Paddy McGuinness

I switched BBC 1 on early and am waiting for Casualty. The programme on at the moment is hosted AGAIN by Paddy McGuinness. He is rarely off the screen and I cannot understand it! He has a simply dreadful dialect and will keep sounding a hard G in singing. Apart from that he yells at the top of his (Very unattractive) voice. How on earth does this man keep a job on television?

It's usually pronounced sing-ing. But some people pronounce it sing-ging. Both of these things my phone wants to change to ding-dong.

Neither is wrong, it's just a regional variation.

maddy68 · 17/04/2021 21:48

I personally know him he's a genuinely lovely guy. The great thing about TV is Its an option, you can switch off entirely, change channels or play a board game etc. Zero comprehension how this can impact your life

LagunaBubbles · 17/04/2021 21:48

have no idea who he is. Does anyone still watch live TV? Happily watching Heathers tonight in our house

Yes people still watch live TV obviously.Hmm

Redcrayons · 17/04/2021 21:49

Northerner here. I’ve just watched the trailer to hear how he says singing and it sounds normal to me. show looks terrible tho

Nowt wrong with regional accents on telly.

aliloandabanana · 17/04/2021 21:50

If he's running two words into each other (singingin) then that's just poor enunciation isn't it? Doesn't mean singing is being pronounced wrongly. Don't people usually pronounce the g at the end of these words?

Ohpulltheotherone · 17/04/2021 21:51

See i really liked him in Phoenix nights and the other stuff he did with Peter Kay. He’s naturally very funny and quick witted. But he’s sold out hasnt he.

All the tv presenting has made him cringey as fuck. He should have stuck with a bit of dark comedy, a bit of prime time occasionally. Would have kept a bit of credibility

Banville · 17/04/2021 21:51

The middle G.

Heatherjayne1972 · 17/04/2021 21:51

He was on R2 this morning!

He is everywhere ....

Banville · 17/04/2021 21:52

I suppose at least he's not Jonathan thingy who was on TV for a while by dint of being Robbie Williams' bff.

Tisforptarmigan · 17/04/2021 21:52

I can't understand it either. Can't watch any programme with him in it

Mumberjack · 17/04/2021 21:53

He was a bit much on Take Me Out, but I do think he’s a good fit on Top Gear.

I’ve also just listened to him on the Lockdown Parenting podcast and he was very thoughtful and articulate on both the challenges of his kids growing up into relative wealth compared to his background, and how they manage the kids’ additional support needs.

Cowssaymoo · 17/04/2021 21:54

I honestly can’t see how people could hate him, he seems so lovely 🙈

I’m sure most of us would be on everything if we were offered it (needed the work/money)

I don’t like the blonde hair though, actually have a crush on the dark haired Paddy, he’s a Northern fitty 🤣 never heard a bad word about him.

Cocolapew · 17/04/2021 22:02

I love the new Top Gear and like Paddy on it, though he is a bit like an excitable toddler sometimes.

So you don’t think someone should be allowed to do their job because of their accent? Hmm

Laquila · 17/04/2021 22:07

@balloonsandboobies I have a weird sense of deja vu here (possibly been discussed on an accents thread before?) but how could singer and finger NOT rhyme? I've said them about a hundred times now and feel like I'm missing something!

Iamthewombat · 17/04/2021 22:07

In our house he has the same impact on tv watching as Ant & Dec, GinoD’acampo, Philip Schofield, Amanda Holden and Michael McIntyre.

OFF!

I wonder why anyone likes watching these people. I am clearly missing something.

I think most people would pronounce singer as sing-er, and finger as fing-ger. I mean the 'er' bit rhymes, but not the whole word.

I was just about to recommend this episode of Lockdown Parenting Hell to all the doubters. For exactly the reasons you state.

Cant blame celebs for making hay while the sun shines.

tttigress · 17/04/2021 22:11

Don't watch top gear often, but the few yes I have seen it, it just feels like Paddy and Flintoff shouting at each other, doesn't make much sense!

Cocolapew · 17/04/2021 22:11

I think it's called having different tastes. Its not really that hard to work out.

ThorFull · 17/04/2021 22:13

Still none the wiser on the singing thing.

I don’t watch Saturday night tv. So can’t comment on his presenting abilities.

He’ll always be the Baldy Bouncer from Phoenix Nights to me, anyway. He and Peter Kay will always have a special place in my heart.

x2boys · 17/04/2021 22:13

Him and Peter Kay attended the same high school my son currently attends MSJ ,we also had my oldest boys christening at the phoenix club so I'm clearly biased

Are you insane?

He's such a lovely guy. I find him very sexy and love his voice. What do you mean 'he has a simply dreadful dialect' ?!!!!!!! What, Northern?!! OMG this country is not just the South, you know! In fact, York was the capital of England!

Dialect?! ...... sorry I think this is the post that has made me the crossest on MN!! ... how could you honestly be so superior and rude and say such things? I've never heard anything like it.
