Things I love about Brighton:
Easy to walk around, compact. Safe to walk around.
Lots of beautiful green space, parks.
5 miles of seafront. Always there, always open. For running, swimming, SUp. And, no it's not always rammed. Those photos always show just under Palace Pier - so much space either side, And off season it's all ours anyway.
Yellowwave - beach volley ball courts. And the Beachbox sauna on the beach.
The Open Air Theatre.
Palace Pier - really good fun to get a wristbands with the kids ( half price for locals) and go on everything.
A really great, diverse music and gig scene.
Tons of sports for kids - from footie teams, to cricket, to park basketball, Parkour.
Tons of stuff outdoors for adults - want to do yoga on the beach at 5am? there's a class. Want to be 'beasted' in a park after work there's a class. Want to learn how to tight rope walk? There's a grp in the park. Sea swimming beginner? Endless, endless grps. Want to SUP? Endless meet ups and grps.
Arty - always something going on whether it's crazy fire performers on the beach at dusk, the annual arts festival, Pride, Artists open houses trail, buskers, the Great Escape new musical weekend. Comedy weekend. Chilli Festival. It's never dull.
Fantastic independent shops, gifts, tut, books, records, food.
Brilliant library, lots of events, brill kids section.
Food - so many good food places.
Pubs - so many great pubs. Soooo many. Lots with a garden or outdoor space. Almost all kids and dog friendly.
The Downs within walking distance. The rest of the coast quick to get to.
Tolerant people. Genuinely tolerant, not some lip service to it. It's very live and let live. My kids have 2 mums and have literally NEVER has a negative experience or comment about it, which is astonishing if you think about it.Not many cities that would happen in.
On the election map we're a little red/green enclave surrounded by blue - think about that when you're considering Hastings or Chichester or Worthing as options... Toryvilles.
So many people are here for a better life/work balance - and you can tell, they're more chilled, work part-time, are always sneaking off to the beach, it's relaxed.
We have the only Green MP, cos, of course we do.
And finally, community. The sense of community is phenomenal. I thought I lived in the best street in Brighton, then discovered that friends in other parts think they do. We have street parties, Community halls and spaces, support groups, know our neighbours, - really know them - Playing Outs for the kids. Most people I know volunteer in some capacity, whether that's coaching a kids team, working for a food bank, volunteering for the NHS. And no they aren't retired, they have jobs, kids In the last year that community sense has really helped people through.
Things I don't like?
Not much. Don't even mind the hoards of summer tourists because they prop up our economy, and we locals just avoid that half mile or so around the Palace Pier on summer weekends.
Though please, please bag your rubbish up.
Homelessness - much less than I ever saw in London, but it is visible. Lots of homeless people come down here because the weather is much milder, I'd prob do the same.
There really is only one Brighton...
