WIBU to call the skip hire place?

So, long story short:

Next door asked whether my car parking space (advertised for as "allocated parking" when I moved in) could be used for a skip for a few weeks and they'd give me their parking space instead. This is an area with very little parking space. Skip was filled within a day and stood there, filled and not touched, for a good few weeks.

Almost every day I came home neighbour was parked in their space despite the promise after skip arrived and after a few times of knocking and asking to park up I felt silly and started to give up, but asked when the skip would go - I was told the Easter weekend. In the meantime, I was left to either park my car on the pavement or across a dropped kerb behind the skip.

Nothing happened for two more weeks, so I approached the couple again and got told they don't know when it was to be removed; they thought it would have gone by now. I was fine with it and asked them to keep me updated. Another week, another "it should have gone by now". Then I saw the partner out in the garden, asked again and we ended up having a coversation where I asked them to phone the company and take it away as I know some will deliberately leave the skip to save on storage space. At no point was it mentioned that the thing was still needed and he seemed to be okay with ringing them up.

More time passed and the neighbours had by now fully taken ownership of their space back while the skip was still in my space. So, having had these conversations 3 times now and always having been told they thought it would have been collected by now I decided to take matters in my own hand and phone the company. I made it clear that I was a neighbour, NOT the couple themselves.

A day later the skip was gone.

Forward another 1.5 weeks and I am having a frothing neibour standing at my door threatening me with just about everything because they now need to hire a new skip as the builders hadn't finished. They want their money back from me.

AIBU to have stood my ground? Yes, I shouldn't have phoned without another confirmation with them, but a) they were taking the absolute piss and b) they kept telling me it should have been collected, not to mention c) the company took the skip back without confirming with them as well.

Go to work in a taxi. Might be hassle abs expensive but if your car is there they can’t dump the skip there again. I’d also ring the company and leave a message for them that is it not to be placed in your private space as they do not have permission.

Robotcustard · 13/05/2021 06:48

You need to speak to your landlord, I suspect they’d rather keep a well paying tenant happy than your CF neighbours. Plus I’m thinking this kind of tw*t would start parking in your space if the skip was put in theirs.

herecomesthesunagain · 13/05/2021 06:53

Your LL isn't going to be happy that the neighbours are putting a skip on his property without permission. He certainly won't evict you over it.

You should let him know. What if the skip company damage the drive? You don't want to be held responsible for costs.

Tossblanket · 13/05/2021 06:54

Hahaha, as they're such cheeky cunts.

I'd have seen it as an opportunity to have a declutter and filled it for them.

Unbelievable.

partywalladvice · 13/05/2021 07:02

In addition to the great advice above, I would also put in writing that

  1. You previously gave permission for a skip to be there until xxx date on the basis they allowed use of their space which they failed to do so.
  2. Xxx time passed since the agreed date and the skip was not collected. During multiple conversations, they placed the blame on the company for not collecting
  3. As right of use of space is yours, the timeframe for the original agreement had passed and the company seemingly did not listen to their requests to move it, you arranged for it to be moved so you could reclaim your space.
  4. Most importantly you do NOT give permission for any future skips to be placed in your space and request that they use their own allocated parking as you require yours.

Request that all future discussions on the matter are in writing as you feel intimidated and end that you will be reporting any harassment towards yourself on this matter to the police

If you have neighbours email, I would email this to them and LL and follow up with a copy in their letterbox

TheGoodEnoughWife · 13/05/2021 07:07

They are awful CF!

Well done on calling to skip company, they were taking the piss.

As others have said, can you leave your car in the space today? Even if you have to go to work it will be worth the taxi fare.

Beautiful3 · 13/05/2021 07:10

They lied to you. They didnt give you their space, it wasnt quick and they said it should have gone by now!!! You absolutely did the right thing. It's your space, you were kind enough to have allowed it to happen at your inconvenience for a few weeks, by parking elsewhere. I would have done the same thing as you. Ignore them and never allow it to happen again, say no next time.

katmarie · 13/05/2021 07:16

They're cfs definitely. If the skip couldn't go in their parking space, then it would have had to go on the road I'm guessing, which would have meant having to get a permit to put it there, which would be an extra £50 or more on the cost of the skip. If a skip turns up in your space today, call the skip company and insist they move it.

partywalladvice · 13/05/2021 07:16

If you ever happen to feel any sympathy for them, just remember how little respect they have for you in how they prevented use of their space as originally agreed and then they have the nerve to abuse you and threaten to get your LL to evict you because you simply want to use what is legally yours to use.

They are very nasty people who think they are better than you. I personally wouldn't even consider doing them a favour in future

MangoBiscuit · 13/05/2021 07:39

Fuck that shit. I'd call the company again, now, and tell them that they do not have permission to put a skip in your spot. If it turns up anyway, I'd call and have it removed straight away. I would also keep a log, and report any harassment to the police.

Doghead · 13/05/2021 07:42

They're cheeky twunts. Don't let them bully you.

You gave them and inch and they took a yard. No more bending over for them. You don't owe them a penny. If they want another skip they can put it in their own spot.

icelollycraving · 13/05/2021 07:42

I’d be calling a cab to take me to work and leave the car there. Obviously you shouldn’t have to but they are twats. Can you install a penguin bollard? Wink

Zzelda · 13/05/2021 07:46

I assume you're ensuring that the parking space will be occupied when the skip arrives?

Don't worry about threats to get you evicted, there are no legal grounds to do so. If they want payment, tell them to credit it against rental for the parking space.

MrMeSeeks · 13/05/2021 07:49

Leave your car there so they can’t Grin

MsSquiz · 13/05/2021 07:49

Well your first mistake was to not smile sweetly when they started shouting at you for calling the hire company and saying "but you said you were waiting for it to be removed?"

Leave your car in your parking place today and don't interact with them again. CFs never learn their lesson!

MsSquiz · 13/05/2021 07:51

Oh, and they wouldn't have a leg to stand on to have you evicted!

Are they going to tell your landlord you let them use the space, they took the piss, you had it removed so they want him to evict you?! Hmm idiots!

StreetLightsHoney · 13/05/2021 07:55

Don’t let them put a new skip in your parking space! Block it at all costs.

BerylReader · 13/05/2021 07:56

I’m with the posters who’d have a row back. Why should you have all the inconvenience? They are indeed most CF

Dizzy1234 · 13/05/2021 07:58

Update us later op, I'm weirdly invested in skipgate 😁

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/05/2021 08:00

It may be a weird thing to say, but they really remind me of the policemen in Enid Blyton books - the ones who were given a little power and then assumed it automatically gave them full importance in everything and, by that token, made everybody else of no importance at all.

mn81987 · 13/05/2021 08:03

Honestly I'd be booking the day off work and sitting the space all day!

Soubriquet · 13/05/2021 08:06

If the skip is put in your space, call the company and get them to move it

Or call them now and let them know that you do not give permission for the space to be used

AhNowTed · 13/05/2021 08:07

You should never have been put in the position of having to ask them to move their car.

If my neighbour did me such a favour, no way would I occupy that space and inconvenience them all over again.

They are fucking unreal!!

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 13/05/2021 08:11

when I come home at 8am on a Sunday I'm not unconsiderate enough to knock a family out of bed.

You are too kind to very unkind people, OP. I would have stood with my finger on the bell till they got up! It’s a sad fact that CFs like this will take advantage of good-natured people like you. I hope they leave you alone from now on.
