@SunIsComing

Sheku was carrying a knife hence why the police came.

Sheku had discarded the knife prior to being approached by the police.

Regardless of that, are you stating then that you believe anyone carrying a knife or suspected of carrying a knife when they aren't deserves to be smothered to death by police officers?

Because if not what is your point?

A $20 fake note is hardly a crime worthy of 9 minutes of being suffocated.

I’m afraid America’s doddering idiot of a president may have handed grounds for appeal to the defence, by contacting the family prior to the verdict. Also, the jurors names have been made public - madness when you consider the repercussions on them had the verdict gone the other way. Whilst he deserved to be found guilty on some charges, he definitely has grounds for appeal due to the way the trial has been conducted.

Sendsystemsucks · 21/04/2021 07:50

@Livelovebehappy the president deliberately made his comments after the jury had been sequestered

@SunIsComing

Maybe not walking around with knives would help.

No it really wouldn’t. He wasn’t killed by a knife.

He was killed by an adult man kneeling on his neck. We can’t take away peoples’ knees, can we?

It was the right verdict, obviously. I think anyone who watched the video and/or heard the evidence presented in court already knew that, but it was a relief nonetheless.

I hope that this thread doesn't get zapped like the other one. I can't believe that @SunIsComing is still trying to victim blame even after the verdict. It's depressing.

Under the First Amendment and common law rights of access, jurors names can and are routinely released. It's madness imo but a problem with the legal system as a whole, not just this case.

I did laugh at the defence trying to say that George Floyd could have been inhaling carbon monoxide due to being next to an exhaust pipe and died because of that. Eh, who was holding him down next to that pipe again...it's akin to saying someone who drowned someone didn't kill them, the water did.

@LemonRoses
suniscoming is victim blaming Sheku Bayoh, the British black man smothered to death by a 6 police officers in Scotland after discarding a knife he'd picked up during an MDMA psychosis, and whilst unarmed

That was in response to @Veterinari about the Sheku Bayoh case. Sorry, it didn’t quote.

Not exactly surprising.. there would of been uproar if he was not found guilty

@SunIsComing so do you think police should have the legal right to treat a person they suspect of a crime, any crime, however they like - including murdering them?

Report
Mrgrinch · 21/04/2021 08:03

The right verdict I think.

There was recently a female police officer who shot a man dead because she accidentally grabbed her gun instead of her taser, and fired it. When will the police in the USA step up their training?

@IoIdoIdoOoh. Totally agree.
Correct verdict but nobody, not even a president, should be making comments until sentencing is passed.
@Livelovebehappy the president deliberately made his comments after the jury had been sequestered
The problem will come if an appeal declares a mistrial due to the comments by the Senator during the hearing. At that point the defense will argue that the comments made by Biden would make it impossible to have a fair trial as potential jurors would be aware of what the President had said.

Those are what he was charged with.

The right verdict imho.

My link shows, as said, we can't say that it wouldn't happen here.

In the US it isn't just deaths, there's stories of handcuffing and detaining very young children and vulnerable old people. There's no proper explaining at the time of arrests.

TustedFormula · 21/04/2021 08:10

I'm surprised TBH. I think it's right that the highest possible legal conviction is upheld, but I thought murder was an intentional killing. His actions were clearly intentional, but I don't think he intended the result to be death. But I know nothing about American law.

It's about time for America, I just hope it hasn't left things open for a successful appeal.

Report
LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 21/04/2021 08:11

This only happened because a member of the public videoed it, it's frightening to think Derek Chauvin, a man with 22 previous complaints against him, would otherwise still be out there. The US police needs a complete overhaul.
