I switched BBC 1 on early and am waiting for Casualty. The programme on at the moment is hosted AGAIN by Paddy McGuinness. He is rarely off the screen and I cannot understand it! He has a simply dreadful dialect and will keep sounding a hard G in singing. Apart from that he yells at the top of his (Very unattractive) voice. How on earth does this man keep a job on television?

OP posts:

I think the singing thing has been pretty well explained.

RadioSilienced · 17/04/2021 22:15

Can’t bear ant but quite like dec

tttigress · 17/04/2021 22:15

I think Top Gear would be enhanced if Chris Harris was paired with some better presenters, not made to taking part in fake shouty banter with Paddy and Flintoff.

eatsleepread · 17/04/2021 22:17

He looks like he'd be a real sleazeball. Sorry, that's the vibe I get. And he looks like he'd fart in bed and trap you under the duvet Blush Sorry, but I think he'd be really uncouth.

Frazzled2207 · 17/04/2021 22:17

I’m a bit meh about PM but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a regional accent.

I get that vibe too, if you complained about his annoying behaviour, he would say don't be so stuck up, I'm only "having s laugh".
TableFlowerss · 17/04/2021 22:19

@Giantrooster

Foreigner here, I can't understand why you would choose two hosts with thick thick accents/dialects for a worldwide broadcasted programme. Doesn't make it easier to understand.

I think English is quite lovely when spoken well, and I know there should be room for various dialects, but the new top gear really is an abomination to listen to.

Erm not everyone speaks PR you do realise?........ the average person certainly doesn’t!!!! Hmm
userlotsanumbers · 17/04/2021 22:19

dialect? Do you mean accent? I bet Paddy knows the difference.

PrelovedWithValue · 17/04/2021 22:19

If anyone is still confused with the singing thing, the g is being pronounced like it is in single, rather than how it would be in flinging.

Which is a useless description if you have a Bolton accent 😁

TableFlowerss · 17/04/2021 22:20

In Britain

Derrymum123 · 17/04/2021 22:20

He comes across as a lovely person. I quite like his accent. It is genuine and very easy to listen to.

eatsleepread · 17/04/2021 22:21

@tttigress

Totally!

Kindlethefourth · 17/04/2021 22:21

Saw him live at a local theatre - he really wasn’t funny. Also Find it odd that his wife regularly posts lingerie photos and then talks about challenges with their children with asd

Why is it odd? Why can't she show her body and talk about challenges with her ASD children?

tttigress · 17/04/2021 22:22

I'm currently living in s foreign country and try to learn the language. I do totally take the point that it would be better for non native speakers to be able to heat standardised pronunciation on national TV.

Figgygal · 17/04/2021 22:23

Can’t stand him either
He’s barely tolerable on top gear but that’s about it

TableFlowerss · 17/04/2021 22:24

People might not care for him personally, but to take the piss out of his accent is just crass.

If he had a foreign sounding accent, people wouldn’t be so freely saying they can’t understand his accent!

Again, most people in Britain don’t speak with a RP accent!!!!

Juliettbravo · 17/04/2021 22:25

@x2boys agree He's got quite a broad accent. And I live there too.

Cowssaymoo · 17/04/2021 22:25

God, I don’t get a sleazy vibe at all 🤷🏻‍♀️He seems to adore his wife and has almost a shy/gentleman vibe around women.

He’d probably do the farting thing tho 🙄

I consider myself fairly indifferent but that is literally just making shit up.
PomLikeTheBattle · 17/04/2021 22:26

Agree also same for Phil and Holly.

Oh please. There is plenty of standardised pronunciation on British TV. I'm sure people can cope with the odd regional accent. And what if the non-native speaker is living in Bolton rather than Tunbridge Wells.
sweeneytoddsrazor · 17/04/2021 22:27

He's ok the programme is utter garbage. I am very confused by the whole singer thing so going to have to watch some of it again to listen to it.

Cissyandflora · 17/04/2021 22:28

@Iamthewombat

In our house he has the same impact on tv watching as Ant & Dec, GinoD’acampo, Philip Schofield, Amanda Holden and Michael McIntyre.

OFF!

I wonder why anyone likes watching these people. I am clearly missing something.

Exactly the same here! That lot don’t get a chance at all.

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ For the umpteenth time, most people in Britain don’t speak RP!! That’s just for the films....!

People from other countries speak the way they do. Do you seriously think tgey should change their accent to help make it easier for foreigners to understand..... give over!

That is hilarious though.
