Frames above babies bed. Learn from my mistakes

badmum82 · 12/04/2021 16:09

When my mum pointed out maybe I shouldn't have frames above my babies cot I just thought of all the Instagram nursery inspo pictures I'd seen and thought that she was being irrational. She wasn't, at some point last night/this morning my toddler either pulled down a print, or it fell down. We woke up this morning to screaming from the baby monitor, pulled the covers back to find broken glass everywhere, the frame and blood on the mattress Sad Cuts to 4 fingers on one hand, 2 on the other, the palms of the hands, cheeks, belly. I've cried all day, been to A&E, we're home now and I'm feeling like the worst mum in the world. Please learn from my mistakes, it could of been so much worse Sad

No one was at fault it was a complete freak accident.

Hmmmm not exactly true is it?

MattyGroves · 12/04/2021 17:16

You're not a bad mother. Literally every parent I know has a story like this.

Mine is the other day when I was closing a window for my toddler's safety and trapped his finger in the hinge. He lost his fingernail and cried on and off about it for days. I felt so bad and so stupid. But he still loves me just the same and has forgotten about it completely.

My DH's one is letting our older child burn himself on the oven.

Floralnomad · 12/04/2021 17:17

Don’t beat yourself up these things happen , hope baby gets well soon and your mum doesn’t say I told you so too many times .

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 12/04/2021 17:19

I had a picture in my child's room when she was small - I accidentally knocked it off the wall, the frame fell apart and a shard of glass fell and wedged itself into the skirting board - like, right in the skirting board like a knife. My initial thought was "Blimey, that was nearly my foot!", but then my dreams had "Blimey that could have been my child's jugular." vibes for some time.

Shit happens! Don't beat yourself up too much, just change your frames. I changed all mine after that!

It's good of you to share this OP to warn others, thank you.

You sound v caring. Your little one will be fine.

Sending you DaffodilDaffodilDaffodilfor your shock.

Isaidnope · 12/04/2021 17:25

That must have been such a shock OP, I’m glad your baby is ok. I had the same thought myself I must admit, I always get anxious when I see pics of shelves above cots.

Hmmmm not exactly true is it?

So who was at fault? The draining rack he knocked? Were you there? No. So fuck off.
MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 12/04/2021 17:29

We live and learn. I remember my mum saying similar to me when dd was a baby and Id used those big stickers.

She was proved right when I went into dd choking and retching one morning, one of the stickers had curled and fallen into dds cot during the night and being a baby she'd put it in her mouth. She was extremely lucky I'd gone to the toilet and popped my head in her door on the way past or she'd be dead. There's no doubt in my mind.

I'd also put plastic stars on her ceiling above her cot and so had to spend the next few hours removing the lot.

lalafafa · 12/04/2021 17:33

I’ve got a huge phobia about this. Wont even have them above the sofa on a wall.

HandsIntoTheFire · 12/04/2021 17:35

Aww I remember putting beautiful pictures above my toddlers bed in her new room. I was so pleased with it. Until DH came home and was like “um...no...” Blush

I also left an open bottle of neurofen on the changing table beside DDs cot, in my absolute sleep-addled state. There wasn’t much left in the bottle. Came in the next day and it was all over the floor. Totally destroyed the carpet.

TatianaBis · 12/04/2021 17:37

I've always had a thing about pictures above beds. It might have come from Flat Stanley.

thebillyotea · 12/04/2021 17:38

@Isadora2007

Hmmmm not exactly true is it?

how is that helpful? It's done now. It WAS an accident.
VenusTiger · 12/04/2021 17:51

OP I hope baby, and you, are okay Flowers. None of the frames in my sons room are glass, they're all perspex - when you replace them (one day) get rid of the glass.

amusedbush · 12/04/2021 17:52

When I was a toddler, I got out of bed in the middle of the night, tried to pull out the drawer in the bottom of the wardrobe and the whole thing toppled over. My mum says if the doors hadn't swung open as it fell, it could have killed me. Thankfully, the doors did open and I ended up inside the bit where you hang clothes, totally unharmed.

The next day my dad bolted every piece of furniture to the wall. You're not a bad mum - accidents happen and you don't know what you don't know... until you do.

northbacchus · 12/04/2021 17:57

It's such a shame that companies and online personalities make pictures over beds and bumpers seem safe, don't be too hard on yourself OP!

Plexie · 12/04/2021 17:57

@TatianaBis Ha, I came on here to mention Flat Stanley! I've never wanted to sleep with anything heavy over the bed since reading Flat Stanley.

Muchasgracias · 12/04/2021 17:57

@Lassy1945

Why did you think your mother was being irrational?
I’m sure she simply meant that it was just one of those unsolicited pieces of advice that mothers love to dish out and that DC love to ignore...and which occasionally tuen out to have been pearls of wisdom.
Trixie78 · 12/04/2021 17:58

I'm so sorry, I hope your LO is ok. Thank you, I've been debating with myself whether to put prints over my babies beds and this has resolved that for me xx

OwlBeThere · 12/04/2021 18:02

Ah I’m glad their ok. A mirror over my fireplace just fell off the wall one day and smashed into a million pieces. 5 minutes earlier my 2 youngest had been standing there. It really shook me up. Be kind to yourself, you weren’t to know ♥️

Why would you include the detail that your mum warned you but you thought of SM “inspo” and decided to ignore her?

Are you the gran? Is this a reverse?

iklboo · 12/04/2021 18:14
  • No one was at fault it was a complete freak accident.

Hmmmm not exactly true is it?*

Oooh I bet you feel so good about yourself don't you?

clareykb · 12/04/2021 18:15

Ah it's so hard when they get hurt. My 7 year old was ambulanced hospital recently after tripping on a toy on the stairs and getting concussion and I work in child protection and regularly advise parents on safety in the home!..I felt dreadful. The one that I always share is that my niece badly burned herself as a toddler pulling herself to standing on a heated towel rail. I had never thought of them as dangerous before (thought they wouldn't get that hot) but when I had mine I always kept them off or turned right down. I warn everyone about them now.

sadpapercourtesan · 12/04/2021 18:16

Oh you poor thing, how horrendous for you Sad
