To think hairdresser shouldn't have done this?

Had my hair done yesterday for the first time since lockdown. When I first went in the hairdresser was holding her phone up like she was taking a picture of me, I didn't say anything because I wasn't fully sure she was taking a picture or just checking her phone if you know what I mean?

But then once I'd had the colour done she stood there again behind me with her phone pointing at my head. I asked "are you taking a picture?" and she was like "yeah, don't worry, it's just the back of your head, it's just nice to be able to see the before and after you know?" She said it in a way that made me feel it would be really unreasonable to be uncomfortable with it, so I didn't say anything else.

But AIBU to think she shouldn't have taken my photo without asking me??? I was a bit shocked at the time so didn't say anything but now I'm a bit annoyed about it... I don't really want my pic posting on the hairdresser's facebook page even if it is just the back of my head? Confused

This happened to me at a makeup counter a long time ago so not a phone. I only went in to buy a lipstick and she whipped a camara out with no warning, snapped and hid it back under counter. I must admit it was unsettling.

My hairdresser does this but she asks and shows you the photo too. She does ask if you are happy or do you want another photo done and that it is going online. They appear on her hairdressing Instagram but no details as to the client, just what she has done so brassy blonde to blonde, colour correction or at the moment lots of root touch ups.

I had my hair done a couple of weeks ago and honestly my hair looked amazing. She also sent me a copy of the photo. She should have asked you but it is only the back of your head. Different if you can see the front in the mirror.

for those it wouldn't both - fine, but for those it would bother - just ask. If you can't tell who it'll will bother and won't bother, ask everyone, it'll take literally 15 seconds

I agree with you OP - it’s bad manners to take photos of your work on a customer to advertise and not ask them if they agree! Even if it’s just the back of your head.
My nail technician has photographed my hands many times in the past to post photos on social media but she always asked me if it was ok before she took photos and explained to me how she was going to use them.

Shocked that so many hairdressers are doing this, it's a huge invasion of privacy

Livelovebehappy · 03/05/2021 14:52

My hairdresser does this sometimes if she has had to do something different to the norm. Just for advertising I guess. I had my hair streaked pink last year and she photo’d it. TBH she had so many other online pics, and it was just the back of my head, it really wasn’t a problem for me.

@nonaomi

My hairdresser does this and it bothers me. He doesn't ask and last time made me stand at different angles for a good 10 minutes while his assistant and him tried to get a good shot. They also used one of those big round lights. I was uncomfortable and it took ages. I should have said something, but I didn't.
I don’t understand this? Someone taking a pic of the back of your head without you realising is one thing as you won’t necessarily know, but making you stand up while they get different angles means you must have absolutely known it was happening- why didn’t you say no, or refuse to stand up! Madness.

Of course in any event the hairdresser should ask, but the above example seems bonkers.

MimiDaisy11 · 03/05/2021 15:10

I wouldn't be bothered about such a photo of me being up if it's just the back of my head, but I'd expect to be asked. I think it's really rude not to.

Flobbertybillop · 03/05/2021 15:15

No, you aren’t being unreasonable, and I don’t understand why people don’t get this. You have every right to say you don’t want your picture taken, and if someone doesn’t like that, that’s their problem and not yours.
She should have asked for your permission

Teeshirt · 03/05/2021 15:20

It breaks the advertising standards rules too if your photo is used to advertise and promote their business. They have to get your explicit permission.

CoffeeWithCheese · 03/05/2021 15:36

I usually get an 'ooh that's turned out nice - mind if I grab a photo' which later appears on the FB page. I don't mind at all - the back of my head is a regular on there as I'm always letting her muck about with adventurous colour options on it and it's kind of something she's really known for. Think I'm on there as blonde, pink, purple and I really fancy a pinky red next.

TillyTopper · 03/05/2021 15:40

Mine takes pics before and after (front/back/side) and uses some shots on instagram of her work. She always asks first though.

IntermittentParps · 03/05/2021 15:52

Another stylist came over and said let me take a photo after the cut was finished, I had no idea why until I saw it on the Facebook page!
Could you not hazard a guess as to what it would be used for? or, you know, ask?

Why didn't you?

All these grown adults who won't just say 'what are you taking that for?' or, in the case above, won't just refuse to pose for ten minutes while they faff. Do you generally let people push you around?

noblegreenk · 03/05/2021 15:58

She should've asked you first. Maybe I've been watching too much Line of Duty, but for all she knows you ould be in a witness protection programme or you could've escaped domestic violence.

BetterKateThanNever · 03/05/2021 16:27

My hairdresser did the same but she also took photos while my hair was being washed and while i sat in front of the mirror looking like a worm with colour on my hair. I'd happily let her take photos of before and after or even just my hair but I don't want my worm face on instagram!

Like I said I don’t use social media and this was 8-9 years ago when it was less common for hairdressers to have a page on Social Media, Very few of my local hairdressers had a FB page back then. Even then it was usually just a business listing with a few photos, if at all any!
(You would have to look for written reviews to find out if they were any good)

Nothing like it is today.

So No, it absolutely didn’t cross my mind that it was for FB. In hindsight I should’ve asked at the time but I just thought maybe it was for their own portfolio or something!
I only found the page and picture when I was looking for reviews after my shit haircut.

Even if 'just' for their portfolio, would you still not want to know what they were using it for, and to be asked permission? Confused
