To hate buying toilet paper

I find it embarrassing, especially if it’s the only thing I buy (not so bad as part of the weekly shop). I ran into a work colleague earlier coming out of the shop holding nothing but a big pack of toilet roll. I‘m always scared that the person on the till/anyone who sees me will be assuming that I’m going straight home to do a massive poo.
I know it’s silly because obviously everyone buys it but I normally make my husband buy it.
Anyone else have this worry?

I was always a bit bashful about buying TP when I was younger. Then I moved abroad where it only seemed to be sold in industrial quantities, well, 12-16 packs at a minimum.

Upon moving back home, I’d scour the isle for the largest pack I could find (of a suitably soft brand- I’m fussier with age Grin). No more shame. You will grow out of it.

Fkrkrodps · 25/04/2021 20:49

I was once in the queue with 2 packs of condoms and a bag of jelly babies on the conveyor belt. Looked up to see a work colleague in front of me. I think at that moment I would preferred to have been buying loo roll.

MangosteenSoda · 25/04/2021 20:50

*aisle, not isle. I am not that dedicated to mega-packs of TP.

Fedoos · 25/04/2021 20:55

I kind of get it, OP. Once I went to the shop when the only things I really needed were toilet rolls and bran flakes. I definitely added a few extra items in my basket that day.

crumpet · 25/04/2021 20:58

I couldn’t care less who sees me buying loo roll - but if it helps I order in bulk from Who Gives a Crap, delivered to my door, so haven’t bought from a supermarket for a good couple of years at least.

JeanneDoe · 25/04/2021 21:00

I buy it in bulk from Amazon but felt slightly similar when I used to buy it in the supermarket.

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 25/04/2021 21:00

I get it too op, especially when buying big packs. I really don't know why, I'm fine about sanpro (though now use reusable pads).
I did once buy condoms from the local supermarket (among other, very ordinary things like food etc.) and the older, male shop assistant put it through saying "looks like you're going to have a good weekend then". I was mortified!

Horacetheexplorer · 25/04/2021 21:05

This has never even crossed my mind. Even the Queen uses loo roll fhs.

God help us all should we ever need to buy incontinence products.

When did Brits get so prissy? I blame Mrs Hinch and the like.

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 25/04/2021 21:07

Also if you're looking for delivered/ subscription paper there's also Bumboo who sell bamboo toilet paper and have a nice eco-friendly approach. I prefer the individual wrappers to Who Gives a Crap.

Howyoudoingirl · 25/04/2021 21:15

I did feel a bit wierd about it last summer. Not because of the same reasons as you. I always felt like folks might think I was stockpiling it or panic buying.

ElephantsNest · 25/04/2021 21:19

Second those who say they get it delivered. So much easier. Who gives a crap looks expensive but each roll lasts ages compared to the Andrex I was buying via Amazon.

BlowDryRat · 25/04/2021 21:23

Grin OP that really is daft. There's no need to feel embarrassed about buying loo roll. No one gives it a second thought.

If you ran into a colleague while carrying a basket of condoms, lube and whipped cream then you might have grounds for embarrassment.

Craksappearing · 25/04/2021 21:37

@leopardSheet the only time I've felt that way about loo roll was during the first lockdown when I bought two packs rather than one and expected everyone in the store to be disapproving of me. But I do feel that way about sanitary products and always have done.

I think buying big packs is more awkward too. I always buy the biggest pack they have, after all we’re going to use it for the rest of our lives so I don’t get why you’d only buy 4 at a time (maybe to spread the cost or save space?). It’s totally illogical but I always think buying loads makes it look like you use a ridiculous amount.

My husband thinks I’m crazy. He once needed a nervous poo before a professional exam and the bathroom at the exam centre had no loo roll so he went and bought a 16 pack. He then took it into the exam room with him with the packet open and one missing. No shame at all.

My DP was buying loo roll once. A man stood by his taxi in the rank outside Sainsburys, eyed up DP - 12 rolls under arm - and shouted in front of everyone "Going home to wipe your arse?" Grin

Notfromthevalleys · 25/04/2021 21:59

Not just you OP, I’m the same. I don’t care if I don’t see anyone I know. But if I bump into somebody I know in the toilet roll aisle I am embarrassed. I would probably not pick any up, but go back to that aisle later. Silly isn’t it?

Doorhandleghost · 25/04/2021 22:01

I don’t find it embarrassing at all - we all have to wipe our bums don’t we - but I absolutely detest buying toilet roll because it reminds me I’m a grown up with responsibilities. It induces a ridiculous feeling of chagrin and despair....

Hence I buy in bulk - I like to limit my toilet roll purchasing to twice a year max. In the first lockdown I was laughing - but also able to give away quite a bit to desperate friends, who are no longer laughing at my toilet roll buying habits!

GirlCrush · 25/04/2021 22:04

@Sosigsandwich

What in earth?! This has got to be a joke?!
its made it onto reddit....the mumsnet sub section Grin
Happycat1212 · 25/04/2021 22:06

Nope, the only time I've felt embarrassed was when it was the first lock down and I bought a big pack and I worried people would think I was panic buying . although I did use to feel embarrassed buying San pro when I was younger so I suppose it's a bit like that

Doingtheboxerbeat · 25/04/2021 22:08

I go to the checkouts that are manned by underage males with my giant sized tampons and look them directly in the eye when they scan them Wink.

user77hjjy · 25/04/2021 22:26

@UCOinanOCG

Absolutely not. Everyone uses loo paper. Even the queen. You are weird.
I don't use it.

I never buy it.

@user77hjjy what do you use to blot away after a wee then?

Nubbled · 25/04/2021 22:57

I don’t understand your fear. Not taking a shit once or twice a day would be worse, surely?

greatauntfanny · 25/04/2021 23:02

if you ever bump into someone you know while carrying a 24 pack of toilet paper, simply look them in the eye and calmly say “I need TP for my bunghole.”
