To think hairdresser shouldn't have done this?

Had my hair done yesterday for the first time since lockdown. When I first went in the hairdresser was holding her phone up like she was taking a picture of me, I didn't say anything because I wasn't fully sure she was taking a picture or just checking her phone if you know what I mean?

But then once I'd had the colour done she stood there again behind me with her phone pointing at my head. I asked "are you taking a picture?" and she was like "yeah, don't worry, it's just the back of your head, it's just nice to be able to see the before and after you know?" She said it in a way that made me feel it would be really unreasonable to be uncomfortable with it, so I didn't say anything else.

But AIBU to think she shouldn't have taken my photo without asking me??? I was a bit shocked at the time so didn't say anything but now I'm a bit annoyed about it... I don't really want my pic posting on the hairdresser's facebook page even if it is just the back of my head? Confused

This wouldn't bother me - it is surely the way she advertises her work

Yes I get that, I suppose I just feel like it's a bit weird to take someone's picture without telling them what you are doing and making sure they're OK with it.

I mean, she should have asked, but I really couldn't get worked up over someone taking a photo of the back of my head.

ASandwichNamedKevin · 03/05/2021 11:55

I would not give permission for my photo to be on her Facebook page, and would ensure that was not her intention.
She could easily start the consultation with a 'let's take a before and after pic so you can see the difference' and later can ask if you're happy to be used for advertising photos (with no hint of reproach if you're not).
Tbh I'd be put off already that she'd taken a photo without permission.

PegPeople · 03/05/2021 11:56

It honestly wouldn't bother me at all. Yes she probably should have asked but given its the back of your head I really couldn't get worked up about her having pictures to show her work.

Sally872 · 03/05/2021 11:56

She should have asked. But I would never say no especially if only back of head and I like my hairdresser.

CoRhona · 03/05/2021 11:59

DS2 (teen) was asked by the hairdresser if it was ok for her to take a pic of the completed cut and use on social media.

He was very flattered that she'd asked him!

user648482729 · 03/05/2021 12:01

I’d expect to be asked even if it was just the back of my head

Alternista · 03/05/2021 12:02

She should have asked.

mn81987 · 03/05/2021 12:02

It's to show off her work and it's also an insurance policy, you wouldn't believe the amount of people that go home and do something else to their hair then ask for a refund! If she has a before and after pic then she can prove everything was good when you left.

autumnboys · 03/05/2021 12:03

My old hairdresser used to do this and I longed to end up on her SM, never did though.

TheSmallAssassin · 03/05/2021 12:10

She should definitely have asked first and should get explicit permission before putting it up on social media. Not sure why other people are trying to minimise this, it's perfectly okay and normal to have boundaries, in fact it's healthy!

EverythingRuined · 03/05/2021 12:12

I really wouldn't have given this a moments though as it was the back
If your head but it would have been better if she had asked. I can't imagine anyone would refuse though?

EverythingRuined · 03/05/2021 12:13

Thought*

Franklydear · 03/05/2021 12:17

My hairdresser often takes pictures of her work, she will ask if she likes to use them for anything

This^

It's different but I'm a dog groomer and take loads of before and afters of dogs as you would be surprised how many people cut in to it after or that and then try and claim a refund.

She may have no intention of putting it on her SM. However, if it makes you uncomfortable you should have said at the time when you asked if she was taking a photo

FrankButchersDickieBow · 03/05/2021 12:21

Wouldn't bother me whatsoever, but you really should have said something instead of being submissive.

Moonpeg · 03/05/2021 12:24

My hairdresser done the exact same thing. It didn’t bother me in the slightest. You can’t see my face. Why does it bother you

Dunderblue · 03/05/2021 12:25

It's really about how you feel. In this case I think the hairdresser was completely in the wrong. It's fairly common now for hairdressers to take photos of the before and afters to advertise on their facebook pages and to put in their portfolios or even just keep for reference if someone asks if they can do that style for them. But she should have asked permission to take those photos and let you know what she intended to do with them. It doesn't matter that it was just the back of your head.
If you feel uncomfortable about it I would call and ask for the photos to be deleted and not used.

Moonpeg · 03/05/2021 12:26

I was also very flattered as many people said it was beautiful and asked for the same colour

KizzyMoo · 03/05/2021 12:26

She's rude op. I'm a hairdresser
why would she not use her big girl words and ask you. She doesn't care what you say that's why.

Tuesdaysintheazores · 03/05/2021 12:27

YANBU she should have asked first

silverstrawberry · 03/05/2021 12:27

Good manners would have been to ask first

nonaomi · 03/05/2021 12:28

My hairdresser does this and it bothers me. He doesn't ask and last time made me stand at different angles for a good 10 minutes while his assistant and him tried to get a good shot. They also used one of those big round lights. I was uncomfortable and it took ages. I should have said something, but I didn't.

nokidshere · 03/05/2021 12:33

Maybe she should have asked first (although how come you didn't know they did this?) but after she told you you still didn't say anything so that's on you really. Maybe email ahead next time and make it clear you don't want pictures (and to take down any they've ready used) if you are unable to do so in person.
