To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

Landmark Trust properties don't have TV. They promote it as a positive. You could see how they word it on the website

@2bazookas

Make a USP of having no TV; advertise your place as a getaway break to nature, in an AOB, away from all the stresses of modern life. Peace and quiet. Aim at the guests who come for the outdoors ; they will be out all day walking or bird watching or playing golf.. Out doorsy people will require a means to dry wet clothes and I'd suggest washable floors (because they'll come in with wet /muddy boots). Supply maps, guidebooks for local wildlife and walking trails, books., recommedn the best pubs with food within walking distance.

If you're letting one room I suggest twin beds (that can be pushed together for couples.). That way you appeal to both the couples market, and pairs of friends.

I think @2bazookas is right - lots of the posters are coming on here to say why they wouldn't book your place without a TV, but if you can make it a selling point, and say promise a well-stocked range of paperbacks / board games / jigsaws (?), then there is a market out there. And if you don't get any bookings on that basis, you'll have your answer....
peak2021 · 16/04/2021 16:08

I'd be more concerned about wifi. Lack of good internet connectivity in some parts of the country and the lax response of every government in recent years despite promises is an example of how their thinking beyond the metropolitan London bubble is limited.

FTEngineerM · 16/04/2021 16:08

@Kaptain that’s true but I’m hoping this pandemic and lockdowns won’t last forever and it’ll be back to work/school and the likes.

😬

Thewinterofdiscontent · 16/04/2021 16:08

I’ve stayed in places with no TV happily - Yurts for example. However they were clearly a non TV type holiday with plenty to do - nice outside space for eating and drinking, near the sea, plenty of shops and things not too far away. You’d not stay more than a night or two really.

Unless it’s tiny like a tent it would pay to have people staying a week or so and that includes Christmas. I would expect a TV in the middle of winter or for a week or so.

OP is intending to list on Airbnb. She will thus be competing with all the other properties in her area that do have TV. Not Landmark Trusts.

Maybe you need to spend more time watching The Hotel Inspector. You'd learn a lot.

True, but I still think it'll take a year or so until we feel we're not seeing enough of each other, after this last year Grin

SausageDogSandwich · 16/04/2021 16:09

Air BnB guests will not be gardening, doing crafty stuff and pottering about though, Op.

We like to watch breakfast tv and go out all day. Sometimes we eat out and sometimes we stay in and eat/drink wine. Sometimes we listen to music and sometimes we watch tv.

DH and I get on like a house on fire but even we don't talk to each other 24/7 when we're away.

Hobbesmanc · 16/04/2021 16:10

I was about to post that I'd never watch TV on hols. But actually when DP is in the bathroom (can be ages on the loo but thats a whole other story) i do flick through the telly channels

Get the TV!

Although when at home I don't watch ours much, preferring the laptop, I do not take my laptop on my AirB&B holidays with my mum.

All the apartments we have stayed in have had massive, fantastic TV's with all sorts of fabulous channels and it is a real treat to watch a film or series on Netflix, for example, that mum wouldn't have access to at home (we live in different countries).

Our last holiday in August (when lock down was relaxed a bit, and the only time I saw her at all last year, and not since Sad) we went on a glass blowing workshop and later binge watched Blown Away (both series) on Netflix.

Provide a telly plus as many channels as you can. It will be appreciated.

I don't go on holiday to watch tv so I wouldn't want a tv. I only book accommodation with stunning views out of the window and watch the view instead of tv. 
Some people manage to look at both!
@sunflowersandbuttercups good for them, I don't want to. Give me otters, seals etc any day. Tv can't compete.

thatsgotit · 16/04/2021 16:12

I wouldn't book somewhere if it didn't have a TV. I like to watch it in the evenings on holiday, and I don't like watching on my iPad.

1forAll74 · 16/04/2021 16:12

I would go to a place without a TV, especially the place and area that you have described. A little radio would be ok for me though.mainly for some news items.

Do you watch a lot of them at night?
LagunaBubbles · 16/04/2021 16:14

What's the point of going away to spend your evenings watching the same rubbish as at home?

Well none but since I don't watch rubbish at home as I enjoy the programmes I watch Im going to be the same on holiday.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/04/2021 16:14

Tv doesn't have to compete, but seals and otters actually do go to sleep and dark sets so view is... Dark...

Then we turn tv on. 😁

SarsonsWine · 16/04/2021 16:14

@GravityFalls given that I go on holiday to places like Scotland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland in June/July that's never been an issue for meGrin

The OP could open her B&B in a zoo I suppose.

That's super, but I don't believe OP is in any of those places.

safariboot · 16/04/2021 16:15

YABU. I think it's a pretty basic thing. Even with good internet not everyone owns and can use a bunch of gadgets. With bad internet it's even more important.

You can get TVs that are 22 inches. Unless you're trying to list the cupboard under the stairs on AirBnB it'll fit. This is ours in our living room at home, nice picture quality too.

I wouldn't book without a TV or internet

Ohpulltheotherone · 16/04/2021 16:17

Well think about it - if it’s in an area of beauty where a lot of ppl go for relaxation and walking then they’re going to want something to do in the evening!
You can’t go hiking in the pitch black and whilst one night of sitting in the quiet and reading a book is nice, most people enjoy relaxing with a film or some Netflix!

When we’ve been away for a night or two alone we’ve always watched really random dvds or films bc there’s usually sod all to do in the evening in the middle of nowhere! Grin

IrmaFayLear · 16/04/2021 16:17

@SausageDogSandwich makes a really good point. You have a lot of down time on holiday. You can’t “potter” because it’s not your house - there is no gardening, sorting, diy etc etc to be done.

We have watched and enjoyed some really random things on holiday - programmes you’d never watch at home. In fact at home I never turn on the tv until the evening, but when away you might well watch a couple of Frasiers at 8am and a Pointless in the afternoon.

And, as others have observed, you can get some really crap weather in this country that has even the hardiest walkers hunkered down in front of the telly. And who does rambling in the dark?!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 16/04/2021 16:18

Great, but there's no need to have such a superior attitude. You're not a better person just because you like to watch seals out of the window instead of on TV with David Attenborough Grin
