To think that a Rape Crisis centre should not have a transwoman CEO?

ArabellaScott · 03/05/2021 16:18

Mridhul Wadhwa has just been appointed CEO of Edinburgh Rape Crisis. The job was advertised as for women only. Mridhul is a transwoman (born male) without a Gender Recognition Certificate.

AIBU to think that women survivors of rape and sexual violence should be able to have a female only space?

For anyone questioning whether the post was really only open to women, here’s a link to a tweet with a screenshot of the advert, where you can see it clearly states:

Only women need apply for the above posts under schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010

There are circumstances and jobs where you can legally exclude all those of the male sex, and running a rape crisis centre is one of them.

As has been noted, Wadhwa is both biologically and legally male.

Categorically not a woman.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/05/2021 18:00

If you don't like what a poster says, criticise their post. Calling them an ageist and sexist insult just makes you look stupid.

Perhaps "OK Boomer" is next? Or "bla bla bla but go off" and other inane retorts used when someone doesn't have a very compelling argument. Twitter is responsible for a lot.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 03/05/2021 18:03

MW doesn't want women to be able to have boundaries.

No. That’s what is particularly horrifying about this.

A male person who doesn’t want female people to be able to have boundaries.

In charge of a Rape Crisis Centre.

Isn’t it just!

ApplyWithin · 03/05/2021 18:03

This is the patriarchy folks. They want you to believe (and look how eagerly so many do!) that they do everything better than you - even be better women.

This is the opposite of feminism.

What was it all for?

toocold54 · 03/05/2021 18:05

I don't see the issue with the CEO being male as will not be dealing with the wine directly but think that women should be allowed to request things like counselling to be female only.

I agree with this.

Racecation5577 · 03/05/2021 18:05

I wasn’t aware that trans people weren’t able to be raped Hmm

It is horrifying isn't it. This person has no respect for the law that allows women privacy and dignity after being terribly assaulted. This makes them wholly unsuitable for the role.

If there isn't an issue with the postholder being male, they shouldn't have advertised it as only being open to women.

Absolutely.

CirclesWithinCircles · 03/05/2021 18:07

Transwomen are a very tiny minority within society.

How unusual that one of them has turned up in such a position.

What would the odds of that be? Surely much higher than being struck by electricity or dying in a plane crash?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 03/05/2021 18:07

@Racecation5577

Both dogs and cats are subjected to horrendous cruelty from humans.

Is it discriminatory against dogs that we have separate, specialised cat rescues? Would you insist on sending a cat that was terrified of dogs after being attacked by dogs and humans, to Battersea Cats and Dogs Home?

Or would you understand and have empathy for her needs, and send her to a specialised cat sanctuary to recover from her abuse, where she wouldn't see any dogs?

ChameleonKola · 03/05/2021 18:08

Are you for real? In who’s sick mind do people think that the most brutal, violent assault a woman can be subjected to would cause her to have an orgasm? Such a sick, sick thought.

@Soontobe60, comments like this are one of the reasons many people who’ve experienced sexual arousal or orgasm during a sexual assault feel so deeply ashamed that they just can’t bring themselves to tell anyone about it. Leading to the mentality that ‘if you had an orgasm you must have enjoyed it’, the mentality of ‘if your body became aroused you clearly wanted it’.

You need to listen to actual survivors who’ve been through this, open your ears and shut your mouth. Just because you find it unpalatable doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Do you have any comprehension about the amount of shame you’ve just heaped upon a number of survivors of sexual assault with your disgusting, ignorant comment?

I was speechless initially. You should be embarrassed.

BetterKateThanNever · 03/05/2021 18:08

@ArabellaScott

Finally we get to see a real feminist - finally, a male can show women how we really ought to be doing it!
Not quite, OP. A female can support other females through trauma and horrific experiences. Why is it you're so against that? I do hope you aren't as mysognistic as you sound!
Eyesofdisarray · 03/05/2021 18:09

It isn't transphobic for women to want single sex services for goodness sake!
funny how people are so quick to shout 'transphobia'!!!!!
A nasty attempt to shut down conversation.
Wrong on all levels

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/05/2021 18:09

Not ageist or sexist

It is both ageist and sexist. Hope that helps.

May I ask who suggested this?

Was there a poster actually stating this?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 03/05/2021 18:10

Female?

You think transwomen are female? Confused

How is Karen not sexist? It's a slur only aimed at women.

Oh well, I suppose it is a distraction from the vacuity of your arguments.

Waitwhat23 · 03/05/2021 18:11

Oooft. Using the term 'TERF' really doesn't show you in a good light. Women are being threatened with really awful sexual violence and horrific death threats because they are viewed as a 'TERF'. It really doesn't seem appropriate to use it on a thread about a rape crisis service.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/05/2021 18:11

Oh joy, another poster who doesn't understand biology.

paralysedbyinertia · 03/05/2021 18:11

There's an awful lot of nonsense on this thread about state schools. My dd is happy and thriving in her bog standard comp. She's very confident and articulate, on track to get her string of straight 9s and hasn't ever been bullied for being smart. She couldn't have done any better in a private school. I maintain the view that bright kids with supportive parents will do well anywhere.

paralysedbyinertia · 03/05/2021 18:12

Oops, sorry, wrong thread.Blush
