To think most plus size models are not really fat

I truly think people of all shapes and sizes can be beautiful and it's what on the inside that counts bla bla bla plus it is great that whilst online shopping I an now seeing a mix of body types and curvy big bums and boobs instead of stick thin anorexic looking 14 year olds BUT they all seem to have perfectly in proportion gorgeous curves yes large thighs etc but their stomachs are flat or ever so slightly rounded no rolls of stomach fat to be seen in their bikini pics I know bElly fat is unhealthy and not to be promoted but if we are being truly representative and inclusive of all women if they are modelling plus size surely we should have stomach fat on show too also the images I see on sites like PLT are mostly women with boobs and hips and hardly any flat chested straight hipped women so just creating more unrealistic images to try and live up to. I want to see real plus size with rolls and real small size with barely any curves too otherwise it's still not real life is it or is it?

And I never said anything less than a size 10 was anorexic when I say those words I am not generalising I am talking about actual anorexic models which thankfully you don't see as much now lots of info out there on this so please don't accuse me of calling thin women anorexic

@JackieTheFart

A size 16 when you’re over 5 ft 10 though is probably not overweight. It’s proportional.

And none of them have ‘problem areas’.

I don’t especially mind it tbh. Models are models - they’re all more beautiful than me, with better proportions. Also they’re all mostly over ten years younger.

I'm 5'11 and a size 16. I'm definitely overweight by at least 2 stone.
HowWeAre · 04/05/2021 23:50

I used to work in head office for a plus sized clothing brand and our clothing sizes started at a size 12 which I found so hard to get my head around when I first started!

HowWeAre · 04/05/2021 23:52

Btw it was a pretty huge plus sized clothing company too! I used to read the photo shoot recommendations that would be sent over to the photography studio and almost all clothing would be recommended to be shot on a size 16 model even though we stocked from 12-36! Confused

HowWeAre · 04/05/2021 23:57

My bad they stock to size 32, but still! It’s much harder for a larger size to visualise what something might look on them when they demand size 16 models.

CorianderBee · 05/05/2021 00:04

Yep, larger but still the ideal hourglass. So, surgery for half of them.

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/05/2021 01:08

Because no one would buy their clothes if the photo showed a realistic picture of a larger woman in a body con dress when her bumps and bulges hanging out all over. We buy into the fantasy that if we buy that dress then we will look like the model, and by standing a certain way and sucking out tummies in, we do.

Then we leave the house, forget, breathe out and look like a cling filmed lasagne.

I say this as someone who has gone from a 10 to a 20 and back to a 10. Whatever size you are, you buy the fantasy.

BlackDaffodil · 05/05/2021 01:39

@PyongyangKipperbang

well done you, that is fantastic 🎉

Cling filmed lasagne 😂😂

I think there is a huge difference in being a size 16 when you are 5ft 10 than being a size 16 when you are say 5ft 1. Many of the model are 5ft 10 or over so a size 16 would probably just look curvy as opposed to overweight.

I'm 5'11" and a size 16. At 15 stone I'm definitely over weight and look it. Overweight doesn't equal curvy, which it what's so unrealistic about plus size models and still as dangerous for negative body image.
merrygoround88 · 05/05/2021 08:02

The height is the clanger here.

At 5ft 3 being a size 14 will likely put you in the overweight category, but at 5.11, you are likely just curvy

trancepants · 05/05/2021 08:25

"Curvy" is the natural body shape of people of a mesomorph body type. You don't become 'curvy' if you are a bit overweight. A mesomorph will be 'curvy' at all weights apart from very extremely underweight or so beyond morbidly obese that their natural shape is hidden. I was 'curvy' with a bmi of 30 and if anything I'm far, far curvier as with a low body fat/high level of muscle bmi of 21. My shoulder/breast/waist/hip ratio tends to stay the same regardless of how much fat I carry. But as a muscular person my shoulders, arms, glutes and legs curve in and out everywhere. (I have a lot of mixed feelings about how muscular I am, obviously I enjoy the strength and health benefits but I'm very aware of how unacceptably 'manly' our culture considers women with healthy levels of muscle.)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/05/2021 08:34

You don't become 'curvy' if you are a bit overweight.

Sadly😔 I lost my curves and became curveless blob😳

I think it should be a different thing in fashion. I would have so used "curvy" all my pre fat life if it were designed for curvy people because normal clothes were an absolute pita. I either couldn't breath if it fit over the waist or it was really loose over the waist but I could breath.🙄

Plus size is plus size.
Different things imo.

PurpleDaisies · 05/05/2021 08:51

The first thing I get are curves under my chin!

KarensChoppyBob · 05/05/2021 08:55

I think you're conflating size with shape OP. Many models are hourglass shaped and you can be very slender with it or very overweight.

Though it's the rarest shape to have naturally and decreasing.

APinchOfLOL · 05/05/2021 09:10

I don't know what the big deal is with beautiful, slim, or tones models TBH. I don't go online and look at clothes and get upset that the model is slimmer or more beautiful than me. That is their job, and they probably have to work hard to look like that.

I went online to buy some sports gear the other day and the company has decided to put plus-sized models, ripples of fat and all, and TBH I left not buying anything. I sweat my butt off trying to slim down and be toned. I aspire to have an athletic body like those modeling the items. I know that sounds terrible, but the models and their sizes detracted from the clothes. I realised that when I look at clothes online I don't really look at the model themselves, it is their slim frame that is carrying and selling the clothes.

PurpleDaisies · 05/05/2021 09:14

Which site is that @APinchOfLOL? Do they sell exclusively plus size clothes?

lljkk · 05/05/2021 09:19

Is this supposed to be a chance to post pics of plus size models who look truly fat & have many problem areas?

Coz they were easily found them with a google image search. They exist.

Are you saying that most of the so-called images are actually the more slender persons? I don't read mags/watch much tv so lots of imagery passes me by.

Goblin74 · 05/05/2021 10:12

I was surprised recently to see plus sized models here looking actually plus sized...

APinchOfLOL · 05/05/2021 10:25

Purple, it is Swettybetty. I know it is awful what I have said, but it is not really selling the items to me.

PurpleDaisies · 05/05/2021 10:29

Sweaty Betty use a wide range of models. Most items are pictured on a variety of body shapes. Are you objecting to them using plus size models at all?

merrygoround88 · 05/05/2021 13:42

I really don’t object to the use of models with lots of different body types. Small, tall, hourglass, apple, pear , athletic etc etc should all be represented.

Equally a range of sizes should be represented.

But realistically we are in the midst of an obesity epidemic and anyone with an overweight BMI should be trying to reduce it so it’s a fine line between celebrating diverse body shapes and making it seem like being overweight is healthy !

motherloaded · 05/05/2021 13:51

Just shows how deluded we are in term of sizes...

They ARE plus-size! You don't have to be morbidly obese to fit into the "Plus size" category.

I am curious, where do slim women fit in your category? Someone like Kate Middleton if you are either perfect when plus-size "curvy" or stick thin anorexic looking?
(Halle Berry is curvy .. nothing wrong with being curvy btw)

PurpleDaisies · 05/05/2021 13:55

Unless you’ve had a name change fail, you weren’t the poster who appears to have been so disgusted with seeing a few plus size models on the Sweaty Betty site that it put them off buying anything, even if the same products were also displayed on non plus sized women. Sweaty Betty are making it seem that exercising while daring to be plus size is a good thing, which it is.
