anything new or witty and just rips off the film plus boring songs. Book at your peril!

itssquidstella · 05/05/2021 19:43

This thread is grool.

PerspicaciousGreen · 05/05/2021 19:44

@PeridotEyes

OK, not one single person is saying, "It was crap and I hated it," so I believe you - we don't have Netflix, but I have just ordered it on Ebay for £1.30 inc P&P, so it wasn't much of a risk!
Good on you! I really hope you enjoy it! Just remember that many of its characters are supposed to be awful people, that's the point of the film.

And why not buy yourself some toaster strudel to go with it Grin

Luckyelephant1 · 05/05/2021 19:47

Is butter a carb?

EvilOnion · 05/05/2021 19:50

I'm with you @MintyMabel, I didn't realise it was compulsory viewing!

There are lots of movies I haven't seen because they don't appeal to me - similarly there will be films that I love that others haven't seen/heard of or been interested in.

Evenstar · 05/05/2021 19:50

Surprised that so many don’t seem to have heard of or seen Mean Girls, I am 56 and DD and I loved it when she was a teen in the 90’s . She had a pink sweatshirt with “On Wednesdays we wear Pink”. All her friends loved it too with the cliquey girls getting their comeuppance.

toconclude · 05/05/2021 19:51

@BrumBoo

Not everyone watches the same films. Shocking, I know. [hhm]

mnahmnah · 05/05/2021 19:51

Mean Girls is to those in their 30s, what Clueless was to us in our 40s. Lots of great catchphrases, fashion and teen stuff you could totally relate to at that age. Still enjoyed a Mean Girls, but it will always be Clueless for me Grin
