@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

People will quote the Bible to support any damn thing they want, and don't care whether their quote is in the Bible at all -- any translation.
I’ve just watched five seasons of Greenleaf on Netflix and I don’t know why, because I’m generally against religion and not fond of Gospel music. Anyway, it was a serious addiction. It’s a sort of Dynasty set in a black evangelical church crossed with a murder mystery. One of the fascinating things was the Bible quotations for every eventuality. I mean, I was brought up a Catholic but all we had to learn was the Catechism, though not in any depth, and a few general purpose prayers. Very good writing and acting though, some of the dialogue is phenomenally good, and very funny in places.
Roussette · 14/07/2021 07:55

Oooh, I will look out for that on Netflix!

edition.cnn.com/2021/07/13/politics/infrastructure-senate-democrats/index.html

'(CNN) Senate Democrats on the Budget Committee announced late Tuesday they struck an agreement on a $3.5 trillion budget resolution that includes spending for President Joe Biden's sweeping social agenda -- and would be a first step toward unlocking their ability to pass their own infrastructure bill later this year.

The effort is separate from a bipartisan bill on traditional roads and bridges and is expected to set the stage for Democrats to pass reforms like expanding the child tax credit, offering paid medical and family leave and potentially even overhauling the country's immigration system. The bill is also expected to include changes to the US tax code.'

One of the fascinating things was the Bible quotations for every eventuality.

I'd always remind them of the Good Samaritan parable.
Luke 10:25-37 should shut up most of them, IMO.

If you can't join them, beat them. Might as well.
Bipartisanship is all very well, but the other side has to be open to it in good faith.

'The Trump Department of Justice attempted to obtain the communications records of three Washington Post reporters via legal action over 2017 reports on Russian election interference and Russia's ambassador, court documents unsealed Tuesday show.

Why it matters: The court order was lodged in secret the day before Bill Barr stepped down as attorney general last December.'

Love a Scriptural battle. Smile

prettybird · 14/07/2021 21:18

Watched the West Wing episode yesterday (Season 2, episode ?3) where Bartlett takes down the pretty but vitriolic religious talk show host, quoting the scripture back at her and finishing off by reminding her that in the presence of POTUS, she shouldn't have stayed seated (which showed how pissed off he was as he wasn't normally scripted to be someone who stood on ceremony - but he did expect respect).

Sometimes I wonder if the current White House are just working through West Wing scripts Grin

lionheart · 14/07/2021 22:51

I was just thinking about that today.

Oh and they have kompromat on him from his time in Russia. One can only imagine....

lionheart · 15/07/2021 15:23

One doesn't like to imagine.

DuncinToffee · 15/07/2021 15:39

Not really surprising but as I saw pointed out on SM, the Russian government couldn't have facilitated Trumps presidency if Millions of Americans weren't willing to vote for him.

Populations can be easily manipulated. The 2016 elections were won by 45 in a perfect storm facilitated by one James Comey.

edition.cnn.com/2021/07/14/politics/donald-trump-election-coup-new-book-excerpt/index.html

Washington(CNN)The top US military officer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley, was so shaken that then-President Donald Trump and his allies might attempt a coup or take other dangerous or illegal measures after the November election that Milley and other top officials informally planned for different ways to stop Trump, according to excerpts of an upcoming book obtained by CNN.

Ahead of a November pro-Trump "Million MAGA March" to protest the election results, Milley told aides he feared it "could be the modern American equivalent of 'brownshirts in the streets,'" referring to the pro-Nazi militia that fueled Hitler's rise to power

The book also contains several striking anecdotes about prominent women during the Trump presidency, including GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former first lady Michelle Obama.

I really wish that people would use the blunt, unpleasant word "died" instead of "passed", when talking about the death of someone they infected. It might get through to the stupid who are refuseniks a bit better.

I have a feeling he knows not to take it personally. But putting it bluntly, we need a situation where there's a vacancy whilst we still have a Dem majority in the Senate. And unfortunately 2022 is all too soon and there's no guarantee we'll retain the majority. In fact, IIRC it is common for the Senate and/or House to 'flip' during the midterms when there's been a change of party in the WH.
