To think Cuthbert looks like a Colin who lived a hard life?

Be realistic, Cuthbert looks a version of Colin who has had a hard life and is barely clinging on to his previous good looks.

If I was M&S I’d be pissed off too, they could have at least made his eyes straight. Grin

What I want to know is what will happen if anyone produces a brother for Percy the Pig... Peter perhaps.. or a sister.. Petronella?? It would make the Cuthbet and Colin wars look like a nice peaceful walk in the countryside.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/04/2021 09:23

Cuthbert's eyes are the give away. He looks like he’s had a night on the tiles.

I’m guessing Cuthbert tastes cheap and sad too.

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2021 09:32

Aldi should have made cakes in the shape of dogs. Those long sponge Swiss rolls would make the perfect body of a dashshund or a corgi and they could have A names Alan and Alana for example.
With so many more people owning dogs as pets these days, I'm sure it would make a change from the old caterpillar tropes and with four legs to make lots of nice white chocolate each side. Send a tiny bit of the profits to a dogs charity and they might have cleaned up!

Aldi have started making vegan Percy Pigs. Leo the Lions. And...shhh...I prefer them!

I've never had a caterpillar cake from anywhere but I am team Cuthbert. I've always gone for the left of field Grin. Bet Colin votes Tory.

Slipperfairy · 17/04/2021 09:52

I never shop at m&s. I just buy caterpillar cakes wherever I find them. Wasn't aware there was a trademark on caterpillar cakes. I find m&s' response bizarre.

PinkiOcelot · 17/04/2021 09:54

I’ve bought a caterpillar cake from Tesco before. Are they suing them as well.

All a bit pathetic I think.

DoctorTwo · 17/04/2021 10:17

Aldi are German; they'll win on penalties, it's some sort of cosmic law.

SpiceRat · 17/04/2021 10:26

Nah, Colin is a smug prick. The type who’s always had money and he’s lived a life of privilege. Colin has a plastic SAHM even tho the kids are teenagers, he’s does coke on weekend when he’s “out with the lads” and shouts at his kids as he doesn’t know how to parent them without throwing money at them. Hates his wife as he’s resentful of her mooching but likes the fact he has a pretty women to show off. It’s all presentation and no substance with Colin and his family. All fur coat and no caterpillar knickers.

Cuthbert had a hard start to life, he was never loved like Colin as a baby caterpillar. He lived his life in Colins shadow. He gets attention by telling crass jokes and never taking anything seriously. He lives for laughs but because of the lack of love he received as a child he’s troubled inside. He will never be Colin but deep down he just wants a family and a life like Colin. It’s so sad.

😂 They probably will! Why other companies haven't pulled them up on their products I'm not sure as the packaging is very similar to the bigger brands on a lot of the stuff Aldi sell. I guess this case will be about the taste and how it looks outside the packaging.
littledrummergirl · 17/04/2021 11:20

Cuthbert was wink wink, don't tell anyone as its all hush hush, "special forces". Bodyguard to the Queen dontcha no.

Bagelsandbrie · 17/04/2021 11:25

I love all the stuff about this on Twitter etc.

I think M and S may have signed their own death warrant with this. Total lack of sense of humour and failing to see the bigger picture (ie there’s is not the only similar cake)! Everyone is just going to see M and S as ridiculously stuck up and old fashioned now. (Well, more than they did already!)

Bagelsandbrie · 17/04/2021 11:25

I bloody hope not, I don’t want to be forced to eat Aldi’s rank, stale food when it’s the only retailer left after they’ve ripped off everyone else’s branding and undercut them.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/04/2021 11:42

ASDA's looks like Dougal from the Magic Roundabout.

Why aren't there girl caterpillar cakes?

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2021 11:49

I know people that won't step foot in Aldi or Lidl ( they mostly blame their allergies , but it's just because they see Waitrose and M and S as 'superior' , better quality food)
I doubt that this debacle will sway people either way, you either prefer one shop or you don't. It's not even money related sometimes as people I know that can afford the more pricier stores tend to shop at Aldi and vise versa. It is more complex than it appears on the surface , some just prefer value for money rather than a brand. (I go in and have tried all of them!)

custardbear · 17/04/2021 11:50

On radio 2 yesterday someone phoned as their son and uni friends had done a taste test if 11 different 'species' of these cakes ... Colin came 1st and cuthbert 10th

Jeremy Vine even had a caterpillar expert on saying how anatomically correct (or incorrect!) they were ... put me off a bit when she mentioned caterpillars are essentially a mouth,
stomach and bottom

M&S does a Connie the caterpillar. She’s pink and has more sprinkles.
Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 17/04/2021 12:04

I thought Morrison’s plaintive tweet deserved a response from Aldi. They discovered Aldi, Asda, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s had their very own group chat without them. Their broken hearted emoji just says it all. #whataboutMorris

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 17/04/2021 12:16

@OhWhyNot

Maybe Cuthbert should start to self identify as Colin

That would surely be allowed

Or Carol?!
LilacSorbet · 17/04/2021 12:17

Even Americans have noticed the lawsuit - Emily D Baker's covered it on her YouTube channel :

The Twitter is so funny.

Poor Morrison’s.... they’re just not consistent though, great in some parts of the country and utter pants in others... they’ve probably got three different versions of caterpillar cake all over the country.

I’m very entertained by all of this though Grin

I think M&S are being ridiculous though, caterpillar cakes were a staple at birthday parties in the 80’s along with a doll stuck in a cake decorated to look like a dress. They didn’t discover cold fusion.

BackforGood · 17/04/2021 12:22

@Arbadacarba

Co-op effort is especially lame.
Thank you @Arbadacarba

Star for excellent research and displaying your evidence

  • put me off a bit when she mentioned caterpillars are essentially a mouth, stomach and bottom*

Hence the (vile) film The Human Caterpillar, probably.

I'm safe from this furore. I hate chocolate cake.

EsmaCannonball · 17/04/2021 12:24

Cuthbert is the Baby Jane Hudson to Colin's goody-goody Blanche. They should bypass the copyright issues by adding a generous tot of rum to his cake-mix and sticking a liquorice fag in his mouth.

BackforGood · 17/04/2021 12:25

@Weirdwonders
I can't comment specifically on Colin or Cuthbert, but, overwhelmingly Aldi produce isn't substandard.
I mean, I realise you won't take my word for that, but you could look on the Consumer Researcher 'Which' 's site for further evidence.
