WIBU to call the skip hire place?

So, long story short:

Next door asked whether my car parking space (advertised for as "allocated parking" when I moved in) could be used for a skip for a few weeks and they'd give me their parking space instead. This is an area with very little parking space. Skip was filled within a day and stood there, filled and not touched, for a good few weeks.

Almost every day I came home neighbour was parked in their space despite the promise after skip arrived and after a few times of knocking and asking to park up I felt silly and started to give up, but asked when the skip would go - I was told the Easter weekend. In the meantime, I was left to either park my car on the pavement or across a dropped kerb behind the skip.

Nothing happened for two more weeks, so I approached the couple again and got told they don't know when it was to be removed; they thought it would have gone by now. I was fine with it and asked them to keep me updated. Another week, another "it should have gone by now". Then I saw the partner out in the garden, asked again and we ended up having a coversation where I asked them to phone the company and take it away as I know some will deliberately leave the skip to save on storage space. At no point was it mentioned that the thing was still needed and he seemed to be okay with ringing them up.

More time passed and the neighbours had by now fully taken ownership of their space back while the skip was still in my space. So, having had these conversations 3 times now and always having been told they thought it would have been collected by now I decided to take matters in my own hand and phone the company. I made it clear that I was a neighbour, NOT the couple themselves.

A day later the skip was gone.

Forward another 1.5 weeks and I am having a frothing neibour standing at my door threatening me with just about everything because they now need to hire a new skip as the builders hadn't finished. They want their money back from me.

AIBU to have stood my ground? Yes, I shouldn't have phoned without another confirmation with them, but a) they were taking the absolute piss and b) they kept telling me it should have been collected, not to mention c) the company took the skip back without confirming with them as well.

Absolutely call the skip company and tell them not to put it on your drive. Bloody cheek of your neighbours. And as for threatening to get you kicked out, what on earth for? No landlord would kick out a good tenant because they won't let their neighbours use their drive for months on end.

thenightsky · 13/05/2021 12:02

Can you just leave your car in the space, or offer the space to a friend who doesn't need to drive anywhere all day?

Shannith · 13/05/2021 12:04

And in what earthly way do they think they can make you lose your rented house?

Imagine then trying to explain that..well the skip was in her allocated parking space and had been there for 3 months...

And do you have written proof this was agreed? Errr

Empty, laughable threats. Absolutely no landlord is going to pay them any attention. Do you pay your rent in time? Keep the property to an expected standard? Well then.

If a skip appears in your space phone company, tell them it's not the neighbours property and that you have not given your consent and they will move it. As they quite rightly did when you phoned the first time.

Don't like conflict? Nor does anyone. However never let bullies win. If the have a go - walk in your house and shut the door.

They are wankers of the hugest order. You are 100% in the right.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 13/05/2021 12:07

Surely your landlord won't want a skip to be left on the parking space which goes with their property, as if it stays there for too long it will be there when you move out & they need to get a new tenant in.

ladycarlotta · 13/05/2021 12:12

bloody hell! Can't believe they are trying this again. There is no way you are going to get thrown out of your house for this, the LL and the agent will take your side, not theirs.

ladycarlotta · 13/05/2021 12:16

PS I would also approach the landlord and agent with the thought very firmly in your head that:

  • your rent includes use of that parking spot, it's yours while you live there just as much as the house is.
  • these random neighbours who don't own the land do not get to deprive you of it for any reason. Being homeowners does not make their claim superior to yours, as they seem to believe.
  • and if the LL/agent decide they can use the space, they need to reduce your rent commensurably.

But it absolutely will not come to that. What total shits.

Ohdobequiet · 13/05/2021 12:21

I’d definitely be leaving my car in my space tomorrow.

user1471538283 · 13/05/2021 12:22

I'd let them contact your landlord. Honestly the entitlement of some people. My friend has this a bit with her parking spot. Because she doesn't use it unless she has visitors some neighbors think it is extra for them to use even though she pays for it!

You were more generous than I. I would have got it gone within a week or two. Do not give them any money and next time refuse to let them have the skip on your spot.

MrKlaw · 13/05/2021 12:32

all this for a bit of extra convenience vs asking the builder to drop stuff in the skip round the side of their house. Blimey!

Xiaoxiong · 13/05/2021 12:37

I just can't believe the entitlement of some people. You are 100% in the right OP and any landlord would back up their tenant in this situation! In fact it might be worth a pre-emptive email to the landlord letting them know you're trying to protect their parking space from the cheeky fucks next door.

PineappleWilson · 13/05/2021 12:54

Just pondering how they'll know who your landlord is. Not sure I'd know how to find out.

Herecomesspring1 · 13/05/2021 12:57

Unbelievable CF!!

Has a new skip arrived today?!

Iusedtoliveinsanfrancisco · 13/05/2021 12:57

Call the skip company and tell them the same spot is not available or leave your car there

ginandvomit · 13/05/2021 13:12

If you have to move your car today can you put cones out or get a friend to block your space instead?

thehorsealreadybolted · 13/05/2021 13:18

Any skip yet op? What action have you taken to prevent it today? I have no life and this thread is keeping me entertained today

wdmtthgcock · 13/05/2021 13:20

They also told me the new skip would arrive in the parking space again tomorrow. We will see.

WTF??? Surely not in your parking space????
No way.
I'd be leaving my car in the space all day so that they couldn't put the skip there

JustinOtherdad · 13/05/2021 13:26

"I'm going to have to start charging you rent! Hahahaha..." Glare

mynameisbrian · 13/05/2021 13:31

Leave your car in the space tomorrow. Speak to your landlord about the ongoing issues too

NoMLMbots · 13/05/2021 13:39

Hi

I was happy to help you out and the agreement was for a few weeks. I continually chased you to find out when the skip would move. YOu didn't get it moved. When you get your next skip pop on your parking space so it doesn't inconvenience anyone else.

Goodbye.

mynameisbrian · 13/05/2021 13:43

I would also call the skip company now too and state they cannot put the skip back on your car parking spot.

MattHancocksPrivateNurse · 13/05/2021 14:07

OP what awful neighbours you have.

  • Park you car in the space
  • Contact your LL or letting agent now and explain the situation so if they are contacted they can support you
  • Ring skip company and tell them they are absolutely not allowed to use the space
  • Keep us updated :)
NeedNewKnees · 13/05/2021 14:08

Has the second skip turned up yet?

GreyStairs · 13/05/2021 14:10

Bloody hell, they clearly lied to you.
If you’re in calmly tell the skip people that is your parking space and you don’t give permission. No way will they risk getting in trouble. Better still get a friend, or anyone one from MN to come and park in your space for you.
If the skip is there when you get home phone the skip hire company every hour until it’s removed, they’ll soon remove it.

Start keeping a record if you haven’t done and speaking to the police now seems advisable as well as giving your landlord a heads up. They won’t want their space damaged by a long term skip either.

GreyStairs · 13/05/2021 14:10

@mynameisbrian

I would also call the skip company now too and state they cannot put the skip back on your car parking spot.
Actually this is good advise to pre-empt it. Just say you think there is some misunderstanding but you do not give permission for your space to be used.
ivykaty44 · 13/05/2021 14:14

Make sure your car is in the space so they have to use their own space
