To think he might need to go to hospital? Don’t look at the image if you’re eating

Long story short, DH ended up with this nasty graze after playing sport at the weekend.

It’s hot, he’s in agony, but we’re not sure whether to just let him ride it out. He covered it in Savlon this morning (which apparently you’re not supposed to do) and so it’s been wet and bandaged all day while he’s been at work. I tried one of those GP video call things but they’re closed now. Wondering whether it’s worth a trip to the hospital or just wait for it to heal? We don’t want to waste anyone’s time!

Wouldn't be surprised if he needs antibiotics in the next few days. I once ignored something like this until it could no longer put weight on the leg.

SD1978 · 12/04/2021 23:55

I wouldn't say from the photo I'd look at that and assume it's infected- these grazes do go a yellowy colour when they are healing. And yes- wet bandaging- used to say dry but turns out the healing time is about the same, and it's less painful kept moist.

mellicauli · 13/04/2021 00:22

spray antisceptic are very good for this kind of thing I find

purplebunny2012 · 13/04/2021 17:24

@Meowchickameowmeow

I'm glad he went to a&e, hope he heals quickly.

Absolutely laughing my head off at 'poo to a pharmacist', what was it meant to say?

Not my comment, but it was obviously supposed to be pop
Size5s · 13/04/2021 17:40

First stop always a pharmacy. They are amazing. Go there and if they think you need a hospital or surgery nurse, they will tell you. Or they will give advice for home remedies. Highly underrated. Excellent service. Saved my father's life.

plumpynoo · 13/04/2021 17:41

Lukewarm salt water, decent dressing. Unless he starts to feel unwell or has a temp I would leave it. I'm not a doctor, but I am an Ironman wife, so have patched up some extreme chaffing, and road rash injuries! If you are worried, call 111. Ultimately he needs to decide if it is serious enough to go to A&E!

iwannafurloughmydp · 13/04/2021 17:56

Come on. It’s just a graze.

Clean and leave it open to Healy itself. If you cover it will get nasty and sluggish ...sterilised and open to breathe :)

(Unless he broke a bone of course)

Good luck !

ittakes2 · 13/04/2021 17:57

My husband had similar - he did it on Astro turf and it was a 3rd degree burn. The hospital used antibiotic cream and iodine on it. Also very surprised no antibiotic cream given to him as with grazes usually have dirt engrained.

Ddot · 13/04/2021 17:58

Pop to pharmacist, will advise you of best practice. Looks sore but as long as nothing inbeded should heal ok. Problem with gravel rash, is tiny foreign bodies which cause infection. May need antibiotics and dressing, so like I first said pop to pharmacist

Ddot · 13/04/2021 18:00

Yes vaseline is great and you do get a watery ooze from large skin abrasions

Toomuchtrouble4me · 13/04/2021 18:06

I would definitely go to A&E if it’s hot.
Wondering if anyone ever had any decent advice from 111?
I find them crap. Repeating your address 17 times to people with no medical training who tick boxes to assess if you need a hospital and then try to send you to one 10 miles away when you live almost next door to a world class teaching hospital.

TheBullfinch · 13/04/2021 18:06

Looks like Stannis Barathien's flaming heart sigial!

Bluntness100 · 13/04/2021 18:06

I am not sure it’s infected either. I fell a week and a half ago. up the garden steps onto the stone path, and grazed by knee, but it was just knee, not shin. Friends and family thought it was infected, and it was very deep, as in I could see fat, I’d taken so much off.

I kept it clean and applied germolene and used a proper dressing snd changed it twice a day, for eight days it was agony. Brown gunge. I actually thought I’d need a skin graft and it wasn’t healing. Two days ago it suddenly started to dry up and now I’m developing a scab. It only hurts occasionally now.

I feel for him, it hurts, but if it’s not infected it will heal. Just keep it properly clean and fresh dressings on it, and use antiseptic cream.

I used these from Amazon, he will need bigger ones.

If it’s hot and painful I think you’d be better going to A&E to get it checked out. They can also check properly to see if he’s got a temperature, which would indicate an infection - probably antibiotics needed if so.

roxanne119 · 13/04/2021 18:16

That’s the sort of thing that you feel physically sick just if people barely walk in your radius I can’t imagine how painful that is . I would ring 111 describe size and heat as I’m thinking this is infected .

dopeyduck · 13/04/2021 18:21

Yeah 111 - they'll advise you if a GP or minor injuries unit can help or if you should go to A&E - they're there to triage so let them decide!

Elle2018 · 13/04/2021 18:24

A pharmacist should be able to advise if you have one near you open

notalwaysalondoner · 13/04/2021 18:42

Looks like a serious graze, are you sure it's hot as it looks healthy otherwise? Is it red around the edges beyond where the skin is actually grazed, as that could indicate an infection?

Liquid savlon is better for open wounds as it dries very quickly but still disinfects. Best to let grazes/cuts dry and scab over rather than keeping them wet and covered.

Quit4me · 13/04/2021 18:45

It needs irrigating, and dressing. It needs to be covered and properly dressed.
Go to a and e if you haven’t already!

SausageDogSandwich · 13/04/2021 18:52

Ooh!

I would keep a very close eye on it. I'm surprised she said it wasn't infected. Sepsis can come on incredibly quickly and can be fatal so don't worry about ringing 111 again if you are worried.

imalmostthere · 13/04/2021 18:52

Hmm - if he has a temp and the area is hot I'd get him to a gp for a second opinion.
I had a bite on my leg that got severely infected, and omg it made me feel so so poorly! As well as sore, like I had the flu.

Feedingthebirds1 · 13/04/2021 19:05

OT, but 111 were excellent when I wasn't sure if DP had had a minor stroke.
SavannahLands · 13/04/2021 19:07

Please do not put anything else on this until you know for sure exactly what you are dealing with by taking urgent medical advice. Only by taking swabs and blood tests will they be able to tell if it’s infected, and if so, then by what? If it was on Grass or an open field then there is a chance that Animal excrement could have been present and the bacteria has entered the wound. It may even be due to an allergic reaction to Savalon, of being kept wet all day.
Your nearest out of hours or minor injuries unit may be the best place to get help at the moment.

Hoppinggreen · 13/04/2021 19:08

He’s been to A&E people and has been treated appropriately

Thisgirlcando · 13/04/2021 19:44

Call 111 and they can prescribe antibiotics to a chemist for you to pick straight up. I had an infected bite that got all hot and angry and they arranged it for me within 30mins.
