WIBU to call the skip hire place?

So, long story short:

Next door asked whether my car parking space (advertised for as "allocated parking" when I moved in) could be used for a skip for a few weeks and they'd give me their parking space instead. This is an area with very little parking space. Skip was filled within a day and stood there, filled and not touched, for a good few weeks.

Almost every day I came home neighbour was parked in their space despite the promise after skip arrived and after a few times of knocking and asking to park up I felt silly and started to give up, but asked when the skip would go - I was told the Easter weekend. In the meantime, I was left to either park my car on the pavement or across a dropped kerb behind the skip.

Nothing happened for two more weeks, so I approached the couple again and got told they don't know when it was to be removed; they thought it would have gone by now. I was fine with it and asked them to keep me updated. Another week, another "it should have gone by now". Then I saw the partner out in the garden, asked again and we ended up having a coversation where I asked them to phone the company and take it away as I know some will deliberately leave the skip to save on storage space. At no point was it mentioned that the thing was still needed and he seemed to be okay with ringing them up.

More time passed and the neighbours had by now fully taken ownership of their space back while the skip was still in my space. So, having had these conversations 3 times now and always having been told they thought it would have been collected by now I decided to take matters in my own hand and phone the company. I made it clear that I was a neighbour, NOT the couple themselves.

A day later the skip was gone.

Forward another 1.5 weeks and I am having a frothing neibour standing at my door threatening me with just about everything because they now need to hire a new skip as the builders hadn't finished. They want their money back from me.

AIBU to have stood my ground? Yes, I shouldn't have phoned without another confirmation with them, but a) they were taking the absolute piss and b) they kept telling me it should have been collected, not to mention c) the company took the skip back without confirming with them as well.

Charming of your neighbours Hmm
I feel for you. I hope you won't let them get away with this. Call the police, your landlord, and the skip company. Wishing you strength and patience Flowers

FortVictoria · 13/05/2021 04:20

Thinking of you today, and hoping it all works out.

UCOinanOCG · 13/05/2021 05:08

They are nasty CF. If it isnthe same skip hire place then maybe call them today and tell them they cannot put it in your parking space.

chaosrabbitland · 13/05/2021 05:15

i would have done the exact same thing as you , they are lying barstards its that simple , now they have got the arse because its backfired on them , they should have been more truthfull , i would be telling them to fuck off and call who they liked , i want to know how phoning your landlord or the agency is going to get them anywhere , as long as you havent broken your tenenacy agreement which you havent its nothing to do with either of these parties . but i agree with above it might be an idea to call ll yourself as your worried and explain how they lied and now are kicking off .

GnomeDePlume · 13/05/2021 05:21

YANBU

Neighbours didn't like their bluff being called re the feigned surprise at the original skip not having been removed.

If a skip arrives in your space then make a swift call to the skip company to say that it is in the wrong space. If it is not moved swiftly then a call to your LL to say that a skip has been dumped in your space and it needs moving.

sunshinesontv · 13/05/2021 05:21

I'd have let them use the space too, as a courtesy to friendly neighbours.

But after the first 2-3 times of finding the alternative parking space unavailable, I'd have told them to move it.

They don't really have a leg to stand on. What can they tell the landlord, that they put a skip on your parking space?

If a new skip arrives, call the landlord yourself, talk to builders, call new skip company.

chaosrabbitland · 13/05/2021 05:22

@Etherel

Funny you should ask, they actually shouted at me again today, having cornered me as I just came in from work, calling me all sorts and once again threatening to make me lose my rented home. I didn't budge, just reminded them I don't like being shouted at. Next time I may ask them to leave or I will start calling this harassment. They also told me the new skip would arrive in the parking space again tomorrow. We will see.
etheral you need to be ringing the police on their non emergency no and reporting this as harrasment , you really do . because they are threatning you and its not their fucking car space , i honestly even if it meant i had to pay for a taxi would make sure i left my car in the space all day . i hope you do ring the police . i will feel better if you do lol they are absolute scum . hugs xx
SpeakingFranglais · 13/05/2021 05:32

Are you joking? OMG I can see red mist!

