AIBU?

To think it's actually insane to take your children to Buckingham Palace at 1am

I wouldn't normally 'pick on' someone in the news for their actions but am I alone in thinking this is actual insanity? A man took his children to Buckingham Palace at 1am to pay their respects to the Duke (to 'avoid the crowds').

He also says they were 'quite cut up' about the Duke dying. I mean come on - he's 99 and you didn't know him?! Why the hell would you drag your kids out in the freezing cold street to stand in front of the palace at 1am?

When Charles and Diana got married, I was taken out to look at the palace at stupid oclock. I was bored shitless and wanted to leave.
I would have prefered to stay at home but too young. Had a "tantrum" as I didn't see the point in being there not like I was going to the wedding haha.
Didn't get to see anything different and could have done the site seeing at any other day of the year.

The dad obviously just thought this was his best shout at getting on the TV and the traffic is probably better at that time of day .

Personally it's not something I'd do, but it makes an event of a historic happening for the children and hopefully there was less people about.

I have another theory, maybe he is a divorced dad that never really got involved with family life but is now Super Keen Expert Parent and does these Adventures with his children in a show of spite to his ex wife, 'see its not that hard bringing up children, what did you ever moan about?'

Ha! Yes, this. Disney Dad takes kids out to experience history. Drops them off with Mum the next day completely knackered and miserable because they've been up so late, Mum has to pick up the slack.

Pahaha I love this.

I really just so very much can't see the point. They didn't know the (very, very old) man when he was alive, and he is now dead. He's not there. Noone they know is there. Nobody there knows him. What are they doing?!

I got a ‘this is a learning opportunity’ vibe from that segment. Maybe it’s sparked some conversation in their house about death and customs etc.

Either way, don’t drag your kids out on a field trip at 1am! Although I’d approve of it for a meteorite shower....

Can you imagine being their mother, seeing that on the morning news...

Shock "...oh for fuck's sake" Hmm adds another note to the family court folder

Utterly ridiculous and I can't believe the kids had any interest whatsoever in the outing

I was thinking the same thing
Totally ridiculous behaviour

Anybody who goes to Buckingham Palace to “pay their respects to the Duke” at any time of day is a complete simpleton anyway, so this isn’t much more ridiculous

Absolutely.
Attention seeking behaviour..

The young boy's remarkably articulate I thought, especially at that time of night. Perhaps they made an event of it and got a 24 hr drive through McDonalds on the way home. Might spark copycats seeking similar excitement

@junebirthdaygirl

Maybe they will remember being there as part of history evolving and can tell their children and grandchildren. It's a one off and children love being allowed to stay up late eg ours at the millennium.

This is at best a tiny footnote in history. Of course it was idiocy. The Royal Family have asked for no flowers, the Prince was an environmentalist so probably had strong views on the plastic wrapping and the air miles from importing flowers. Poor kids, having such a numpty for a Dad.

Bonkers. But the kids will remember it all their lives, and what’s the harm? Kids don’t turn into mice after midnight, it isn’t Cinderella.

I will remember with gratitude all my life that when I was young and in even greater need of a good night's kip than I am now, my parents never got me out of my nice warm bed and a sound sleep to lay flowers in the middle of the night for someone I didn't know.

Report
Yetano · 10/04/2021 21:17

The time of day is irrelevant. If it's really worthwhile, the kids can sleep in late or have a lazy day. I don't think it's good to be too time limited.

Travelling many miles having been asked not to in order to place plastic wrapped
imported flowers that you have been expressly requested not to for a very old man you did not know and whose many relatives you have never met so you can somehow join in is plain ridiculous.

There are so many threads from posters trying to be the most disinterested in Prince Philip's passing, I can't understand how there hasn't been a Republican uprising in the UK up to now.

Sounds like Dad was trying to make a bit of an adventure out of the trip. Kids might remember it as a fun night and if not, they'll get to slag him about that time he got them up in the middle of the night and put them on the telly.

There's no difference from all the bonkers public who camped out for days for Diana's death/funeral. Totally bizarre behaviour. Let's hope they don't start demanding the queen comes out to speak to them!

I couldn't sleep last night and put the BBC news on.
They has someone live outside buck house at 2 am reporting "it is very quiet here".
Maybe if the stop covering ii, people will stop turning up.
