To think cooking a roast every weekend is completely unnecessary

Stems from a conversation I just had, I'm cooking a roast at the moment and mentioned it was the first one I've cooked this year. I love a roast, but just think cooking one every weekend (I know it's Monday) just feels completely unnecessary and takes away from its beauty if you're having every Sunday.

I love a roast dinner. Also although he won’t eat the meat it’s one of the few meals that autistic Ds really enjoys that isn’t dominoes, chippy, kfc or super noodles. He loves a plate of Yorkshire’s, roasties, veg and gravy so sometimes we have one twice a week.

Judgedbycats · 03/05/2021 15:53

My lot would happily eat a roast every day if I cooked it. And homemade yorkshire pudding goes with everything apparently.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 03/05/2021 15:54

We have a roast most weeks, but vary the meat/veg/sides etc. It's a lazy meal really as it's so easy but we all love it and it's still special in its own way.

BeigeFoodLover · 03/05/2021 15:57

I cook one most weekends, until it’s BBQ weather. I love cooking it, and eating it, but then being in my kitchen with a glass of wine and some tv or a podcast is my happy place, especially as we usually have sport before that so Sunday tea is the end to a lovely family day.

I also don’t find it a faff, I just get into the swing and often spend a lot of time chilling with book or tv between.

But I get why people who don’t enjoy making them wouldn’t have them every week.

Comefromaway · 03/05/2021 15:57

We do it as a help yourself. Usually chicken, sometimes beef. Always roasties, peas & carrots. Then sometimes boiled potatoes, sometimes mash, plus 1-3 other veg, yesterday was sprouts, cauliflower and spring greens. Some weeks it might be green beans, swede or broccoli.

Plus yorkies, Ds has 4!

Shoxfordian · 03/05/2021 15:57

We never have one as I don’t like them

poppycat10 · 03/05/2021 15:58

We do it nearly every weekend because it's hard finding something we all like so a roast dinner is perfect.

ineedaholidaynow · 03/05/2021 15:59

Funny how some people say it is an easy meal and others say it is a faff! For those that say it is a faff what makes it that and what sort of things do you cook instead that is easier?

We have a roast most Sundays in the colder months which then provides meat for the next day too which we either eat in a pie, curry or with jacket potatoes

Devlesko · 03/05/2021 16:00

They are necessary to my family, we rotate different ingredients though, so different every week.
Roast veggies are great any night of the week.

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 03/05/2021 16:02

I do love a good roast dinner but I don't want to feel constrained by the expectation of having one every Sunday either. Couple of times a month though, yes please! Counting down the days until I can have one of my mum's amazing roasts. It's been a looooong time.

SpeakingFranglais · 03/05/2021 16:02

Good grief, not every week. There’s so much washing up.

userchange856 · 03/05/2021 16:02

It's not a faff for me as I get my 10 year old to peel the veggies and my DH clears up after, those are the worst bits of doing a roast so it's very easy for me, but I hide away in the kitchen for an hour whilst it's cooking and take all the credit for what looks a big complicated meal Grin

trappedsincesundaymorn · 03/05/2021 16:04

The last one I had was on Dec 25th...the next one will be Dec 25th...Once a year is plenty, can't stand roast dinners.

Roselilly36 · 03/05/2021 16:04

DH cooks roast most weekends, he says it’s one of the easiest meals to cook.

Gemma2019 · 03/05/2021 16:04

I make one most Sundays and don't find them a faff at all. It's the one day of the week I don't have to think about what to cook. They change every week with different meat and different vegetables and I love the fact the whole family loves and enjoys them.

BetterKateThanNever · 03/05/2021 16:05

Not always a full roast but DH and I always have a nice dinner on sunday evenings. We cook it together too so it makes it much less faff. And yes, we do get more than 1 meal out of the chicken Grin

starfishmummy · 03/05/2021 16:05

We have one most weekends. We have different meats, vary the sides and vary what we do with the leftovers. We do a long slow roast (apart from chicken) so it looks after itself.

Think it's a combination of the time and all the components. Nothing is difficult to make, it's just all together.

Mine today is:
Seasoned lamb
Cauliflower cheese
Honey roast parsnip & carrots
Sweetcorn
Braised red cabbage
Roasts with Roasted garlic/thyme/rosemary
Home made Yorkshires

We have a roast (chicken, lamb, beef, pork) at least once a week, not necessarily on Sundays, just because we love roast dinners and they are a very easy meal to make. Then the left overs take care of a couple more meals., so its pretty economical.

Operasinger · 03/05/2021 16:05

I cook extra veg sometimes, as we love bubble and squeak.

omgthepain · 03/05/2021 16:06

I love a roast dinner but we don't have one every week it's a bit of a faff with all the different bits I maybe do one a month

Our local pub have been doing takeaway Sunday roasts tho which are amazing they're £10 per portion but huge and we can feed the little ones from that too so £20 for 4 of us isn't bad at all; I'd struggle to do that at home by the time I've bought a joint of meat and all the extras

We are just hoping they don't stop doing them

HairyToity · 03/05/2021 16:06

I love a roast, only get round to cooking one about every 3 months. Whatever suits you I say.

BoomBoomsCousin · 03/05/2021 16:06

Obviously a roast isn’t “necessary”, but I don’t find having one frequently makes it less special. It’s a sort of ritual for us that helps make the weekend a bit special and is something we all look forward to. And a chicken roast is one of the least expensive meals we do (because, yes, the meat lasts us for three meals).

Tomcullenisahero · 03/05/2021 16:08

I love this type of dinner. I don't think it's hassle at all, I put the beef in the slow cooker overnight so all I need to do on Sunday are the spuds and veg. The juice is all there for gorgeous gravy. Yum.
Maybe putting the meat in the slow cooker doesn't count as a roast but it works for us.

bookworm1632 · 03/05/2021 16:08

Roasts don't need to be a huge faff.

I batch roast veg - carrots/parsnips/onions/potatoes and store them in portion sized bags in the freezer - they last forever - Fish them out the oven about 10 mins before they're done.

No need to defrost - 20 mins from frozen to defrost and finish.

Roasts these days you can buy ready prepared - just shove in oven.

That leaves just the gravy to do which is a 5 min job.
