To think people who drive

those tragic cars with a big fat gaping A-hole exhaust, sound like an amplified hairdryer?

You can't sit with a window open anymore, and it seems to have become more popular since covid.

To be honest, it qualifies as extreme noise pollution to my mind, and whilst it is supposed to be 'anti-social', bugger all gets done about it.

Just a simple walk to the supermarket can make you want to wear ear plugs, it's so violent and aggressive I have no idea what the fuck.

Who are these arses?

OP posts:
poppycat10 · 09/04/2021 08:08

I totally agree OP. I don't know why they're even allowed. In fact, I don't think they actually are, which begs the question of why garages fit them.

They are for stupid young men with no brains. You never see a woman driving a car with an exhaust that loud.

Ditto having all the windows open and the radio as loud as it goes. Just why?

WhateverHappenedToMe · 09/04/2021 08:19

Some you can't win! Various groups are complaining that electric cars are too quiet and should have noise makers fitted. At least blind and partially-sighted people cannot say that they are unaware of the loud exhausts you mention.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 09/04/2021 08:21

When excess noise is deliberate its a mark of stupidity and selfishness. Cars, dogs, stereos, yobs kicking fences and bus stops at night.

Contrast justification of all this with previous MN discussions about the sheer horror of noisy sex.

FlemCandango · 09/04/2021 08:31

I am with you op. Lots of petrol heads round here. Unnecessary and sustained revving of engines, at all hours, modded exhausts, farting motorbikes - noisy bastards! I would like to round up and contain the fleet of noisy unsustainable vehicles and replace all with bicycles. But I don't think they would like that😂 I would though.

Sparklingbrook · 09/04/2021 08:38

Even the term 'petrol head' is Hmm. What's wrong with 'car enthusiast'?Quite funny really. Off to work channelling racing drivers. Grin

skirk64 · 09/04/2021 08:40

@DicklessWonder

I drive a jap import car and haven’t modded anything. It has a loud exhaust and very very powerful engine. I use a baffle when not on the track but it’s still louder than the average car.

I’m a woman in my mid-40s who likes to drive. And yes, I take it on the track. I don’t drink or smoke or eat meat. I don’t have pets. This is my fun.

I don’t much appreciate other people’s choices, like smelly log burners, motorbikes, cats that shit in my garden, the waft of BBQd animal carcasses across my washing line, sex ponds or trampolines.

So you do you and I’ll do me.

Please don't use that racist term, say "Japanese" import car.
DicklessWonder · 09/04/2021 08:52

. Still exist. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Come round, I’ll take you for a spin.

QuitMoaning · 09/04/2021 08:53

@skirk64
Why is it racist? That term is used a lot in the car world (I also have an import from Japan) but don’t understand why it is racist?

Surely racism has to involve negative judgement based on race/ethnicity etc and that term has no negative judgement. It is exactly the same as using Brit for a British person.

DicklessWonder · 09/04/2021 08:53

I had zero idea jap was a racist term. I just used it as shorthand for Japanese. 🤷🏻‍♀️

megletthesecond · 09/04/2021 08:54

Boy racers drive me up the wall.
Silly cars and bad drivers.

QuitMoaning · 09/04/2021 08:55

@DicklessWonder 👋

I also have an import but probably not as powerful, although I love it to bits. Don’t want to say what it is as it is rare and might be outing.

BurningTheToast · 09/04/2021 08:56

These exhausts are fitted by some of the younger male drivers in our village. When someone complained on the FB page (admittedly a raging mass of semi-literate rantings) one of the drivers popped up to say that it was their hobby. I can't see how that's a thing - you fit the exhaust, it's done. Then your only 'hobby' is driving round advertising your tiny penis and annoying people.

And it's notable that the surprising number of cars I see veered off the lanes and embedded in hedges with a 'police aware' sticker are small hatchbacks, often with one of these over-sized exhausts peeking out from between the bushes.

Correlation is not always a sign of causality but I do suspect there's a strong link between lairy youths in loud cars and unsafe driving.

Human beings spending their own money that things that cause a bloody nuisance to other people, and in the case of those with major sensory sensitivity, serious distress.

What, in the same way that another certain word is used as 'shorthand for Pakistani'? Hmm

CounsellorTroi · 09/04/2021 09:06

@DicklessWonder waves!! My 16 year old is modifying his mx5, I drive a supercharged lotus, hopefully going to track it this year.. and I'm 46!

He’s not old enough to drive it is he? Confused

Mugginyouleftrightandcentre · 09/04/2021 09:09

Surely racism has to involve negative judgement based on race/ethnicity etc and that term has no negative judgement.

I think you probably need to read up on the use of that word, particularly in the US after WW2.

It's definitely racist.

ErniesGhostlyGoldTops · 09/04/2021 09:11

@PrtScn

The neighbour round the corner had an exhaust like this, and he'd leave for work around 5:30am every morning. Would wake me up without fail every weekday and then I'd be kept awake by his howling husky. I clapped my hands with glee when someone posted a picture of his car on a local parking like a twat page all smashed up as his gf had crashed it.

I'm sure it's illegal to have an exhaust over a certain number of decibels as well, but don't think this is enforced.

Nothing's enforced in this shitole country. The quality of life in the UK is turning to ratshit really fast now.

I don't think you have quite got the hang of AIBU Grin

That's not why the term 'jap' is deemed as racist or the term 'Scot' would be deemed offensive by your reasoning. The term 'jap' is offensive for other reasons. Google is your friend.
RickOShay · 09/04/2021 09:21

I quite like hearing cars playing loud music Grin, it makes me feel nostalgic for being young I think.

Theunamedcat · 09/04/2021 09:22

We have a few that drive around the estate popping and banging around seriously annoying its apparently "fun" despite knowing they spark off a child with autism and he takes hours to calm down when they learned this they deliberately targeted the road he lived in and "late" night (late for a child so impacted bedtime) we asked the police to come around more often and they stopped but they are back at it again now I don't get what they get out of deliberately pissing people off

Macncheeseballs · 09/04/2021 09:24

I also hate motor bikes for the same reason

Not on public roads, no. But there are championships for kids aged 14-17.......

ExtraOnions · 09/04/2021 09:25

I live in a fairly small town, someone here has one of those ... it’s so loud it sets of the alarms of other cars as it roars past. It’s loud enough to wake you up ... what an utter gobshite.

There is always talk of it on the local FB page .... tends to be quite humorous - suggestions if sneaking up in the day and replacing it whilst he sleeps

DenisetheMenace · 09/04/2021 09:26

Until quite recently, I thought that they were broken and the owner just hadn’t had them fixed yet. I’ve obviously lived a very sheltered life Grin

Can imagine how that would drive you up the wall in beautiful, mostly peaceful Cumbria.