Your neighbour absolutely knew they hadnt rung the skip hire company, they collect really quickly especially at times like now when loads of people want them. Then he had the absolute audacity to ask you to pay for it when he has inconvenienced you for weeks and let it sit rent free on your spot?

This needs adding to the CF of all time thread that’s out there.

SpeakingFranglais · 13/05/2021 05:46

Unfortunately I have heard of situations many times, both in RL and on MN where home owning residents seem to have an entitled and superior attitude over their renting neighbours.

Friends of ours were harassed for months by their new home owning NDN simply because they were renting. It didn’t matter that they had rented from the Council for decades and he had just moved in.

As a homeowner he thought he could throw rubbish in their garden, play loud music all night and have his teenage kids swear at our friends, whilst dropping in at every opportunity that he owned his house and they rented.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/05/2021 05:52

I also think you should be calling 101 to report harassment. And contact the skip hire company to make clear you do not give permission for it to be delivered into your space before it arrives. If you have chalk or parcel tape, you could write or tape a note to your space (and take a photo of it as proof in case the cf remove it) so hopefully the person will see it when delivering the skip.

MyOtherProfile · 13/05/2021 05:55

Op please call the skip company to make sure they know not to use your space. Can you get a friend to park in your space all day?

MaMaD1990 · 13/05/2021 06:07

If the skip turns up on your drive I'd be phoning your landlord to let him know what's happened. If I were the landlord I would be ending your tenancy on this basis, you've done nothing wrong. If the landlord agrees they can't put it there, they are illegally using his property for the skip so you/landlord can safely call the skip company and have them remove it again and in the meantime, block the neighbours car in so you can at least park...

MaMaD1990 · 13/05/2021 06:08
  • wouldn't be ending your tenancy!
rwalker · 13/05/2021 06:08

Ring your LL and if they kick off again remind them they said they were surprised it hadn't been picked up so you thought you were doing them a favour.

drpet49 · 13/05/2021 06:11

* I also think you should be calling 101 to report harassment. And contact the skip hire company to make clear you do not give permission for it to be delivered into your space before it arrives.*

Absolutely do this

Gubanc · 13/05/2021 06:14

OP, you were luck that skip was already paid for. We had a builder abandon us and ended ip having to pay for a skip to be picked up. No chance you could lose your rented home over this, it was silly of you to let them use the space in the first occasion. If a new skip turns up I'd ring the number on it and say they've left it at the wrong address. And report the threatening behaviour of neighbour to the police.

ImaginaryCat · 13/05/2021 06:16

If you work nights will your car be in the space to ensure the skip can't be put there? Otherwise do as a PP suggested and call the skip hire place, explain the situation and confirm that you do not want it in your space again. If it goes in your space you'll be ringing them straight away to collect it.

Couldhavebeenme2 · 13/05/2021 06:19

Slippy fuckers!!!

Couldhavebeenme2 · 13/05/2021 06:19

*skippy fuckers!

Fml...

ToffeePennie · 13/05/2021 06:24

Wow that’s so dreadful of them!!

picturesandpickles · 13/05/2021 06:28

Get your landlord involved if they put the skip there, this is the property owner's problem.

Maybe don't re-sign the tenancy.

But as a tenant you have no worries about neighbour disputes so I would report them the very next time they speak to you, and get your landlord involved asap. Do they own their house?

Fishcake394 · 13/05/2021 06:31

If another skip arrives (when you're out so not parked), I'd call the landlord. If your house comes with an allocated space then that is part of what you're paying rent for. If you can't use it, ask for a refund. Does the LL know you had a skip parked there for weeks on their property?

SympathyFatigue · 13/05/2021 06:33

Have you got a doorbell can?
Get someone to park on the space. I'd let my landlord know before they speak to the agency. Hopefully you're off tomorrow and can direct them to the correct specs for the skip.
Maybe their front lawn if they have one.

picturesandpickles · 13/05/2021 06:34

I would also tell the landlord now, in case it does arrive. Say you have not given permission.

Erikrie · 13/05/2021 06:46

I would tell them that if the new skip arrives there then you will be contacting the company immediately to move it, as they don't have permission to put it there. So if they want to lose loads of money than that's the way to go about it.
