To think most plus size models are not really fat

I truly think people of all shapes and sizes can be beautiful and it's what on the inside that counts bla bla bla plus it is great that whilst online shopping I an now seeing a mix of body types and curvy big bums and boobs instead of stick thin anorexic looking 14 year olds BUT they all seem to have perfectly in proportion gorgeous curves yes large thighs etc but their stomachs are flat or ever so slightly rounded no rolls of stomach fat to be seen in their bikini pics I know bElly fat is unhealthy and not to be promoted but if we are being truly representative and inclusive of all women if they are modelling plus size surely we should have stomach fat on show too also the images I see on sites like PLT are mostly women with boobs and hips and hardly any flat chested straight hipped women so just creating more unrealistic images to try and live up to. I want to see real plus size with rolls and real small size with barely any curves too otherwise it's still not real life is it or is it?

@PurpleDaisies What it means is that the phrase ‘the average dress size is now 14/16’ should not be used as the reasoning behind moving towards a heavier weight as being the one we see as healthy.

Weight creeps up and before you know it you are stones overweight and then you are telling yourself ‘well I’m just average’

In reality I was an overweight BMI heading to obese and I think that people like me should be acutely aware of this instead of thinking it’s completely ok

Nice body shaming, you miserable cow. Plus size models are overweight, some obese. Where are all these “flat tummy” and “thin” plus size models you’re talking about? It could be angles. I’ve seen overweight women on Instagram angling their bodies in a way that makes them look slimmer than they are in real life. There aren’t many petite models, but tall models tend to be thin or fat or somewhere in between. Seems a little more inclusive now.

Perhaps I am a little old fashioned Purple. Despite having what I think is quite a good figure, I wouldn't impose my flabby belly post-DC on anyone around a swimming pool by wearing a bikini. I am in the "put it away love, no one wants to see it" camp.

I haven't got a problem with + size models and I am sure many of the clothes I have bought from e.g. Bravissimo have been modelled by them. One of my favourite adverts is F&F and I think a lot of them are bigger. Some of these adverts for clothes that have been shown fall into the "put it away love" camp for me.

I'd really love to see what people thought if some companies started advertising their clothing with middle-aged men with their beer bellies hanging out. Why aren't their different body shapes celebrated?

The adverts on the Sweaty Betty site are for sports wear. Don’t you think it’s a good thing to show fitness gear for women of all shapes and sizes? Everyone should be getting active. Or do you think overweight women should wear baggy sports clothes that hide their bodies and are less comfortable for many activities?

As for your “put it away love” comments...Biscuit

I understand what you’re saying and I have seen in other threads people saying “you’re fine at X stone because most people are” when that’s actually overweight/obese.

I don’t think it’s quite the same issue as using plus size models in advertising campaigns. Women need to wear clothes at any size.

I think it would be wasted effort. Men aren't moaning that male models don't represent "real men".

They don't care.

I’ve just been googling and there are plus size male models with beer bellies on boohooman and the Debenhams websites. Granted they’re not “hanging out” but that’s because the clothes aren’t underwear or swimwear.

I think people should be able to wear whatever they want and believe everyone should be able to prioritise comfort in the their clothing choices. (They may not want to all the time but should certainly be able to.) However as someone who does a huge amount of sports and exercise my experience is that comfort, temperature, support, safety and making sure your clothing doesn't prevent your muscles engaging how you intend are all important. The difference between tight leggings and a vest/bra-top or looser tracksuit bottoms and a big t-shirt is negligible in most cases and the only difference is cosmetic.

There will never be a reason why you must expose your midriff. You totally can if you want to, no judgement whatsoever other than maybe a little envy at your confidence to do so. But absolutely no sport requires you to for comfort or performance. I mainly wear leggings and tight vests. I do so because I like the aesthetic. I train with people who mainly wear baggy t-shirts and long loose shorts because that's how they feel psychologically most comfortable. For workouts at home I often wear shorts and crop tops, I'm possibly a bit cooler in those but I also end up with sweat running down my thighs and torso that would have been absorbed by my clothing if I was more covered so I can actually end up less comfortable. Maybe outside where the air would dry the sweat away, it would be more comfortable? But other than that, you don't really need to expose lots of your body to work out. So saying that if they didn't exist bigger people would be forced into physical discomfort just isn't true. It's good they are there if people want them and feel happy in them. But they aren't physically necessary, like most things, they mainly exist for the profit of their producers.

Ohcrapbags · 06/05/2021 10:05

I’m a size 20 and I find it hard to relate to most of the clothing websites.

I have huge boobs and a massive stomach. The clothes don’t look right on me like they do on the models used.

Part of it though is the thought of “oh if I bought that dress I would look better!”

It never makes me look better. I still look like a fat sack of shit whatever I wear.

(And yes I need to lose weight but I need to lose some not so great feelings before I even care enough about my life to do that).

VegCheeseandCrackers · 06/05/2021 10:26

As someone who lost her sister to ED I think your description of women as 'anorexic looking' is disgraceful. If a model was described as looking like they had AIDS or like a cancer patient there would be outcry and ED should not be taken lightly. It's a very serious disease with a high mortality rate.

That aside, at the end of the day whether you are plus size, normal, tall, petite - whatever kind of modelling you do, you're going to look after your body so you probably won't have fat rolls. A lot of the plus size models look a bit more chunky but not fat as such.

QueenPaw · 06/05/2021 10:28

@trancepants except pole fitness where you need sometimes an exposed side or stomach for grip

My dd has been in hospital on a drip twice this past year for not eating, she's a size 8 and she is so bony her collar bone sticks out and her legs just don't look right, women's thighs should have fat on them. (we hope we have turned a corner). Size 8 can be very unhealthily thin, before this latest episode of depression she was a 10-12 and slim. [/quote]
Very sorry about your daughter, hope she is well soon. My point though was, that for most people 14/16 is very overweight. I was just saying that at 5'5" I was still curvy at at size 8, and by no means underweight. I think that this would be true for a lot of women of average height. As with all things, there are exceptions.

It depends on your height and natural build. I’m size UK 4-6 but I’m short and I’m like this despite eating a normal amount of food (3 meals a day and snacks etc). Some women look healthy at a size 8, but tall women might look really ill. I’m sorry your DD is ill. I hope she recovers, mentally and physically ❤️
