I was wondering today whether GPs see other GPs if they are ill? Can anyone tell me? I'm assuming yes as they wouldn't be allowed to prescribe medications for themselves?

What other random things have you always wondered/wanted to know?

I've got two questions, how do bed bugs get in a new mattress and do people with different eyesight see different distances through binoculars?

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 20/04/2021 10:29

@MyOtherProfile

An ex of mine from years ago was at the same school his mum taught at. I can't remember now whether I ever asked him but I wonder now in that situation, would the child have to call them Miss X or could they say Mum?

I've taught colleagues children more than once. They had to call their parents Mr or Mrs in school.

My mother taught me at A level. it was way too weird to call her Mrs Orange and "mum" would have got the piss ripped out of me, so I just put my hand up really and didn't call her anything specifically. There was another girl in my year also taught by her mum and I never heard her call her mum anything either, just put her hand up if she wanted to ask a question.
Ninkanink · 20/04/2021 10:38

@Imtoooldforallthis bedbugs live in the bedframe, I think. So if you get a new mattress they’ll just come out as usual and bite.

Cattenberg · 20/04/2021 10:43

I haven’t had time to read the whole thread, so sorry if this has already been mentioned. I’m fascinated by Jury Service and want to know more about it e.g.

In England, why are 15 potential jurors called into a room, just for 12 of them to be “randomly selected” to serve on the jury? Why do this, unless the selection isn’t random at all, but a chance to weed out anyone who seems unsuitable?

Is the jury foreman told how to direct the deliberations (e.g. to begin by asking each juror for their initial verdict), or can they choose how to do it?

Has a jury foreman ever stood up in court and given a different verdict to the one agreed by the jury? If so, what happened?

Imtoooldforallthis · 20/04/2021 10:44

But what if you buy a complete new divan?

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 20/04/2021 10:44

Greek dogs say: "Gav, gav." French dogs say: "Ouaf, ouaf " and French cows say: "Meuh, meuh".
Bow-wow.

Bedbugs can be found in suitcases (hence why they're such a problem in hotels), clothes, bedframes and so on.

If you're ever in a hotel, it's a good idea to check in the creases and seams for bedbugs - they're entirely visible. I had them once - they're unpleasant buggers, though at first I convinced myself I'd been muched on by mosquitoes!

Get a pest controller in first.

I thought that bed bugs were in everybody's beds, is that not correct?

Ninkanink · 20/04/2021 10:49

No that’s not the case...

Thank goodness!

You're probably thinking of dust mites.

Bed bugs are deffo not "normal".

Also, who thought it would be a good idea to eat something that appeared to come out of a chicken's bum?

Or looked under a cow and thought "mmm, what comes out of there is worth drinking"

I often think this - also all the cavepeople who ate poisonous berries etc so we know which are dangerous and don't!
AzureHawker1 · 20/04/2021 11:00

Re guide dog poo. Dogs don’t actually have to crap when they are out for a walk any more than we do, my dog mostly goes in my back garden which is what I’ve always encouraged her to do as I run a lot with her and hate carrying bags of dog shit for miles when I’m running. I always carry bags and do occasionally need to use them but it’s pretty rare. I think given how well trained guide dogs are they could easily be trained not to poo when they are working although it would depend how much of the day they are out for.

Imtoooldforallthis · 20/04/2021 11:00

Oh must be dust mites I'm thinking of then, are they just in the air then?

tenlittlecygnets · 20/04/2021 11:01

I wonder now in that situation, would the child have to call them Miss X or could they say Mum? I'd find it really weird having my Mum as my teacher I think.

Schools discourage people teaching their own dc - it's avoided where possible. Some of my friends who are teachers have had their dc in their schools, and they always call them 'Mrs X' at school, not Mum!

When to use affect, and when to use effect.

I just can't get my head around it and it annoys me.

This seems to be the case for most of the population -hence why people use impact instead.

Effect is the noun. But it can also be used as a verb when you effect (ie cause) change.

Generally you use affect as a verb - ie you affect the cooking by increasing the temperature but effect the change in temperature by moving the dial on the hob.

Probably clear as mud I know. I am not an English teacher Grin

Your tummy button is on the outside of your body where you were once attached to the umbilical cord. What's on the inside of your body?

If you have a hysterectomy, what happens at the top of your vagina? Is it just a dead end? And if they leave the ovaries there, what are they attached to? Do they just hover?

Re. your second question. I had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago and had to ask the consultant this. Yep it’s just a dead end. I had my cervix removed as well and the whole thing does shorten the vagina a bit. When DH and I resumed ‘marital relations’ after I recovered it felt very different, bit uncomfortable for both of us. I had my ovaries removed as well so I’m not sure what happens if they’re left.

Binoculars: you have to manually adjust binocs to suit your eyesight. How far you can see using binocs depends on your eyesight but mainly on what magnification the binocs have - we have birdwatching ones that have 10 x 50 magification, which help us see quite far away. Others are for focusing on closer things.

So I don't think you'd see different distances, but if you had better eyesight then you'd just see more detail using binocs than someone with poorer eyes.

Is there a height of tower above which you don’t get bugs / creature infestations - ants, cockroaches, mice etc?

Like you get ants attacking your bin on floor 12, but not above floor 42.

No, they can get everywhere. Cockroaches can fly as well. (I live in a country where cockroaches are common)

How the Universe is constantly expanding.

How?? Where to? Surely there must be a limit! Confused

You haven't quite grasped the concept of "infinite", have you? Grin

*People in other countries associate different sounds with animals. For example, UK toddlers may call a dog a "Woof!" however Japanese toddlers say "Wan Wan". I find it fascinating!

But....is the actual noise the dog makes the same in those different countries?

The noises are the same but people describe them differently. In Spain dogs say guau (wow) and birds say pio pio.

I've taught colleagues children more than once. They had to call their parents Mr or Mrs in school.

Working in military schools inevitably the teachers' children were all at the school and as we also socialised with each other they generally called us by our first names. When the first one of our group was coming up to starting school it was explained to her that she would have to call everyone Mr/Mrs/Miss, as appropriate, in school, Daddy too. She was OK with this but she referred to her Daddy as Mr *, even when he was bathing her! My children referred to the teachers' 3.30 names! At the end of an Assembly the Head said 'Mr JudgeJ's children stand and go back to your classroom', our 5 year old stood up too, as well as his 10 year olds. When walking down to lunch the youngest daughter's class walked past my classroom and according to her teacher she chattered all the way but stopped talking and dropped her head as she walked by then carried on! Once we were walking through the Hall to the Staffroom for Break and two little girls were sitting on the naughty mat, unhappy to see their 4 parents walking by trying hard not to collapse in laughter! It was important not to take things home though, if we weren't told officially about an incident we ignored what we knew.

This job keeps coming up whenever I view a thread and I need to know if they've made a mistake. That salary can't be right!

That's very similar to the job that I used to do, even when I went down to a 3-day week I was still far above that salary and I stopped working over a decade ago. Having said that, I think that it's a genuine salary because there are some cheeky fucker employers out there who think that they can use a difficult job market to under pay. I also think they have next to no hope of finding someone with those skills willing to work for that money even in a difficult job market, and if they do get someone that person will be job hunting again within six months.
