To think it's actually insane to take your children to Buckingham Palace at 1am

I wouldn't normally 'pick on' someone in the news for their actions but am I alone in thinking this is actual insanity? A man took his children to Buckingham Palace at 1am to pay their respects to the Duke (to 'avoid the crowds').

He also says they were 'quite cut up' about the Duke dying. I mean come on - he's 99 and you didn't know him?! Why the hell would you drag your kids out in the freezing cold street to stand in front of the palace at 1am?

YABU: This is normal behaviour

YANBU: This is ridiculous

Am I being unreasonable?

Its something to do I suppose, after going stir crazy with lockdown it might have seemed like a good idea for an outing.

1am does seem a strange time. Very late for children.

If I was local I'd probably take my children at around 10pm - assuming it was reasonably quiet then. I'd not travel far or go in the early hours of the morning though.

I imagine the kids found it quite an adventure though.

People have been told not to go to Windsor but have been. I generally do as I’m told because I don’t want to be a nuisance but others don’t care.

I think they just wanted a trip out, I suppose it is Easter holidays so kind of harmless. Maybe they missed out on Captain Tom activities and wanted to be the keenest ones this time... Maybe they have the class bear for the holidays...

Anybody who goes to Buckingham Palace to “pay their respects to the Duke” at any time of day is a complete simpleton anyway, so this isn’t much more ridiculous.

I'm sure it won't harm them just this once.

I have another theory, maybe he is a divorced dad that never really got involved with family life but is now Super Keen Expert Parent and does these Adventures with his children in a show of spite to his ex wife, 'see its not that hard bringing up children, what did you ever moan about?'

Oh great, now we will have endless grief vampires all outdoing each other, blithering on how much of an amazing person they are. How they wouldn't/would want x,y and z like they have been besties for life.
When in reality the closest they got was seeing them on tv and know diddly squat about the person.

How did they get there/home?

Ha! Yes, this. Disney Dad takes kids out to experience history. Drops them off with Mum the next day completely knackered and miserable because they've been up so late, Mum has to pick up the slack.

Me and DH caught this live while we were aimlessly flicking through channels last night, it was so bizarre! Did provide a laugh though, our dc would be nightmares on camera at 1am - those kids were v well rehearsed Grin

I would consider it with teens, not with kids the age his are.

The look on the girls face, I'm sure she rolls her eyes a couple of times whilst dad is talking 🤣🤣

It falls into the same category of insanity, to me, as hanging around outside the Lindo Wing to cheer on Kate in labour. People do this but I can't with all the empathy I possess get my head around it.

Perhaps the kids got him mixed up with Sir Captain Tom Moore? 😉

Maybe they will remember being there as part of history evolving and can tell their children and grandchildren. It's a one off and children love being allowed to stay up late eg ours at the millennium.

it's the sm photo oppotunity, i was there, i was part of it all, everyone to their own. i can't be arsed for a complete stranger, just because someone is wellknown or famous doesn't mean you knew them or they you.

There was a family interviewed on ITV earlier - mum, dad and 3 kids that had travelled a the way from Manchester to lay flowers. The kids looked bored to tears.
