Sender didn't pay the full fee

What do you do if you get a card through the post saying you need to pay postage before an item can be delivered?

I got a card through today saying we should go online to pay within 21 days. It is only £1.50 but can't think what this would be and not sure I want to pay without knowing? Not expecting a delivery and if I was I don't think a retailer would do this.

If we don't pay I think it just goes back to sender so they would know they haven't paid enough...

I would pay it as it is only £1.50, I'd be curious to know what it was. If it turned out to be rubbish it would not have broken the bank.

Paying the fee usually involves sticking stamps on a card and sending to the delivery office.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 10/04/2021 16:46

Oh gosh this is a scam! Royal mail put a card through your door if there is postage to pay.

LittleDoritt · 10/04/2021 16:47

For £1.50 I'd have to know!

MrsOsM · 10/04/2021 16:48

Its a scam i got the same email earlier, i just ignored it.

Tempusfudgeit · 10/04/2021 16:48

OP - I'll pay the £1.50 just to find out what it is! Send me your bank a/c no. for the money 😀

They did...

Hoppinggreen · 10/04/2021 16:54

My Postie put one through my door on Thursday so some are genuine
It was my usual Postie and I saw her do it through the window.
I have had the scam text one too but the card through the door ones can be genuine

Felifox · 10/04/2021 16:55

We used to get this regularly at work, people would put a standard stamp on an envelope larger than A5 or thicker. It was quite common and I'd stop off every few days to collect. We had panicked phone calls after I'd been away for a week as someone had paid a bill in cash and no one had gone to the sorting office that week.

Hoppinggreen · 10/04/2021 16:55

@ElderMillennial

And the other side with details hidden
That looks like my genuine one
Couchbettato · 10/04/2021 16:56

It is a scam. I know because I bloody fell for it.

@Couchbettato - what happened?

Not an email
PuppyMonkey · 10/04/2021 16:59

I've had cards like this several times, tis genuine. Cards through the door are usually legit. The dodgy ones are the emails and texts claiming to be from Royal Mail inviting you to just click the link.

LIZS · 10/04/2021 16:59

Looks legit. I had one a few years ago, which was a recall notice for something on my car which needed adapting.

memberofthewedding · 10/04/2021 17:01

If you are not expecting anything I would leave it as you have not suffered any loss.

Squidelicious · 10/04/2021 17:11

The card and web link are legit - not a scam.

Whatever has been sent may be a scam - or it could be legit.

But to all those saying it's only 1.50 - it it was a scam it could end up being a lot more than that if the OP entered details into a dodgy website.

SunshineCake · 10/04/2021 17:20

This is quite common. You are charged whatever the missing postage is plus a pound handling fee. You won't be able to find out what the item is until you pay.

This is risky. Could be something you very much would want to receive.

@ElderMillennial post a photo of you like. I've had them so should be able to tell you if real which I think it probably is.

SunshineCake · 10/04/2021 17:26

That's genuine.

FireflyRainbow · 10/04/2021 17:29

We have real fee to pay cards from royal mail at my work when clients don't pay enough postage.

Smalldogbigdog · 10/04/2021 17:30

@Couchbettato

It's not a scam, it's from Royal Mail. How can you have been scammed, learned from it and still can't tell the real thing from a fake?!?
LovingBob · 10/04/2021 17:30

Someone probably put a standard stamp on something that needs a large letter stamp, that's always been the reason we have had these payments to make.

RavenclawesomeCrone · 10/04/2021 17:32

I got a text supposedly from Hermes asking me to pay for an item they tried to deliver to me.
Obviously a scam, as I had only had a delivery from Hermes an hour before (I have the same Hermes guy for every delivery)
Text from Hermes say they are from Hermes- this was from a random mobile number.

They are so clever though, it's easy to fall for them if you are not on your guard.

category12 · 10/04/2021 17:36

The grey "fee to pay" cards through the door are totally legit and from Royal Mail. Someone will have forgotten to put enough stamps on.

Texts are likely scams

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/04/2021 17:41

A lot of people on here don't seem able to understand what OP has clearly stated (with photographic proof) - that this was a card through her letterbox and not a text or email.

You can send millions of scam texts or emails with very little effort and at very little cost, and if you get a few responses, it's worth your while - especially if you go on to exploit the victim's bank/payment card details to defraud them further.

Writing out individual cards and walking to every potential victim's house to put one through their door - and then asking them to pay with stamps, thus not giving away any bank details - is very labour intensive for very little gain. It would be a stupid waste of time for somebody to do if their intention was to scam people.
