To think he might need to go to hospital? Don’t look at the image if you’re eating

Long story short, DH ended up with this nasty graze after playing sport at the weekend.

It’s hot, he’s in agony, but we’re not sure whether to just let him ride it out. He covered it in Savlon this morning (which apparently you’re not supposed to do) and so it’s been wet and bandaged all day while he’s been at work. I tried one of those GP video call things but they’re closed now. Wondering whether it’s worth a trip to the hospital or just wait for it to heal? We don’t want to waste anyone’s time!

Did they take any bloods when he went to the hospital? I’m surprised they didn’t think it was infected, especially with his temperature being high. I would keep an eye on his temp & the wound, if the skin surrounding it starts to get red & spread & any more weepiness or yellow/green colour coming from it then get back to the hospital.

Ffs it's cellulitis go now

Christmasfairy2020 · 13/04/2021 20:11

I'd go back to a and e!!! Need see Dr not nurse. I'm.a bloody nurse that looks infected. Draw round it in black ink marker and see if grows

Christmasfairy2020 · 13/04/2021 20:13

Touch the wound and of the wound if wound is hotter than leg its cellulitis please do draw around it this is important. If its untreated cellulitis he can die of sepsis left untreated

Squidelicious · 13/04/2021 20:16

If it's a graze caused by friction then it will most likely be hot due to the friction burn and not necessarily an infection.

However, you can always go back to A and E if you don't feel the nurse was right. Personally I would trust a nurse over a doctor on infected skin as they see way more of it!

Odd that he wasn't given the dressing (I know exactly which ones you mean)

Hope it heals soon.

YumLemonCheesecake · 13/04/2021 20:18

How is he/the wound today?

icedgem85 · 13/04/2021 20:20

Looks like road rash, infection risk is very high it needs to be properly cleaned and he needs antibiotics. If he gets a temperature or the area spreads go back for more info. It will look worse before it gets better too! My husband did it and he had to go to hospital for daily redressing for weeks. Hope he recovers quickly!

EatTheRich · 13/04/2021 20:22

Any update?

babbaloushka · 13/04/2021 20:23

111, not A and E but minor injuries if there's one nearby. A and E will dress it and send you home. It needs to be dry.

Cokecake · 13/04/2021 20:41

Like others have said I would keep an eye on him since coming back from a&e

Natsku · 13/04/2021 20:41

I wonder why the nurse was confident it wasn't infected considering he had a high temperature. Did she check his CRP level?

SarahBellam · 13/04/2021 20:44

@1Morewineplease

Could he poo to a pharmacist? They would be best placed to advise as they could see the wound first hand.
My sister is a pharmacist and has requested than nobody poo to her Grin

@Christmasfairy2020

Ffs it's cellulitis go now
I was just thinking the same. DS2 had a small scratch from a tree, got feverish and the infection was spreading, took him to A&E and he was kept in for a couple of days with a drip as he had developed cellulitis.

And bollocks to the poster who said Come on. It’s just a graze.

duvetdreaming · 13/04/2021 21:20

I had a graze much like that a few years ago, about all the medics did was put iodine on it - this was in a hot country where they routinely use iodine - and bandaged it up. The iodine hurt more than the graze did! Not much chance of them using it here I'd have thought.

AuditAngel · 13/04/2021 21:20

DD2 fell off her bike 2 weeks ago and grazed her hand. She was given an x-ray, no breaks, but it identified grit in her hand which was removed.

She was given special dressings that suck any goo out of the wound, but stop it from drying out. Hydrocolloid dressings, but these were different to ones we had previously had.

Therewereroses · 13/04/2021 21:21

While it's grazed, it looks red and inflamed beneath the graze.
I wish people would read the updates or even the OP.
He had a temp, he called 111 and has been to A&E and sent home.

ShirleyPhallus · 13/04/2021 21:23

Is he better today @Anothernamechange38?

Theglassmakerofmurano · 13/04/2021 21:25

It just looks like a friction burn. They are painful. Hope he feels better soon.

joystir59 · 13/04/2021 21:35

A&E asap.

diddl · 13/04/2021 21:48

@joystir59

A&E asap.
He went 24hrs ago!
9t9r3dballoon · 13/04/2021 21:50

My OH has had nasty grazes like that a few times after football, he never bothers to have them seen to but that's because they've never been weeping (that I'm aware of) nor has he ever had a temperature after sustaining them.

I hope the second one is right and that it's not infected, your poor DH.

SionnachGlic · 13/04/2021 22:12

He should try a salt water bath where he can dip knee in & out. Make sure its properly clean & leave it to air dry. Light bandaging overnight to protect from sheets. If it is still hot & swollen in morning then he might need GP for antibiotic if it looks infected. Take some paracetamol overnight if sore & to prevent temperature in case infection brewing...

SionnachGlic · 13/04/2021 22:13

Sorry...just saw updated posts...ignore!

EugenesAxe · 13/04/2021 23:42

Well yes, I would. He could be developing cellulitis; I knew someone who ended up with a skin grafted limb after a seemingly innocuous scrape. I mean it should be OK as it's recent but you'd want doctors checking to see if he needs ABs or whatever, rather than risk something very serious.

CSIblonde · 13/04/2021 23:55

Unless it's getting worse, I wouldn't. Put some dettol in boiled water that's cooled . Dip in a cotton wool ball then apply. That should ckeqn it out, calm it right down & dry up any weeping. And aloe Vera gel from the chemist, the cheapo £1.50 tube once it's not weeping. Worked like a charm on V sore 6inch gash from falling down stone steps .
