To think most plus size models are not really fat

I truly think people of all shapes and sizes can be beautiful and it's what on the inside that counts bla bla bla plus it is great that whilst online shopping I an now seeing a mix of body types and curvy big bums and boobs instead of stick thin anorexic looking 14 year olds BUT they all seem to have perfectly in proportion gorgeous curves yes large thighs etc but their stomachs are flat or ever so slightly rounded no rolls of stomach fat to be seen in their bikini pics I know bElly fat is unhealthy and not to be promoted but if we are being truly representative and inclusive of all women if they are modelling plus size surely we should have stomach fat on show too also the images I see on sites like PLT are mostly women with boobs and hips and hardly any flat chested straight hipped women so just creating more unrealistic images to try and live up to. I want to see real plus size with rolls and real small size with barely any curves too otherwise it's still not real life is it or is it?

Just shows how deluded we are in term of sizes...

They ARE plus-size! You don't have to be morbidly obese to fit into the "Plus size" category.

Who are “they”? I can’t work out who you’re referring to.

merrygoround88 · 05/05/2021 14:08

I actually prefer to see clothes on more average sized models - gives me a better steer as to what it will look like on me. At the moment I’ve about another stone to lose to be a healthy bmi and I am sure clothes will look better but it’s more that I want to be healthy. What’s alarming to me is how a healthy bmi means a (small) size 12 for me - we really have lost our concept of the what’s healthy

Gwenhwyfar · 05/05/2021 16:48

"I really don’t object to the use of models with lots of different body types. Small, tall, hourglass, apple, pear , athletic etc etc should all be represented."

That doesn't work for me. If I can't see how clothes would look on me, I need a pretty standard body type. With tall, skinny models, I can at least adjust it in my head. Lots of different body shapes and it becomes impossible. M&S did it once and it was impossible to figure out whether a dress was unflattering or it was the model's shape.

Different body shapes would work for modelling that is not to do with selling clothes though, such as for stock pictures in magazines.

Gwenhwyfar · 05/05/2021 16:49

"I actually prefer to see clothes on more average sized models -"

I don't. There would be too much variety. Best would be my own shape (e.g. via an avatar online) or a standard size and shape.

Stoppissingonmyheather · 05/05/2021 17:29

Ooh an avatar of yourself what a great idea or maybe not... those still asking about the phrase "anorexic stick thin models" if you read all of my replies you will see I do not have the opinion that thin models are this I am literally talking about seriously underweight dangerously thin and yes actual anorexic models from the heroin chic days of the 80s and 90s maybe you wouldn't remember if you were not born then,so read all of my posts. I have no issue with thin or larger women I am not plus size either and I have curves it's not about me.

In the UK most plus size models are a 12-14 but 5ft 11.
"Normal" models are 5ft 8 plus & size 6-8.

rarzy · 05/05/2021 17:44

They ARE plus-size! You don't have to be morbidly obese to fit into the "Plus size" category.

My friend is slim & was a plus sized model for yrs. She's 6ft & her hips are a size 12 but her limbs are much thinner than mine.

Mojoj · 05/05/2021 17:52

No one wants to see swimwear etc modelled by someone with rolls of fat hanging over the bikini bottoms. What's attractive about that? Plus size models are still overweight but are toned to best show off the clothes they're advertising

CounsellorTroi · 05/05/2021 17:57

Does being overweight automatically make you plus size? I'm 5ft 2, 10st 10lb and a size 12.

merrygoround88 · 05/05/2021 18:56

Well @CounsellorTroi that weight puts your BMI in the slightly overweight category (in similar position myself )

APinchOfLOL · 05/05/2021 19:03

I still just don't get it.

Take this advert for example this

She looks tiny. 6 months ago I was a size 14-16, probably twice the size of her. I'd still buy that jumper because it looks nice and hangs well on her. Is it going to look like that on me? Probably not. I didn't look at it and think well, she is not the same size as me, I won't buy it. I could still buy that in a 16, 18.

However, whilst I think of course we should be using plus-sized models, what's wrong with using ones that make the clothes look good?

