To think it’s about time all women were Ms or Mrs following this plane error

The confusion caused here could have had dire consequences.

Isn’t it about time we dropped the title ‘Miss’ to differentiate between adult women and girls?

I didn't dare suggest scales 😂
But I'd be happy to be weighed.
Too many snowflakes about to take offense though

LookAChicken · 09/04/2021 10:46

Or Mrs.

The90swereadecadeago · 09/04/2021 10:47

Well Master for a boy fell out of use si why not drop Miss.🤷

Agree. But a woman’s worth is still placed on her marital status so...

Pyewackect · 09/04/2021 10:47

Must have been a few heffers on that flight then !.

Isabella70 · 09/04/2021 10:49

@BigGreen

YANBU time to remove Miss as an option!
In fact why do we even need the titles?
Tal45 · 09/04/2021 10:51

I don't want to get rid of Miss because fucking Tui don't know how to find out if someone is a child or an adult. Everyone has to put in their bloody passport details FFS.

Benfoldslanded · 09/04/2021 10:52

I have sons and master isn't out of use. It still comes up on some forms and mail sent to them.

chubley · 09/04/2021 10:52

A decent IT professional would be able to program by dates, so the airlines could factor in a lower average for 2+ and under 5, another for under 12s, under 18s and over 18s.

Women's titles would need some kind of mass acceptance of a sudden cultural shift to go down to one adult title - the UK as a whole would be unlikely to agree on this, as women do have different preferences. I like Ms but hate pronouncing it, so usually put Mrs. Like others I much prefer the German system.

NRCS · 09/04/2021 10:54

I also have boys and the only time master comes up is on travel booking forms or sometimes medical ones.

I suspect this all reflects the ancient IT systems still prevalent in the NHS and airline industry more that anything else. Long past time for a rehaul.

MimiDaisy11 · 09/04/2021 11:01

I think there's an argument to made about getting rid of unequal titles but using this system as the reason isn't it. (While "master" maybe used on some systems I would bet a lot of boys just have post addressed to "Mr". It's not really something you hear being used.)

Also, lots of people are overweight so I wonder about the general measurements being used.

@BarbaraofSeville

^What standard child weight 35 kg? It's only about 5.5 st. A child in this case is age 2-16^

In airline world a child is 2-11. An adult is 12+, so some of those 'women' are actually teenage girls who weigh a lot less than 69 kg, so offset those of us who weigh more.

I am surprised that the average weight hasn't increased, but airlines must be sufficiently confident, and probably have a decent margin of safety, to continue using these figures.

The 11 st for an adult sounds like a low average.
TUI treats age 2-16 as children, so the teenage women will be 17 yrs old.

"The ONS said the average man in England was 5ft 9in (175.3cm) tall and weighed 13.16 stone (83.6kg). The average woman in England weighed 11 stone (70.2kg) and was 5ft 3in tall (161.6cm).(13 Oct 2010)"

I haven't got the hang of the Quote button. Sorry

Profiterolegirl · 09/04/2021 11:14

I would never want to be called Ms. I don't like the word at all or even saying it. Ms. Yuck. Miss is the nicest term of the three. I'll use it if I want and a plane making silly assumptions that make no sense won't stop me from using it if I want.

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 09/04/2021 11:15

That is surprising that they use that system. Also surprised they use 69kg as an average adult! Pretty sure that's too low

Profiterolegirl · 09/04/2021 11:15

I'd ather drop all terms and just be my first name and surname.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/04/2021 11:17

I used to be Ms until I got a Ph.D. Apart from the cultural context (why should women be the ones to be designated by marriage) 'Miss' just reads as 'Miiiiiiiiisssssss'. I loathe it. Mrs also has negative commotations as in 'the Mrs'.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 09/04/2021 11:18

YABU Women can call themselves what they wish.

If they called themselves Dr would the same system assume they were men and add on another 10KG?

However, I'm a bit thrown by a child’s “standard weight” of 35kg as opposed to the adult figure of 69kg Is that some sort of vanity weight?

Yes - most women who are not overweight will be under 69KG, but few men will be, even if slim.

So I checked the stats and the top google click is that The Health Survey for England 2019 estimates that 28.0% of adults in England are obese and a further 36.2% are overweight but not obese

Might I suggest that Tui are being optimistic?

SueSaid · 09/04/2021 11:21

God who cares whether you're a Miss Ms or Mrs , I am just staggered that it has any relevance to how weights are estimated regarding flight info Shock.

As an aside why do people call themselves Dr just because they have an academic qualification. We don't have people calling themselves Staff Nurse Smith or Sergeant Smith when not at work, even though they too have passed exams to achieve this title.

I assume you also include medical doctors here who call themselves 'doctors' outside of work?

Chloemol · 09/04/2021 11:25

YABU I am a Miss, not Ms or Mrs but Miss

Skysblue · 09/04/2021 11:25

I don’t want to be called Ms, it’s an annoying made-up word that sounds stupid and confuses people about how to pronounce it and it doesn’t have history behind it like Miss/Mrs.

The issue here is that the plane company hired a program software company from a country where they didn’t know English well enough to do the programming properly. That’s a budget cutting issue: basically they bought cheap software that didn’t work properly. Bad them. Doesn’t mean I have to start calling myself Ms - that would be yet another instance of women changing their behaviour to accommodate the stupidity of men.

flumposie · 09/04/2021 11:27

I kept my name when I got married so always been Miss. Plus it's what pupils call female teachers generally ( I'm a teacher) so it works for me.

RedToothBrush · 09/04/2021 11:27

Gosh. Its almost as if sex and age matter.

Maybe they could just ask people's sex or people's weight whilst booking, for legitmate safety and technical reasons, rather than tripping over themselves not to offend.
