To think cooking a roast every weekend is completely unnecessary

Stems from a conversation I just had, I'm cooking a roast at the moment and mentioned it was the first one I've cooked this year. I love a roast, but just think cooking one every weekend (I know it's Monday) just feels completely unnecessary and takes away from its beauty if you're having every Sunday.

We have one most weekends in winter, hardly ever in summer

paulhollywoodshairgel · 03/05/2021 15:40

I feel like I'm expected to do it as my husbands mum has done it for him every week for his whole life! I find it a right chore and don't enjoy it as I'm sick of looking at it once it's cooked 😂

MondeoFan · 03/05/2021 15:41

We have one every Sunday unless we go out for the day or it's above 24 degrees. In the winter I'd say it's every Sunday though.

PegPeople · 03/05/2021 15:41

This is exactly how I feel I love roasts, but with all the faff and having it every weekend takes that treat feeling away.

Am glad to see others feel the same way. I also don't understand why some people I know are so set in their ways that a roast is something that can only ever happen on a Sunday.

Because we cook them so infrequently they can be eaten on any day in our house, if we happen to fancy one on a Wednesday then there is nothing stopping us eating it on a Wednesday. Grin

Love them but too much faff every week. Especially now there's only two of us. My dsis unilaterally declared that roasts = pub when she'd had a gutsfull of cooking them. Worked for her!

romdowa · 03/05/2021 15:42

We have one most weekends during the cooler weather. During the summer we wouldn't have one.

SquigglePigs · 03/05/2021 15:44

I love a roast dinner but we probably only do one once a month, if that. They do take a while in the kitchen and I don't want to be doing that every weekend.

Warrickdaviesasplates · 03/05/2021 15:44

I hate roast dinners and would happily never eat one again for the rest of my life, dh loves them and has grown up having them every Sunday.

We compromise and probably have one every few months, but Dh has to cook it as he's the one who wants it and I find it a lot of faff for a meal I struggle to eat.

I do find it odd that the in laws will happily have a roast every Sunday and seem to look forward to it and think it's a weekly treat. But I'm sure there's many things they would find odd that I do, so different strokes for different folks I guess.

Quincie · 03/05/2021 15:44

I had them when young but then food was less interesting - if I'm making nice meals every night of the week we don't really need a huge roast on a Sunday too

I think it's definitely a generational thing. My nan passed away last year and was speaking with my grandad one Sunday a few weeks after (family stayed with him to begin with) and he mentioned it being the first Sunday besides when they were away that he's not had a roast in as long as he can remember. Other grandparents were the same. My mum cooks one virtually every weekend and my dad also has one every weekend.

The last time we had a roast dinner was Christmas.

noblegreenk · 03/05/2021 15:47

I cook a full roast dinner once a month. We'll also have a Sunday dinner at a restaurant once a month too. I wouldn't want one every week. You can have too much of a good thing

Well what would stop me eating one on a Wednesday would be not being available to cook it rather than an inability to understand that there are other days in the week!

And if we’re on not understanding ‘some people’ I don’t understand why some people don’t understand that other people have different lifestyles and priorities as it seems elementary to me.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 03/05/2021 15:48

Absolutely love roast, although have a veggie one. What is it that people find such a faff about cooking them.? And why is it the one meal that people wouldn't want every week? Nobody seems to object to a curry or a spag bol every week.

mizu · 03/05/2021 15:48

We have a roast once a year - at Christmas Grin

Operasinger · 03/05/2021 15:49

We love a Sunday roast. I cook one practically every Sunday.

nicknamehelp · 03/05/2021 15:50

my dc feel cheated if they don't get a roast on a Sunday in the Winter! Come summer switch to a bbq.

Babdoc · 03/05/2021 15:50

I did one every weekend for 20 years when the DC were at home.
A roast is such an easy thing to cook - no faff or preparation, just pop it in the oven and go off and do something more interesting while it cooks!
We rotated between pork, lamb, beef, chicken, gammon or duck, keeping turkey for special occasions such as Christmas.
The DC loved roasts, and roast potatoes, as much as I did.
Now I’m retired and living alone, I still make roasts, although less often, and either reheat them in surplus gravy for several days of easy dinners, or freeze portions. Yummy!

FilthyforFirth · 03/05/2021 15:50

I have a roast most Sundays. It's what I had growing up so have just continued. I both love cooking and eating it. Get to hide away in the kitchen with music and a glass of wine!

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 03/05/2021 15:50

I cook one most weeks. It’s one of the easier meals to cook, filling and tasty. What’s not to love.

Belledan1 · 03/05/2021 15:51

I do one most sundays depending on weather and one in week. Do wfh though as got time. In the weekit is normally just chops or microwave lamb shank. Helps me get my 5 a day in.

ChocOrange1 · 03/05/2021 15:51

We have one probably twice a month. I don't think its that much of a faff, probably easier than most other dinners I make

PegPeople · 03/05/2021 15:52

I was talking about people I know though. I appreciate many people work mon-fri so Sunday is the most logical choice. Nevertheless over the years several colleagues, some of my friends and other people genuinely seem surprised when we have a roast on any other day but Sunday. It's like we've broken the unwritten rule of it not being eaten on its designated day.

BorderlineHappy · 03/05/2021 15:52

I love a roast and will often do one midweek.
I find it easier as kids are in school and I can cook at my leisure.

userchange856 · 03/05/2021 15:53

I do it every weekend in the winter, it's easy, cheap and delicious. Doesn't take away from the special side of it as we don't do all the trimmings, they get saved for Xmas etc. Also takes the pain away from the weekly food planning having one meal a week pre-thought out! Often have roast chicken salad most Sundays in summer.