Sorry, but that H&M ad above for the white T-shirt and jeans is not selling those clothes. They look awful.

minniemomo · 05/05/2021 19:11

The only catalogue I've had which was truly representative was bravissimo which had staff members pictured as well as models, often underwear and swimwear, i salute them as I wouldn't be that brave, some have quite a lot of fat too.

Their clothes fit me really well as I'm big busted

minniemomo · 05/05/2021 19:18

@boobot1

My dd has been in hospital on a drip twice this past year for not eating, she's a size 8 and she is so bony her collar bone sticks out and her legs just don't look right, women's thighs should have fat on them. (we hope we have turned a corner). Size 8 can be very unhealthily thin, before this latest episode of depression she was a 10-12 and slim.

randomer · 05/05/2021 19:21

I long for the day when a 63 year old, short model makes it. Not some willowly creature with boho grey hair, somebody with pendulous breasts, a huge cellulite ass and wide feet.
Throw in a bit of facial hair and a height of 5'1"

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 05/05/2021 19:39

I'd start with buying something that looks OK - if you like the look of overpriced synthetic mix M&S cardies on a woman who is six inches taller than the average UK woman and wearing a size or two larger than her actual size, going by how loose that size 8 is on her - is going to translate to Nora Batty in a snowman suit once it gets put on a size 18.

Violinist64 · 05/05/2021 19:52

An American size 12 is a British size 16.

EmeraldShamrock · 05/05/2021 20:00

I an now seeing a mix of body types and curvy big bums and boobs instead of stick thin anorexic looking 14 year olds
I didn't realise teenagers were modelling adult clothes.
BUT they all seem to have perfectly in proportion gorgeous curves yes large thighs etc but their stomachs are flat or ever so slightly rounded no rolls of stomach fat to be seen in their bikini pics

They're still plus size.
People assume plus size is in the morbidly obese category, it's not it's a 14/16.
Yes I know that's the average size but on average people are overweight.

rarzy · 05/05/2021 20:11

Most models are not average height though

peaceanddove · 05/05/2021 20:15

I've always noticed that even if you're overweight, if you have a flat stomach, clothes look much better on you. Not sure how or why?

I've long thought that the big retailers are missing a trick not labelling clothes with what body shape they suit best e.g. apple shaped, pear-shaped etc.

Wegobshite · 05/05/2021 20:39

@peaceanddove
I’m slightly overweight probably 6lbs but I have a very flat stomach
Even at my heaviest because my stomach was flat and I have a small waist and big hips and boobs I always managed to look in proportion
I have a typical hour glass figure even at my biggest

Imissthegym · 05/05/2021 20:41

I have a flat stomach and big legs (calf to thigh) and I think things look better on those with slim legs! It’s easier to hide a tummy.

APinchOfLOL · 06/05/2021 07:11

People assume plus size is in the morbidly obese category, it's not it's a 14/16. Yes I know that's the average size but on average people are overweight.

I think it depends on your height though. I used to be a size 14-16 after lockdown 1. I am now a 10-12 and a lot healthier and fitter. When I was 14-16 and 2 stone overweight people used to tell me that I was absolutely fine, I wasn't overweight and I didn't need to go on a diet. That is not true and it is not realistic. They were not saying it to be nice. They have got used to people being bigger. When I was younger a size 8 or 10 was normal. If you are that size now people seem to think you have got that way by seriously cutting down on food and depriving yourself.

As a nation, we really need to get our weight down but instead, we are normalising being overweight and even celebrating it and heading towards a size 16 average size creeping up to an 18.

merrygoround88 · 06/05/2021 08:18

@APinchOfLOL I found the exact same thing. I was and still am too heavy but because I was 12-14, I wasn’t considered overweight - my GP did tell me to loose a few pounds though

In reality I didn’t look or feel my best and I was putting myself in the running for diabetes and look at the impact that has.

I don’t believe in shaming people but we should just accept unhealthy weight because it’s the average

PurpleDaisies · 06/05/2021 08:22

What does “not accepting unhealthy weight” actually mean? You can control your own weight but how do you not accept someone else’s unhealthy weight?

PurpleDaisies · 06/05/2021 08:24

@APinchOfLOL I’m confused about your stance on plus size models. You were so offended to see a few on the sweaty Betty site that it put you off buying anything but now you’re saying of course we should use them.
