To be getting fed up with "boarders"

joystir59 · 04/04/2021 22:57

...which are not children sleeping in school dorms rather than going home at the end of the school day; but the boundaries between countries, the correct word for which is borders. Borders!!!! Anyone else sick of boarders?

OP posts:
MsIreneWinters · 05/04/2021 10:05

Discrete/discreet. I hate these being used interchangeably. They mean completely different things!

Sinoatrialnode · 05/04/2021 10:05

@QuentininQuarantino

Less and less people seem to have a grasp of countables and uncountables these days. I guess there’s fewer importance placed on grammar.
😄
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/04/2021 10:43

Stationary/stationery
Complimentary/ complementary
Lose/loose
Practise/practice
License/licence
Boarder/border
And my real pet hate which I’m so sick of seeing

They’re/ their/ there

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/04/2021 10:44

And immigration/emigration

Pilcrow · 05/04/2021 10:49

They should defiantly tow the line on boarders.

But then, I’m bias.

Clarich007 · 05/04/2021 10:51

Oh I can't stand to hear
" He was drawring a picture" Ahhh, there's no R in drawing.

Glitterblue · 05/04/2021 10:54

Someone on my Facebook always writes "carnt" 🤯
Too many animals are malting, and I "carnt" stand the way people put an extra r into words like drawing - it's not drawring! And it's not JessicaRennis and the dog food is not BellaRand Duke! They even sing about Bellarand Duke on the advert and it makes me shout at the TV 😂

It's called intrusive R and about 50% of worldwide native speakers of English use it.

@Nelia5

Rest in piece my angle....every time
Just spat my tea out ! 🤣🤣🤣
QuarantineQueen · 05/04/2021 11:06

Affect/effect.
One is a verb, the other is a noun.

MumW · 05/04/2021 11:10

Local dialect swaps 'was' and 'were' as in
"I were going", "They/we was going" 😱

Nanny0gg · 05/04/2021 11:13

Phased when they mean 'fazed'

Grin

I was just messaging M&S about something and thought I'd point out their fewer/less confusion on much of their website

OnthebanksoftheLac · 05/04/2021 11:23

Discrete and discreet being used incorrectly is happening more frequently. I saw discrete used on an upmarket estate agent's website the other day. Apparently they offered a discrete service to clients.

Spidey66 · 05/04/2021 11:28

@Pottedpalm

Curb, when they mean kerb. I have seen that several times lately.
It can be spelt either war when referring to the edge of the pavement.
Spidey66 · 05/04/2021 11:34

@CharityDingle

What about tennants? Grin
Well they could be talking about David and Neil, and forgot the capital T.

Useless fact of the day.....David Tennant couldn't use his real surname....i think there must have been someone else with the same name in Equity or something, and it's against Equity rules. He "borrowed" the name Tennant from Neil Tennant.

Geamhradh · 05/04/2021 11:38

Rather serendipitously, there's quite a long thread about the discrete use of less instead of fewer (with countables) in Pedants' Corner (quite a while back now, before it was taken over by threads taking the piss out of other people's SPaG) David Crystal also has an interesting article on it.

LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour · 05/04/2021 11:48

@missfliss

These make me weary:

Birth when they mean berth ( tents / caravans)

Bare when the mean bear ( can't bear it)

Aloud when they mean allowed ( are we allowed)

Here when they mean hear ( hear hear!)

You've just used one of my pet hates! No need for a space after the bracket when you open a parentheses. Just look in any book or newspaper - no space!
QuentininQuarantino · 05/04/2021 12:07

A friend of mine wrote “walla” on her FB crafting posts and I thought it was a young person word for ages until I realised it was “voila!”

GreenlandTheMovie · 05/04/2021 13:09

Back to "boarder".

Do you think users actually pronounce it "boarder"?

Pottedpalm · 05/04/2021 13:18

Curb is the North American spelling. We are in the UK.
So kerb is correct.

Geamhradh · 05/04/2021 13:21

As opposed to?

ˈbɔː(r)də(r)= boarder
ˈbɔː(r)də(r)= border

Oxford English Dictionary.

countrygirl99 · 05/04/2021 13:22

Effect/affect and reigns/ reins bug me but the one that really sets my teeth on edge is bridal path instead of bridle path. I always end up with an image of a confetti strewn path with bows in the hedge.

Geamhradh · 05/04/2021 13:23

Examination boards accept both UK and US spelling (obviously) Though it's important to be consistent.
Pottedpalm · 05/04/2021 13:39

‘Accept’ as in ‘don’t penalise’? Doesn't make it correct.
They accept ‘eyesossiles’ instead of ‘isosceles, but that’s not correct either.
