Do your DC wear clean (matching optional) PJs every night?

I'm a little bit ott about it but for me they have to match and must be fresh every night but after another thread about laundry and a discussion with DP apparently I'm weird??

YABU ... You can wear PJs for a few nights (shudder)

YANBU ... clean, fresh, matching PJs every night!

You must do a seaload of laundry for 49 pjs to be a drop in the ocean Shock

MsJuniper · 10/04/2021 11:01

Toddler changes Pjs every 3-4 days or when she spills her breakfast.

I change mine every 2-3 days.

Older child would happily wear his for weeks but changes them about twice a week when I remind him.

PerspicaciousGreen · 10/04/2021 11:01

@rabbitheadlights The way you describe it is really weird, though. Not that you personally prefer to go to bed in fresh stuff every night, but that it sets you on edge if everyone doesn't do the same.

My mother used to insist on turning my pillow over when she came in to say good night. She liked a cool side to her cheek and a nice fluffed up pillow. I bloody hated it and turned it back and smushed it down the second she was out of the room. Especially your older children, why can't you just leave them to get on with whatever they like?

thebillyotea · 10/04/2021 11:02

@Flowers24

What adults sleep in pjs? Sounds unbearable, just knickers for me ....
I don't like underwear at night, I wear tshirts...and I like them clean 🤷
katieg03 · 10/04/2021 11:06

We all have clean PJs every night..beds at least once a week. Towels. Footy kits. I probably do 6/7 loads a week and there is only me and my boys 11 and 7. I can't imagine fitting in food shopping, gym, football, a job and a dog with 7 kids so hats off to you! You must be super organised! X

rabbitheadlights · 10/04/2021 11:16

@perspicaciousGreen I've said up thread, I know it's not rational but just like your mum with your pillow, clean PJ's are not going to harm my children in any way so I just don't see it as an issue

OP posts:
HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 10/04/2021 11:18

I'm not sure there "no harm" if you're forcing something on kids they don't want. I bet they're conditioned enough to go along with it. Like the PP did, hated it but did it for her mums sake yet it clearly bothered her.

Elletine · 10/04/2021 11:18

We have fresh PJs every night!!! I can’t imagine getting into last nights PJs, I just wouldn’t feel clean Confused not fussed about matching though..... in fact sometimes I deliberately mix and match.

My toddler has a bath every day and so do I.... husband every couple of days. We try to minimise our environmental impact elsewhere in our lives.

thebillyotea · 10/04/2021 11:35

I'm not sure there "no harm" if you're forcing something on kids they don't want.

such as brushing their teeth, eating vegetables....
No one can call themselves a decent parent if they don't "force" things on their kids. Teaching basic hygiene and self respect is part of it.

If you don't like clean pjs or making your own bed every morning, no one cares, it's your choice, but judging negatively someone who does is a step too far.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 10/04/2021 11:37

It's not basic hygiene to have clean pjs every night though. I'd agree with forcing kids to brush teeth etc.

I'm judging the environmental impact and the unnecessary level of cleanliness. It doesn't benefit anyone.

carolinesbaby · 10/04/2021 11:47

No. Well, younger one is a bed wetter so I usually end up washing his entire bed every day. Older one will wear same PJs for 2/3 nights. They lasted a week when we were kids! Clean ones on a Sunday on bath night.

rabbitheadlights · 10/04/2021 11:58

I can just imagine of the children in therapy in a few years, " my mum made us, and you won't believe this - she made us wear clean PJ's EVERY night" ... Councillor "oh you poor thing, the horror !!... The damage that woman has done will take years to put right!"

Meanwhile back in the real world there's kids going hungry and facing all sorts of abuses!!!

I don't think councillors do much in the way of therapy.
firepita · 10/04/2021 12:12

@rabbitheadlights

Would it make a difference if I said I hand wash everything? I mean we live a simple life, no car, no foreign holidays, meal plan, veggie 5 nights out of 7 ... Jesus so I wash the kids PJ's a bit too often ... So what?
You did start a thread on it......
thebillyotea · 10/04/2021 12:13

I don't agree that it is unnecessary level of cleanliness.

Showering every day, clean underwear every day.. it's all necessary.

There's no lack of water in this country, so showers and laundry are fine.

thebillyotea · 10/04/2021 12:14

Would it make a difference if I said I hand wash everything?

you really should not. It's a lot more economical and energy efficient to use a washing machine (and a dish washer).

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 10/04/2021 12:15

Definitely clean every night here (and the bed changed fully every week without fail).

Apart from it feeling nice, one of the lesser known risks of having Psoriasis is that the various ointments, lotions and potions you have to use in order to not flay the skin from your body is that they are incredibly flammable when soaked into fabric. As I have absolutely zero intention of either of us or the house going up like Roman Candles in the event of disaster, clean every night minimises the ongoing risk as much as possible. And putting on clothing that is already coated in last night's Coal Tar/Steroid/Emollient feels revolting.

LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour · 10/04/2021 12:15

This is just a quirk of mine, the kids often wear jeans/hoodies etc for 2 or 3 days. I just want them to go to bed clean and fresh. I've tried not doing it, but I don't like it, it puts me on edge.

So your 12- and 15-year-old have to change the pyjamas that they've worn once, after showering, because it puts you on edge if they don't?

anothermansmother · 10/04/2021 12:16

Yep fresh pair each night, matching. Also clean towel too same applies for me.

PerspicaciousGreen · 10/04/2021 12:17

I don't think you're abusing your kids, I just think you're stressing yourself over nothing and causing a huge amount of unnecessary washing. Clean pyjamas EVERY NIGHT is not a hygiene thing, it's a you being weird thing.

Pupster21 · 10/04/2021 12:17

No hard and fast rules here. If they’ve managed to not just chuck their pj’s in the wash after 1 wear and remember they’re in their room they’ll wear them again. Often they’ll just go for clean ones then find last nights and put them in the wash. I wear my sweaty pjs 3-4 nights running though, I like the musk.

rabbitheadlights · 10/04/2021 12:30

@PerspicaciousGreen I know it's a me being weird thing I've said it several times, I've also said it's not a hygiene thing.

OP posts:
HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 10/04/2021 12:32

@thebillyotea It isn't basic hygiene to have clean pjs every night. This thread has shown that. Showering every day isn't necessary either, bits and pits wash is fine.

Water may be "easily" available in this country, doesn't mean its not wasteful to use it excessively though.

rabbitheadlights · 10/04/2021 12:33

@LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour yes they do. And when they are adults if they choose to wear the same PJ's for a week they are free to make that choice.

OP posts:
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 10/04/2021 12:48

But yes everything gets ironed including tea towels and underwear! (It's impossible to get unironed vests to fold neatly enough)

It's not if you have soft water. If you live in an area with hard water, you'll benefit enormously from getting a decent water softener.

I have a Harvey's one, it's brilliant. No more limescale and clothes that don't dry like boards. (Hate fabric softener).
