I was wondering today whether GPs see other GPs if they are ill? Can anyone tell me? I'm assuming yes as they wouldn't be allowed to prescribe medications for themselves?

What other random things have you always wondered/wanted to know?
@CuntyMcBollocks no their wings are too light and thin. Many can walk on water though because they're so light and their weight is distributed across many hairy legs they don't apply enough force to break the surface water tension.
Thank you Grin

@Galaxyinmypocket that’s me. I’m an extrovert with social anxiety because of the same worries - dominating and being brash. I am open about it to people now though and ask them to tell me because I’d hate to offend. Especially with my more introverted friends.

@Mrgrinch

How much of what we believe to be history, is completely wrong or made up?
Someone said that History is the story told by the victors, certainly a lot of what we believe is influenced by writings hundreds of years later, often for nefarious purposes. There are no contemporary stories of Richard III being hunchback or killing the babes in the Tower, that came from Shakespeare's play and as he was writing under the Tudors who had taken the crown from RIchard III with a very poor claim, he was pleasing his audience. The skeleton found in Leicester showed a slight deformity around the shoulder but nothing that would have looked hunchbacked. I did 'A' level Physics in the mid 60s and some of that has been disproven, what a waste of time that was!

@Cattenberg

I haven’t had time to read the whole thread, so sorry if this has already been mentioned. I’m fascinated by Jury Service and want to know more about it e.g.

In England, why are 15 potential jurors called into a room, just for 12 of them to be “randomly selected” to serve on the jury? Why do this, unless the selection isn’t random at all, but a chance to weed out anyone who seems unsuitable?

Is the jury foreman told how to direct the deliberations (e.g. to begin by asking each juror for their initial verdict), or can they choose how to do it?

Has a jury foreman ever stood up in court and given a different verdict to the one agreed by the jury? If so, what happened?

I have done 2 stints of Jury Service. I think they take 15 people initially, in case the defendant or solicitors know or recognise any of them, and can object to their being on the Jury.

The Foreman is chosen by the other jurors and is often a person who takes the initiative to get the deliberation going, so usually one with a strong personality and 'leadership qualities'. There is no training on how to do it so they take the lead. In my experience, the first thing to do is take an initial vote to see if everybody agrees, and debate comes from that!

It is a fascinating experience if you ever get the chance to do it!

@Frazzledd

(Btw, did she really get the door wrong in Labyrinth!!?? @MindGrapes....its my mission to now get to the bottom of this, 30 years of trying!)

No she didn't, she answered correctly given the logic earlier in the thread. The reason she fell through the trap door was for insulting Jareth/The Labyrinth by calling it a "piece of cake" (which is why she fell down to the oubliette and not to "certain death" as she was told would happen if she got the question wrong.)

She also calls the Labyrinth a "piece of cake" a bit later in the film, so Jareth punishes her by reducing the time she has to solve the Labyrinth and sending the Cleaners after her and Hoggle.

Hoggle also says it near the end of the film where everything looks calm and safe and immediately they are surrounded by the goblin army as retaliation.

Who decided the name of colours and numbers and why did my mother chose a man over me and leave me on a door step ?

My mum's body was buried 13 years ago. Is it a skeleton yet?

Thebirdstbeseathebirds · 20/04/2021 12:10

Yes, because they can't prescribe themselves drugs ( though often do get hold of them or have a friend do the script ). For MH issues there is a specific counselling service GPs can use so they don't have to go to docs they might know.

MagicSummer · 20/04/2021 12:10

@PurleaseSqeeze - My father was a GP; I do think most of them self-diagnose and they have a wealth of 'sample drugs' which medical reps leave with them which they can 'try'! If it is something more serious, they have direct access to consultants and in the medical fraternity, doctors and their families are nearly always given quick access to appointments and treatment.

It depends on lots of different factors - climate, soil type, embalming, type of coffin (the royals are buried in lead lined coffins; one of my relatives says she wants to be buried in a cardboard coffin) and so on.

The answer is maybe - but possibly not

Was your mum embalmed?

Yes I can assure you they do.
RedMarauder · 20/04/2021 12:15

@SunshineCake where you born before the early 1970s?

Thebirdstbeseathebirds · 20/04/2021 12:15

I want to know if serving police officers in the Met force GENUINELY believe that the police service isn't racist. I know some smart London cops who swear blind there's no racism despite the overwhelming evidence against this re stop and search in particular and I wonder if they're delusional or just won't admit that there is a problem to an "outsider".

That's heartbreaking. I'm so sorry.
AndromedaGal · 20/04/2021 12:21

What is the purpose of life? I mean, that's the biggie isn't it? We don't have much time here, and we leave as we arrived - with nothing but our souls. So what is all that about?

Why did God (if there is a God) put a snake in the garden to tempt Adam & Eve after creating the Garden of Paradise? For what specific reason did he create the "chaos" element which is what the snake embodies?

Answer me those two

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 20/04/2021 12:21

I don't know if she was embalmed. I don't remember it coming up in conversation with the funeral director.

Regular oak coffin. No lead!

Youcunnyfunt · 20/04/2021 12:22

Yes the Jury thing is partly in case anyone recognises each other - Jury / defence / prosecution. But also partly due to some people having excuses not to complete the jury service. You have to stand in front of the judge with your excuse and then he tells you if it's accepted or not. Usually more than 3 people have an excuse...

I was called up once and there were nearly 50 of us crammed into the jury room. It was for a long case, expected to be 10+ weeks, so they called lots of people as expected most people wouldn't be able to serve (my excuse was accepted!).

I've been called 3 times !

SunshineCake · 20/04/2021 12:23

@1forAll74

I have had quite a few letters over the years, that had 2nd class stamps on them, but came on the next day from posting, as a 1st class would.
Me too maybe in those days there were less first class letters. I remember in 1995 I had two postal deliveries a day.
Giggorata · 20/04/2021 12:24

I'd like to know why we have a limit to the speed of light in a probably infinite universe. Why is it the fastest speed? Why is there a limit at all?
(I know that quantum physics contradict this)

I'd like to know similarly for Absolute Zero. Why is it the lowest temperature possible?
Is there a limit the other way, the highest possible temperature?

I'd also like to know if our closest relatives, the apes, have unconscious minds. Along with many other mammals, they dream, for example. Can they be hypnotised?

I have so many questions...

How do they make Maltesers perfectly round?
But they don't. You get the odd one that looks round but most of them are irregular. I think they bank on the fact that we are eating the malty orbs of chocolatey goodness too fast to inspect them properly.

Good news. It's still too low but far better than 14k! Despite not having any intention of applying, it was worrying me. I feel overinvested Grin

katiedidnt · 20/04/2021 12:43

Given people speaking British English can generally understand those speaking US English and vice versa, can people signing BSL and ASL get the gist as well? Or is there no commonality?

If my friend speaks Spanish, I vaguely understand her. If I speak Italian, she vaguely understands me.

Is there the same level of an ability to get by with BSL and ASL or is more akin to comparing, say, English and Russian?
