To think he might need to go to hospital? Don’t look at the image if you’re eating

Long story short, DH ended up with this nasty graze after playing sport at the weekend.

It’s hot, he’s in agony, but we’re not sure whether to just let him ride it out. He covered it in Savlon this morning (which apparently you’re not supposed to do) and so it’s been wet and bandaged all day while he’s been at work. I tried one of those GP video call things but they’re closed now. Wondering whether it’s worth a trip to the hospital or just wait for it to heal? We don’t want to waste anyone’s time!

@battleaxe2000

Draw round the edge of the redness with a sharpie if it's growing he needs treatment if shrinking leave it alone. Seek medical attention if your DH has a fever or starts feeling or being sick (I am a doctor and this what I would do).
I do this as I’ve been advised by a doctor to do this in the past. See how it is in the morning. It is going to be painful. A minor infection the immune system can deal with. Any bits of gravel will rise to the surface and come out. Takes awhile to heal those when just the top layers are scraped off, deep cuts heal faster.
georgarina · 12/04/2021 20:37

Call 111 definitely! Hot and agonising pain are red flags. Infections are no joke, had one earlier this year and it went into my bloodstream, had to spend a week in hospital on an IV.

Afishcalledwonderful · 12/04/2021 20:39

Ow that looks so sore! I tried to call 111 last week and couldn't get through so I completed the online thingy. It said to go straight to minor injuries so we did and all sorted. It's so raw and if it's hot, I'd get it seen to. Does he have a temperature?

expectopelargonium · 12/04/2021 20:42

That needs looking at pronto.

MrsCaptainJakeBallard · 12/04/2021 20:43

Not a doctor so I can't advise but wow that looks sore! Hope he's ok.

Veterinari · 12/04/2021 20:44

Large grazes often get sore as they start to heal. You've removed the whole top layer of skin, as that starts to scab/scar it contracts. This means that as you move the healing tissue is constantly being stretched again. This results in inflammation

It's often worse if the graze is a large area or over amount/mobile area.

Was it properly cleaned when he injured it?

I'd agree with salt water and pain killers and get it checked tomorrow unless there's spreading redness or pain

Thelnebriati · 12/04/2021 20:47

There seem to be red lines radiating from the top; if there is any chance they are under the skin and growing (not part of the graze), he needs to go straight to A&E.

Sparklingbrook · 12/04/2021 20:49

I would definitely get it seen by a HCP. DS did similar falling off his bike and it had bits of road in and all sorts. Nurse tweezered them all out and thoroughly cleaned the whole thing up.

TulipsTwoLips · 12/04/2021 20:55

I had a similar graze all down the side of my face. I went to our walk in clinic and they cleaned it and gave me what they said was eye cream. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Apparently it was great at stopping any infection.

Tallybo · 12/04/2021 20:57

Flipping heck that looks sore af! As its hot and painful I would get it checked out, do you have a minor injuries unit open at the moment?

Lansonmaid · 12/04/2021 20:58

If you have a minor injury unit nearby I’d definitely go and ask someone to have a look at it there.

GameSetMatch · 12/04/2021 20:58

Go to a pharmacy and speak to the on duty pharmacist, that’s what the NHS tell you do to with cuts/grazes. They would also direct you to the correct service if they are not. Don’t go to A&E

normalsaline · 12/04/2021 20:58

Looks bloody painful but surely not an a&e job?

Trumplosttheelection · 12/04/2021 20:59

Oh ffs! There is some rubbish advice here. Pain and heat indicates an infection plus it looks lousy. He needs antibiotics ASAP and that means tonight. He needs to to ED now. And then when he's got the antibiotics he needs to keep his weight off it as much as possible for a few days and keep it up.

Trumplosttheelection · 12/04/2021 21:01

People need to stop thinking a graze is minor. He's opened up the skin and it's got a reasonably big infection brewing. Absolutely an ED job at this time of night.

NoEffingWay · 12/04/2021 21:04

Have you got an urgent care centre? Dp, who is a nurse, says it would benefit from having a decent dressing but you need to keep an eye out for infection, specifically signs of sepsis. Does he have a high temperature?

Anothernamechange38 · 12/04/2021 21:04

Thank you everyone. Spoke to 111 and took his temperature which was high, so they advised A&E as no minor injuries around here.

He walked in and the receptionist said straight away “I hope you’re here for your leg as that looks infected.”

It started to weep a little once dried (that photo was taken straight after cleaning this evening) and now is yellow and weepy + high temp so hoping they’ll give him some antibiotics and patch him up.

Thank you everyone

@Anothernamechange38

Listen to a DR.

and Battleaxe is either a Dr or playing the long game very patiently 🤣

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 12/04/2021 21:05

Lol cross posted with you.

beginningoftheend · 12/04/2021 21:06

I would take it to be looked at asap I think especially as hot.

Our area has an out of hours gp but if I couldn't get in there I would feel it warranted a&e and explain you're worried it is infected.

Something can become more urgent if it doesn't heal well. Good luck anyway.

Hoohaahoo · 12/04/2021 21:06

I was going to say hospital too, glad he has gone there. Hope he’s ok

What’s the name of the cream they gave you please?
beginningoftheend · 12/04/2021 21:08

Oh pleased to see your update, hope he's ok soon

Meowchickameowmeow · 12/04/2021 21:13

I'm glad he went to a&e, hope he heals quickly.

Absolutely laughing my head off at 'poo to a pharmacist', what was it meant to say?
