To think people who drive

those tragic cars with a big fat gaping A-hole exhaust, sound like an amplified hairdryer?

You can't sit with a window open anymore, and it seems to have become more popular since covid.

To be honest, it qualifies as extreme noise pollution to my mind, and whilst it is supposed to be 'anti-social', bugger all gets done about it.

Just a simple walk to the supermarket can make you want to wear ear plugs, it's so violent and aggressive I have no idea what the fuck.

Who are these arses?

I've found my people! My NDN has a modified exhaust on his car. He's late 50s, leaves for work anytime between 5am and 6.30am. Wakes me up every single week day 😡

He doesn't just start his car and drive off, no he sits there with his car idling for what feels like forever.

Then on weekends if the weather is nice, we get the special treat of him tinkering with his car and revving the engine, which means we have to keep the windows closed 🤬

You can’t just start and drive off in many performance cars - they need warming up and cooling down.

In my defence (not that I need one) the only reason I’d be going anywhere at 5/6am is if someone needed transporting to A+E.

Not really, it’s a good idea to idle a turbocharged car if it’s recently been driven hard to prolong turbo life.

mindutopia · 09/04/2021 17:04

This has been a thing since I was 18 (I'm 40s now). Nothing new. But yes, it's annoying and they do end up making themselves look like twats. I never had a car like that, but I knew people who did and I bet they're embarrassed about it now.

DontBeRidiculous · 09/04/2021 17:23

I used to live near someone who thought it was cool to peel out and make the most noise he possibly could when driving, regardless of the hour. There's someone else where we now live (rural area) who occasionally zooms up and down a nearby road on his very loud motorcycle, again making as much noise as he can, the jerk. It's inconsiderate and obnoxious behaviour.

Utter bollocks

Sparklingbrook · 10/04/2021 14:34

How do you cool them down? 🤔

I’ve only owned one for 15 years. Hmm
DicklessWonder · 10/04/2021 15:40

@RobboCop

It's true. Old school turbocharged engines (Imprezas etc) need idled before switching off otherwise the turbo is left spinning at thousands of rpm whilst literally red hot without any oil supply, which can destroy it - many people have blown turbos pulling straight off motorway and switching engine straight off at the fuel pump at the services.

Most cars need some element of warming up too which is why many German cars limit the revs until the oil is warmed up and thin enough to fully lubricate the engine.

Not an impreza, but something similar. 15 years and 100k miles (so far) on one turbo. Only just had to have the original clutch replaced, such is my care of it whilst driving.

I don’t like idling on the drive so tend to give it a few seconds before setting off gently. Last mile home I keep the revs down to let the car cool and avoid needing to idle at the end. And baffled exhaust unless on the track.

I’m such a bastard, clearly. Hmm

SmallPrawnEnergy · 10/04/2021 15:45

Urgh we used to have this at the bottom of the street. Luckily they’ve either got rid of moved. It was only a civic too... they’re always such shit cars. There’s a bloke round here with a sad little mazda, I don’t know what he’s done to it but it sounds like a glorified remote control car. It’s utterly pathetic but he thinks he looks mint especially when they top is down. I’ve never not laughed as he’s gone past.

Sparklingbrook · 10/04/2021 15:49

Not heard one today. It's been so nice.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 10/04/2021 16:36
**@DicklessWonder waves!! My 16 year old is modifying his mx5, I drive a supercharged lotus, hopefully going to track it this year.. and I'm 46!

He’s not old enough to drive it is he? Confused
My DH’s nephew’s son is certified to drive stock cars at 7.

Not my thing, choice or interest but racing on a track is vv different rules to road driving

Sparklingbrook · 10/04/2021 16:39

You would fully expect to have your eardrums rattling watching at a race track too. Not so much in your own house.

I had to laugh at your post. I bought a coffee this morning in Waitrose, well in Cornish Food Hall attached to Waitrose, sat in my car drinking it when a nearby car started up and I was staggered to see a 19 plate BMW drive off.
