To think that a Rape Crisis centre should not have a transwoman CEO?

Mridhul Wadhwa has just been appointed CEO of Edinburgh Rape Crisis. The job was advertised as for women only. Mridhul is a transwoman (born male) without a Gender Recognition Certificate.

AIBU to think that women survivors of rape and sexual violence should be able to have a female only space?

Apologies as this is Scotland the following law applies

The Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009 defines rape as 'penetration of the vagina, anus or mouth of another person by the penis without consent'.14 Jan 2021

Still need a penis to commit rape in Scotland.

@BetterKateThanNever

Aw don't I feel special.

A woman is someone who identifies as a woman. A female is the same!

A trans woman is born a woman.

Those without penises can rape anyone- if you don't consent to sex before or during, then it is rape. A very plain concept that we surely can all understand.

You need to lobby to change the law then Kate, we don't make the law.

If there is no penis it is not rape. It is sexual assault .

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 03/05/2021 20:02

If there was a position at a political conference reserved for transwomen, to ensure that this demographic was represented at the table, would I be eligible for it?

Well that has cleared up a lot for me, I absolutely understand where you are coming from

Ah, no, lots of people get this confused. A transwoman is born male, that's the definition. Otherwise there'd be no 'trans' bit.

Just absolutely awful and goes against the wishes of lots and lots of women who have been raped and sexually assaulted and who want to have their care delivered to them by other women. It is the survivors of this trauma who are at the centre of this. They had no say in the awful thing that happened to them, and slowly but surely they will have no say in who provides them the care they deserve to start to process their trauma.

It makes me sick.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/05/2021 20:03

What exactly are they "identifying" with then? GrinWhat is the name for a person of the sex which can produce ova? How are babies made, is it a matter of pure chance who gets pregnant and who gives birth? Can two TW conceive a baby together?

lifeturnsonadime · 03/05/2021 20:04

'A woman is someone who identifies as a woman'.

So Kate, any man can be a woman because they say so.

Got it.

Nothing to see here.

KFleming · 03/05/2021 20:04

Not in the legal sense, in the UK at least.
Although, I agree that most people would generally accept the word rape being used for a wider range of offences eg sexual assault by penetration, or sexual assault.
But rape isn’t what they’d be charged with.

How do I know if I identify as a woman when no one can define woman without using the word woman?

If a transwoman is born a woman then why are they trans?

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 03/05/2021 20:05

Just smile and nod people, smile and nod...

Mistressinthetulips · 03/05/2021 20:05

@BetterKateThanNever

So *@MaxNormal, and @RufustheBadgeringReindeer*, you really think only men, or those with a penis can rape? What a silly concept.
And yet, it's the law.

I'm sure anyone can identify as a trans woman even a biological woman so yes.
TheSuezCanalTugBoat · 03/05/2021 20:05

Anyone defending this appointment is either naive or cruel.

Women and children deserve safe spaces away from men. I am extremely suspicious of anyone who wants to take this right away.

I'm glad to see the "logic" in all its glory, on this thread.

ArabellaScott · 03/05/2021 20:07

Can you explain what a transwoman is, in your understanding, Kate?

OP posts:
Changemusthappen · 03/05/2021 20:07

It is irrelevant if they had a GRC. That doesn't make them a woman. The Equality Act is clear in this regard - a GRC does not mean you have changed your sex. Because you can't do that.

The people heading up the centre need to take a long hard look at themselves and ask themselves why this person, out of everyone, would seek this position. Regardless of if they themselves have experienced sexual assault, they have not done so as a woman and cannot begin to comprehend what it is like to be a woman.

@BetterKateThanNever the legal definition of rape necessitates a penis, so yes I'm saying exactly that

To think that a Rape Crisis centre should not have a transwoman CEO?
HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 03/05/2021 20:07

Oh no, you see, if a woman is anyone who says they are a woman then that would be Self-ID & we don't have that in the auK. Because letting anyone who said they were a woman have access to female spaces would be hugely problematic, wouldn't it? Or are all men trustworthy now?

Leafstamp · 03/05/2021 20:07

@BetterKateThanNever

How sad that you can't understand even the most basic facts of life. Ah well, best of luck to you all in your TERF adventures.
Can I ask what the basic facts of life are please?

Sorry, I think you seem to have misread the article. A woman has been appointed for the role of CEO. Hence why women and children are still safe in her presence.
Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 03/05/2021 20:08

I agree OP.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/05/2021 20:08

Oh are you off somewhere Kate? Cant begin to answer those questions, and just sling some childish insults? Colour me flabbergasted.
