At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

imo, it was wrong to close the rhs, totally,

but folks complaining about missing a bit of bbc tv, extraordinary

TheMoth · 10/04/2021 10:37

piggy I daren't message my dad. He's not a royalist and complains enough about the telly. even though we let him use our nf account

Twintub · 10/04/2021 10:39

Piggy oh I like the word wry :-)

I just heard a snippet and the footie was mentioned I’d never heard of it before. I think we are similar age and funny I remember the no ball signs now you mention - forgotten about it. I don’t think you see that so much any more Football

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2021 10:42

I can see one from my window if I crane my neck! They are usually by blocks of flats on any green space. I can see it is really annoying to have a ball thwacking against the wall mind. Increased traffic also put paid to kids playing outside their houses, I guess.

So it’s bad that people get to miss out on the enjoyment of some naice gardens, but people missing out on the enjoyment of some tv are “sad sad people”

Hmmmm Hmm

Twintub · 10/04/2021 10:44

I guess that and broken windows perhaps.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/04/2021 10:48

@Mousetown
there are alternative terrestrial channels, let alone streaming,

Mittens030869 · 10/04/2021 10:50

When we've got a 24/7 BBC news channels I don't think every other channel needs to be consumed by it.

^I agree. Especially when there are ‘world news’ bulletins, which are meant to report on, well, world news and not just one item of UK news.

Other important things are happening, like the George Floyd trial and the Covid pandemic.

Peregrina · 10/04/2021 10:50

the National Parks are great but still inaccessible to many many people

I don't think that was anything to do with Prince Philip - I think he was involved with National Playing Fields.

And I am tired of the comments that his racism was of its time. Then as now, some people were racist, some are still.

Yes, I am aware. There are also alternative gardens.

ohforarainyday · 10/04/2021 10:52

none of the elderly people you work for give a shiney shit? you are making things up

I work for a charity in a deprived and majority non-white part of South London. Our clients are primarily BAME, and all of them live under the poverty line.

I promise you, elderly black people, on the whole, don't give a shit that an old rich white racist has died.

There are alternatives to visiting RHS gardens....didn't stop you complaining about not being able to be in one yesterday though did it?
Not everyone has access to the alternative channels or streaming but you still have access to a park.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/04/2021 10:54

you have to pay to enter the rhs gardens, and book, and the op drove for a while,
i booked a national trust garden and luckily this was thursday, it took me ages to get there, i would have been totally upset if we were turfed out, so unnecessary.
this is my opinion.
i watched a bit of tv last night, and went to bed

HildegardeCrowe · 10/04/2021 10:55

Watch something on Netflix/iPlayer - I never watch “normal” TV.

Twintub · 10/04/2021 10:56

The real problem is , that we have no respect for anyone anymore.
We care more about absolute garbage on television, than the sacrifices someone has made for this country their whole life.

Respect has to be earned.

I respect Philip's war record, but not more than I respect the hundreds of thousands of British soldiers who served - in far worse conditions, and in many cases gave their lives, or became disabled and had to come back to a country that barely lifts a finger to support them - without recognition.

My own grandfather enlisted in the Merchant Navy at just 14 (during WWII) and was on two ships that were torpedoed and sunk, and spent time as a PoW, all before his 16th birthday. I have his war medals. He devoted his life to public service too, where's his TV special?

I don't consider marrying someone who happened to be born to a famous dad to be anything deserving of respect, and I don't consider being a royal as "service." Philip overcame true hardship in his younger years, and that deserves respect. But he lived most of his adult life with almost complete privilege - married a woman who adored him and turned a blind eye to his other girlfriends, gave him an entire separate castle with full household staff to live in so he could enjoy privacy and space and pursue his own interests.

None of that, to me, deserves this level of blanket propaganda.

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2021 10:59

Ah, OK, thanks peregrina. That does make more sense!

And you have to pay to watch the BBC. The fact you think people complaining about the closure of RHS is totally fine, but people complaining about a BBC channel being taken off air are “sad sad people” maybe says more about you than you realise.
AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/04/2021 11:00

@Mousetown
should i be worried? Hmm

notthemum · 10/04/2021 11:01

Haven't RTFT but
MrsJBaptiste and Phishfood. No. There are no plans in place at the moment for any time off.
Sorry 😞

The Queen has just lost her beloved partner of 73 years and I think that the coverage will hopefully make her feel that he is in people’s thoughts during a tough time.

So have loads of people over the past year. So have lots of my friends and relatives.

Plenty of people have been widowed, orphaned, lost children, etc. and not even been allowed to attend the funeral. Elderly women who are shielding have had to grieve entirely alone.

The Queen's grief is not more than anyone else's grief.

UnderHisAye · 10/04/2021 11:05

@BigPaperBag

For the people moaning about missing TV programmes, you sound like twattish selfish childish morons. The Queen has just lost her beloved partner of 73 years and I think that the coverage will hopefully make her feel that he is in people’s thoughts during a tough time. Get over yourselves, seriously, and think of someone else for once.
Yes an old woman has lost her life partner. What the fuck does that have to do with me?

Precisely nothing. And I detest the attempt to somehow shame people into displaying 'correct' behaviour.

TempsPerdu · 10/04/2021 11:08

So what? I’m sure my lovely elderly neighbour who recently lost her husband to Covid feels equally bereft at his loss, but she’s not expecting the entire country to be plunged into national mourning to make her feel better about it.

Most of us aren’t complaining about missing specific TV shows; personally I watch very little TV, and barely any live TV at all. What I object to is the compulsory mourning and the media presuming to speak on my behalf when personally I’m supremely uninterested. Literally no know I know cares either, so why should we have our feelings misrepresented and dictated to us by the state broadcaster?

That's the purpose of the books of condolence.

As an aside, are all the people turning up at Windsor bearing flowers - in direct defiance of the requests from basically everyone - stupid? Just wondering.
