Fantasising about a fictional character!!

I need your help and to know if I am a complete lunatic and BVU or if this is something that happens to other people.

I have always had a very overactive imagination and have a tendancy to daydream but this is the first time (in adulthood anyway) that I have developed a full on obsession with a fictional character. Not the actor who plays this character, but the character himself! Last night I found myself googling this character and falling into the rabbit hole of the Internet and finding reams of erotic fan fiction. I am ashamed to say I found myself still awake at 2am after reading through tons these short stories call me niave but I had no idea this stuff existed before! I feel such a dork!

Am I abnormal? What does this say about this verging on middle-aged married mother? My marriage and sex life are good, I love my husband and find him very attractive, I don't feel depressed or lonely. What is going on?!

Just looked at Wattpad. Is it mostly HP stuff? There doesn't seem to be a decent way to search by fandom.

There should LOADS of everything you can imagine, but some fairly shit ones too. You should be able to search for tags that will flag up matches, so if you wanted a specific ship, you could search "Sirius x remus" (a HP example) and it should bring up anything with that in the tags or description, not just the title.

Just for you @MakingPlans21 I searched for Alf & Ailsa fic, and although there is Home & Away fic on both AO3 and ff.net, Alf & Ailsa appears to be an underserved niche...

I think it's fairly normal. Many male characters are written by women and so viewed through the female gaze unlike most films and tv shows.

I myself have a penchant for a particular brooding Fire Lord. It can be annoying when you list after someone not really, but just remember it's a fantasy and have fun with it. Might go see if there's any fan fiction about my fictional crush...

Uncharted-Nathan Drake I don't even play it, but my 17 yr old daughter does. I feign an interest in the game while she's playing and explains everything to me while I just gaze at Nathan ! She knows and finds it hilarious !

Thing is - the whole crush will just end and I will be sane again for a year or two behind it restarts.

To be honest, I am literally only just delving into all of this so haven't really found a preference yet. I read a good one last night which was SSxHG which seems a common theme. What was the pairing in your PDF fic? Sounds intriguing.

We def need a fanfic thread, considering the amount of posters here into the same.

hens let me see if I can find it. I found two brilliant ones - I reread them.

The severus thing is weird- for me it was the “Always” bit that triggered it. And of course Alan Rickman who I love. And the character in my head is expanded by all the fanfic I read - some of its brilliant. Also had a thing for Lupin. Jeezo. I haven’t told anyone this stuff. “DH, I’m in love with a person who is a fictional wizard from a children’s book”.

I am aware I sound unhinged but for me it’s pure and utter escapism from my rather stressful life!

Also love Jamie Fraser (not the actor) and Jack Reacher.

Yeah, I think Wattpad has a higher concentration of younger readers, but is better than FF and A03 on mobile, the best ones always seem to be on the latter (IMHO).

I'm with you. A lot of it is the character, not the actor (although AR is devine - that voice! 😛). There is so much torment and tragedy about his character. But also the fact that he is ridiculously intelligent which I find utterly irresistible. Yum!

I've never told anyone IRL about this (don't think I ever could), so it is so liberating to tell all on here and to know that I'm not a complete lunatic. It's comforting to know there are reams of other people who do this!!

I had this happen to me recently out of nowhere when a certain character from a certain show I watch every day suddenly left dramatically. I was in actual grief and torment and thinking about him constantly for a week. I think it was because I got attached to his 'more exciting than mine' life during the lockdown. It's harmless though , in my opinion. Better than fantasising about someone real who could actually bring complications to your life!

I think it's a very healthy way to bring up hidden feelings and desires.

Back in the day I was a student in Fred and George's year and the professor and I were having a torrid affair. Now I realise how skeezy and gross that is and for the past 15 or so years I have been the muggle studies teacher during Harry's third year. (I'm muggle born you see and no I haven't planned an entire muggle studies curriculum in my head don't be so ridikulus) (I'm actually now more into my muggle studies curriculum than I am into Lupin).
