To think cooking a roast every weekend is completely unnecessary

Stems from a conversation I just had, I'm cooking a roast at the moment and mentioned it was the first one I've cooked this year. I love a roast, but just think cooking one every weekend (I know it's Monday) just feels completely unnecessary and takes away from its beauty if you're having every Sunday.

I couldn't be arsed with a full blown Christmas type roast every week, but we do have a basic roast ever couple of weeks pretty much. I do the meat in the slow cooker tho (either chicken or gammon), and often do a big batch of potatoes which I par boil and freeze, so often just have to cook from frozen. Same goes for yorkies when I bother doing them, I make two pans worth, so they last for a good few future roasts. Do love a roast dinner. We had gammon yesterday and now having picnic tea today with the leftovers, yum!

Comefromaway · 03/05/2021 16:23

We do lots of veg because we all like different.

Ds loves carrots and peas and will eat green beans.

I love peas, mashed swede & cabbage. I like green beans and tolerate cauliflower.

Dd and dh adore sprouts. Dh loves cauliflower and dd enjoys broccoli.

Gingersay · 03/05/2021 16:25

We have a roast every Sunday, it's the only meal of the week everyone is guaranteed to eat, my kids love a roast dinner.
I also use the leftovers for treats for the dog the rest of the week.

Most things are unnecessary if you put it that way.

There's a lady who walks round town barefoot near here. Does that mean shoes are unnecessary? I asked her if she'd ever got anything serious stuck in her foot and she looked at me with a bit of a confused expression and said "no".

No it isn't necessary, because many people never have a roast, but if you choose to that's fine. If you choose to, that's also fine.
People like different things.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/05/2021 16:27

A man getting his just reward from his woman... says a non roast eating man!!??!!

Oddly many women found their way out if the 1950s. As others have said DH makes a good roast, so the more erm, misogynistic view or a Sunday roast isn't ubiquitous!

And yes, I do cook on the bbq! 😁

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 03/05/2021 16:28

I quite like a pot roast too. And they're easy to do!

YouJustDoYou · 03/05/2021 16:29

it's so cheap and easy, gets loads of veg and protein in the kids, and tasty. Soul food.

Spidey66 · 03/05/2021 16:29

We have one every Sunday, love it. A roast dinner would be my final request meal if I was ever on death row.

I don't understand why people here think anyone who lives slightly differently to themselves are wrong or unnecessary or whatever.

Allthegranola · 03/05/2021 16:31

I love a roast! We rarely go out or order takeaway, so it's nice to have a slightly special meal to look forward to.

ChristmasAlone · 03/05/2021 16:31

@Fairyliz

No I love a roast its the highlight of the weekend.

As a matter of interest what do you eat on Sundays? I know a roast takes a long time to cook but its not a lot of preparation compared to some meals. If I am going out I just put the meat in the oven and set the timer, then prep veg when I get back.

We'd usually have something nice that we'd put some effort into, last week we had holubky (the pictures on Google look rubbish and it doesn't sound great cabbage leaves stuffed with mince in a thin tomato sauce but it's beautiful). Most of the time it's stuff that we can put in the slow cooker and just check up on as and when. I was going to do rabbit today in there, but this bit of lamb was massively reduced in Tesco the other day so whacked it in the freezer and.

I think it depends on whether it's a 'roast with full trimmings' or simply a piece of roast meat that you serve with a couple of veg and some potatoes or other starch.

During winter I probably roast something (a whole chicken, pork loin, small lamb joint) 2-3 times a week and do a combination of either simple roast potatoes or mash, or rice. With 2-3 steamed vegetables.

In summer we grill a whole chicken on the BBQ at least once a week.

Fink · 03/05/2021 16:32

We have one every Sunday, unless the weather is really hot and we have a barbecue. I like it because it's one day a week I don't have to think about and plan meals for! Growing up, it was the one meal a week my Dad cooked, and still does, so it's always been seen in my mind as a chance for the women of the family to take a break.

PepeSilviaDoesNotExist · 03/05/2021 16:32

I started slow cooking the meat and I found I do one every weekend now as the meat makes various lunches and dinners throughout the week. Before this I couldn’t be arsed but it makes my life easier in the week so I enjoy doing it now.

AlmostSummer21 · 03/05/2021 16:33

@Belledan1

I do one most sundays depending on weather and one in week. Do wfh though as got time. In the weekit is normally just chops or microwave lamb shank. Helps me get my 5 a day in.
How is that a Roast?
Oblomov21 · 03/05/2021 16:34

Many of ds's football team mums do one every single weekend. I love a good roast, but not too often.

mybonnieliesovertheocean2 · 03/05/2021 16:34

We do roast over autumn and winter with a 3 week pause before christmas. Other than that we move to more seasonal food, BBQ in the summer, salads etc

ChristmasAlone · 03/05/2021 16:34

Oh you mean like you do about not having one 🤷‍♂️

I don't think it's "wrong" to have one every weekend, maybe unnecessary is the wrong word to use. I couldn't care less what people eat on a Sunday do what makes you happy.

Anydreamwilldo12 · 03/05/2021 16:35

We have a roast once a week but not necessarily on a Sunday.
How come though, cooking it seems to take up half your day on a sunday but on a week day it doesn't take long at all. Or is that just me.

minniemomo · 03/05/2021 16:35

Personal preference. We have one most weekends through winter but less so when it's warm as we are out and about more. Sometimes I roast sausages or cook pies instead of a joint

TonTonMacoute · 03/05/2021 16:36

I do a roast every Sunday, have done for the last 25 years and am not bored by them, nor do I find them unnecessary.

It suits me as they are incredibly easy to do, I could do them in my sleep. More or less the only work is to peel some potatoes.

DungeonKeeper · 03/05/2021 16:37

I like a roast but don’t want one every week, it would get boring.

There are other treat meals we can make, today we’re making pizzas in the pizza oven, for example.

Yorkshire puds always feature in any roast we make, I’m not precious.

HowWeAre · 03/05/2021 16:37

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone didn’t have one every weekend but it’s a nice thing to have. We don’t have them once the weather starts getting warm because I’d get far too sweaty cooking, but once it hits autumn we have one every Sunday. Then we lay off them a few weeks before Xmas.

Standrewsschool · 03/05/2021 16:38

We have a roast every Sunday during winter, and barbecues in the summer. We get the meat from the local butcher, and vary what we have. We enjoy having this family meal altogether.

Thenose · 03/05/2021 16:38

I wouldn't make a 'fancy' roast every week (pre-boiled potatoes, homemade Yorkshire puddings etc), but I make a simple roast most weeks through the cooler months. Not necessarily on a Sunday. Everyone likes it, it takes about an hour and 15 all in, and it requires less prep than most of the other dishes I do so most of that time's spent watching tele.

I wonder whether those posters implying that it's laborious are making (or avoiding) Christmas Dinner style spreads every week.

Also, who gets fed up with dipping roast spuds in real chicken gravy? Wash your mouth out.

Exhausted4ever · 03/05/2021 16:39

@Forwardroll

One veg?! That's not a roast!! It's got to have at least 3!

Who said? The French seem to do it quite well.

Me, Queen of the roasts, also not French, just like the roast dinner isn't. Wink
