I was wondering today whether GPs see other GPs if they are ill? Can anyone tell me? I'm assuming yes as they wouldn't be allowed to prescribe medications for themselves?

What other random things have you always wondered/wanted to know?

How restaurants get your food ready so fast, and how they get all the different meals for one table out at the same time (usually....).

letsleepingbabieslie · 20/04/2021 17:26

@giftswap2020 - yes, one of the first things they do is check and remove if there is one.

My mam got married in the 70s and i remember her not wearing jeans or anything.

As someone who was a teenager in the late 60s/early 70s this is astonishing to me. Everyone I knew (a wide range of people from different backgrounds) wore jeans of some variety some if not all the time, frequently paired with some tie-dyed cheesecloth monstrosity of a top.

Why no party in the UK is supporting re-joining the EU despite the evidence that leaving has caused huge problems & is really bad for the economy. And why do people continue to support Boris Johnson & this mates.

You know how we yawn when we are tired and want to sleep? Well, why do we also yawn when we wake up???
And why are yawns contagious?

I once eat somewhere where all the meals came out at different times :( Apparently it's not guaranteed at pub meal places even if you all go to the bar to order straight after each other. Do they really think we all want to eat separately? In restaurants they just keep the meals warm once they're ready until all the meals for that table are ready. From what I remember, the waiter has to tell the kitchen when the starters are nearly finished and the table will want their mains soon. It can be complicated.

If the food is very fast, I'd be suspicious. Weatherspoons etc. have it all pre-prepared and just put the frozen meals in the microwave.

Good question. Re. no. 1 it's a lack of courage I think. They're all spooked by the last GE result and nobody's brave enough to speak out even though it's most likely a majority are pro-EU now.

@sparepantsandtoothbrush

What happens to second class post? Is it separated from the first class post and then just sits there for an extra day waiting to be sorted and posted?
My comrade who works in the sorting office tells me first class gets sorted first, then second class.

So it all depends on the relative volumes of each.

MintyMabel If it helps, I can confirm that Spanish cockerels sound exactly the same as English ones. I found that out the same way my children found out that sometimes Daddy says very rude English words, even when we're in Spain, particularly when he's been awake since 5am every single f**king day of his holiday.

How does the snowplough driver get to work when it snows?
I remember when I first moved to the home county where I live now, this happening - tinpot local radio said that the gritting vehicles couldn't operate due to "too much snow"

"Actually, after your comment, I googled for whether dogs have "accents" and couldn't find much to suggest they do. I seem to recall there is some scepticism around the cow story too, so I don't think you've been proved wrong yet..."

Good to know.
Honestly, when I read the question I thought someone was joking. As if a certain breed of dog would think 'I'm in Spain now, I better speak like this'. Obviously, we humans will transcribe it differently according to our own language, but I thought the sound was the same.

What women did to prevent pregnancy pre-1960s. I'll watch a film set in WW2, say, and there's a passionate clinch, the couple are lounging around smoking afterwards in their undies...she nips to the bathroom afterwards and ....what? Is there some kind of special vinegar rinse or something? It honestly bothers me!
Yes, they douched. Which grass no contraceptive effect, as it only washed semen out of the vagina, not past the cervix. Ever heard the insult "douchebag"? (Very much an Americanism, I think. )

Ooh, and what happened in the Dyatlov pass incident. That still intrigues me
There's a Youtube video that gives a pretty good explanation for this.
Sparrowfeeder · 20/04/2021 17:42

Would my ancestors from 1800 have understood my accent?

This guy is fascinating on accents!

Gwenhwyfar · 20/04/2021 17:42

"What women did to prevent pregnancy pre-1960s. "

I think there have been rudimentary forms of protection/contraception for a long time and abortion attempts, a potion from a 'wise woman' for example.
Also basic things like pp have mentioned of doing 'other acts', avoiding fertile times and abstaining.
A friend's GP told her (when she lost weight and her periods stopped) that women long ago would go into the forest so they had less food and became unfertile due to low weight. That seems a bit more extreme than just counting the days though.
There are plenty of places/cultures/religion now that discourage contraception, but natural methods are allowed.

This is probably really stupid, but if you are in a coma or in hospital for a long stay but can’t walk to the loo, what happens when you do a poo? I know a catheter is used for pee. Do you just have a bed pad under you and shit the bed?!
If you’re in an induced coma, you just poo into a pad and the nurses just clean you up.

When I grew up in the 80s jeans were for young people. You didn't really see middle aged people wearing them and if you did you'd think they were one of those sad people who can't accept they're getting older, a bit like when you see a 70 year old rocker now dressed as a youngster. My DM wears them now, but my DF would never.

"I'm in Spain now, I better speak like this" - you are aware this is not even how it works for humans?

I think the hypothesis would be that dogs might imitate other dogs they hear, and it's conceivable that over time dog populations in different countries might drift apart in the the way they bark. But I'm not sure if anyone's found a way to measure that. I guess part of the problem is that there is a lot of variation between breeds anyway.

Yeah, I knew an Egyptian man years ago who did that with his Egyptian girfriend so she could still be an official virgin. I wasn't keen on going out with him when he asked me. Other forms of contraception from last century and still avilable are the Dutch Cap ( forget its official name) which is a rubber cap which is inserted with spermicide to cover the cervix. And condoms have been around for centuries made out of thicker rubber or even leather or animal stomach lining I think.
