Losing your DH after such a long marriage must feel like losing an organ. RIP.

The monarchy has never been as popular in the UK as today not least because of how well The Queen and Prince Philip have managed things.

On a personal note given all the trouble my child has had to arranage a wedding - first in March as the guidance said allowed from 6 March but the guidance lied and was then changed (ban in London since 19 Dec) and now in April and of course it looks like it will be the same day - never mind . We can certainly say prayers for the Queen during the marriage.

That’s a nice tribute

Well in that case shall we excuse Hitler then?

Oh, for fucks sake!

Lweji · 09/04/2021 19:50

At least on this thread, the post count to Godwin's Law was higher than in another one.

PS - I do understand Godwin's Law, in case anyone wonders.

In equally important news and as likely to affect my life, DMX has also died today

You could start a thread about it!

I know I can google but it is essentially the idea that any online discussion will inevitably end up in a mention of Hitler or a mention of Nazis?

hannayeah · 09/04/2021 22:04

Yes, that’s what I just read.

cariadlet · 09/04/2021 22:16

Godwin's Law is that basically any internet argument will inevitably descend into someone comparing somebody they disagree with to Hitler or the Nazis.

That wasn't what happened on this thread. A number of posters excused Prince Philip's racism by saying that he was a product if his time and that pretty much anyone his age will have come out with racist arguments.

In addition to those posters who gave the example of their own elderly relatives who aren't racist, one poster posed the rhetorical question of whether this means that we should excuse Hitler's actions.

If Hitler's anti-semitism was criticised at the time (albeit not universally) then that does suggest that there were plenty of people about who opposed discrimination.

Although, racism was fairly widespread when Prince Philip was growing up, there were many people who were opposed to it and mixed relationships weren't unheard of.

cariadlet · 09/04/2021 22:18

Thought I'd proofread but "racist arguments" in the 2nd paragraph should have read "racist comments". Probably loads of typos and other mistakes that I've made.

Macncheeseballs · 09/04/2021 22:21

Hey but he's not megan's racist, so that's ok

Mittens030869 · 09/04/2021 22:22

@cariadlet

But how do you explain the Obamas obvious affection and admiration for Prince Philip in their tribute if he was in fact a racist?

Macncheeseballs · 09/04/2021 22:23

Er, they're being polite?

Mittens030869 · 09/04/2021 22:24

I mean, they actually know him, as does Meghan, whereas you don’t.

Mittens030869 · 09/04/2021 22:25

They were being somewhat more than polite. They didn’t have to say anything, not all former statesmen in the world did.

VladmirsPoutine · 09/04/2021 22:27

OMG like totally!! Like Obama is so two-faced, didn't he like even invite Trump to like the Whitehouse or whatever to discuss like the transfer of power or something like that despite all the trash Trump had said about Obama during his presidency... like totally how does that even make any sense!?!

cariadlet · 09/04/2021 22:30

I should imagine that in a formal setting when he was on duty, he would be polite to whoever he was talking to.

But there are so many of his indefensible comments on record. I don't think they can be dismissed as "gaffes" or the typical embarrassing comments that old people come out with (which is pretty offensive to old people; my mum is in her 80s, would never come out with the racist crap he came out with and has been far more scathing of him today than I have been).

Keyring · 09/04/2021 22:33

There was no need for the Obamas to say anything. The fact that they did speaks volumes.

cariadlet · 09/04/2021 22:34

It does speak volumes. It shows how gracious and statesman like they are. The statement says more about them than it does about him.

yes but there was no need to make a gracious fulsome statement at all. If they thought he was a racist I would find it very odd for them to say anything at all.
Mittens030869 · 09/04/2021 22:43

I get the impression that some posters on here are desperate to believe that he was a racist. Why does it matter so much that he should be a racist?

I watched the programme earlier this evening about his early life, and about his mother’s role in saving the lives of Jewish people in her house during World War II, and his obvious admiration of her. That was very moving.

Mittens030869 · 09/04/2021 22:45

Tbh, I also thought he was a racist before learning much more about him today. Not just from the Obamas but from the former Archbishop Sentanu.

Yes, Princess Alice’s admirable WW2 actions — considered embarrassing evidence of her mental illness by her family for years — are having to work very hard indeed. Do they compensate for the fact that three of her daughters married prominent Nazis too?
