To think cooking a roast every weekend is completely unnecessary

Stems from a conversation I just had, I'm cooking a roast at the moment and mentioned it was the first one I've cooked this year. I love a roast, but just think cooking one every weekend (I know it's Monday) just feels completely unnecessary and takes away from its beauty if you're having every Sunday.

We enjoy one most weekends. Less in the summer.

ChristmasAlone · 03/05/2021 15:33

Sorry, the person I was talking to was surprised that I didn't have one every weekend.

We do love it so once a week isn't too much for us!

DrSbaitso · 03/05/2021 15:34

Well of course it's not necessary. But some people enjoy it and find it a weekly treat that they look forward to.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/05/2021 15:35

We have one but change it. Different veg, different meat, Yorkies or mash, not both. Always gravy though. We're not animals.

PotteringAlong · 03/05/2021 15:35

It’s my favourite meal of the week, and I love having one on a Sunday night all together, it sets us up for the week.

It might be unnecessary for you, but I don’t mind in the slightest!

Diggingaholeformyself · 03/05/2021 15:35

We have one occasionally but there's no way we'd be faffing every weekend with one.

PegPeople · 03/05/2021 15:35

A proper roast is a complete luxery at our house. I love them but if I ate one 52 times a year it would certainly get very tiresome and probably feel like a chore very quickly. The only reason it feels like a treat is because they are not eaten every Sunday without fail.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/05/2021 15:35

It depends whether or not you enjoy it. We usually have a roast. I would class it as delish rather than necessary or otherwise.

VestaTilley · 03/05/2021 15:36

We enjoy it; we do one most Sunday’s unless it’s baking hot out. It bookends the weekend nicely, DS loves it, it’s a good way of eating lots of veg and helps keep Sunday feeling special.

paralysedbyinertia · 03/05/2021 15:36

Surely it's just a matter of personal choice? I mean, if you want to eat a roast dinner every week, someone has to cook it? It isn't necessary to cook any particular meal on a regular basis if you want to.

Personally, I have never cooked a roast in my life, so obviously, I don't think they're necessary at all, but each to their own.

Coldilox · 03/05/2021 15:36

I love roasts, but hate cooking them so we rarely have them

CandyLeBonBon · 03/05/2021 15:36

Lots of things aren't 'necessary'. If you don't want one, don't do one. Everyone is different so whatever floats your boat really!

I love a roast every weekend. I just wish someone else would cook it!

Summer time it's very rare for me to cook one. I may have one of we go out for food on a Sunday or have people over. Although a lot of pubs I won't eat a roast in as I don't think they go to full potential, Toby and places like that are a no as they are always a much better idea than what's served up to you. Roast is just not summer food for me.

OverTheRainbow88 · 03/05/2021 15:36

We have about 5 a year, makes Christmas more special and yummy imo

SunsetBeetch · 03/05/2021 15:36

I find them incredibly boring to both cook and eat, so I mostly don't bother. I was so happy when I was still living at home and my parents stopped bothering every week too.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 03/05/2021 15:37

I love a roast but I would get really fed up with eating one every week.

Kottbullar · 03/05/2021 15:38

I cook a roast most weeks, previously I preferred doing a roast midweek when I'm on my own all day.
Since the pandemic as there's been less going on I've done a roast most Sundays just to occupy my time.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/05/2021 15:38

TBF we don't tend to have them in summer but I still often roast a chicken or leg of lamb but we have it with salads and new potatoes.

This is exactly how I feel I love roasts, but with all the faff and having it every weekend takes that treat feeling away.

Once every few weeks is enough for us

Woodlandbelle · 03/05/2021 15:39

We have one every week (cooked one today as we were out yesterday) yes it's a total faff but I cook enough to do tomorrow too so that give me a break tom after work.
I do like them. I light candles. Use my best dishes etc

WhatAWasteOfOranges · 03/05/2021 15:39

We have a roast most sundays in autumn/ Winter. Love cooking it with a glass of wine - mix up which meat and veggies each week. The boys play footie in the morning then watch sport all afternoon with interlude to all eat together. I love it! Similar but with BBQ’s in summertime...

MarjorieBouvier · 03/05/2021 15:40

I love a roast! But can't imagine having the same thing every single Sunday. Plus Sunday is the only day of the week we all have off so we're quite often on days out or visiting friends (in non-covid times) so haven't got 3hrs to cook a joint.
