To be getting fed up with "boarders"

...which are not children sleeping in school dorms rather than going home at the end of the school day; but the boundaries between countries, the correct word for which is borders. Borders!!!! Anyone else sick of boarders?

Something that always tickles me is seeing one of these mistakes in an original post. And then the first lot of respondents really overuse the correct spelling as if to try and correct them by osmosis but without being so rude as to point it out.

It's just happened on a thread about tee towels and osmosis has taken place by the next post, it's a joy to behold. 😄 I say this in a lighthearted way of course – spelling mistakes irritate me but I would never dream of correcting someone who's just having a nice chat on MN!

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 05/04/2021 08:30

There was a thread the other week all about a person having a business “brought” for them. I had images of the “bringer” carrying the business premises single handedly down the street and presenting the OP with it.

MagicSummer · 05/04/2021 08:38

Well, I am absolutely fumming about the state of the isles in my local supermarket!

justanotherneighinparadise · 05/04/2021 08:39

Call me a snob but I quite enjoy some of the terrible spelling that goes on. It makes me feel superior 🤭

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/04/2021 08:41

Nester tables ( sister of Chester drawers)

There’s so much shit written these days, especially on here! I go through the thread titles mentally correcting them.

AND get this! Ds has 2 MA’s is a journalist on national media and writes properly on there! But when he texts me, it’s should of and could of!🤯

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/04/2021 08:42

Tee towels! I raise you tea shirts!

QuentininQuarantino · 05/04/2021 08:49

Less and less people seem to have a grasp of countables and uncountables these days. I guess there’s fewer importance placed on grammar.

Huns2Getha4eva · 05/04/2021 08:50

I no, op, I feel you're pane.

DadsTrilby · 05/04/2021 08:51

You should slam on your breaks when approaching a boarder...

LittleBearPad · 05/04/2021 08:57

I am consciously trying to say UK "either" whenever I can but it still comes out US way usually. I don’t think there is a UK version. Both are ok so you can relax there.

In the meantime OP you are not being unreasonable! I’m not sure why the newspapers had headlines about year 6s being illiterate yesterday. Social media proves many adults are too. Plus before anyone says it’s SM there’s no need to spell properly, yes there is. It makes it easier for people to understand you. Rant over

Violetparis · 05/04/2021 08:59

Loose instead of lose arghhhhhh !!

Chimboo · 05/04/2021 09:01

@Mucklemore

But I'm so grateful we don't have to listen to "bregsit" all the time.

I used to find myself screaming at the radio - there's no fucking G morons.

@Mucklemore this has made my morning 😂😂😂 now I can tell my husband someone else screams at the TV/radio when all the “Bregggsits” start aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgh

Of course we do - it's MumsNet, and that's how we naturally teach our children language. I believe it's been found that the reason for small children apparently picking up other languages faster than older ones is because this positive, natural teaching style of modelling correct usage works much better than the negative correction style.
murmurlade · 05/04/2021 09:07

Yes @ErrolTheDragon thanks... I am aware 😄

Firkinhavinalaugh · 05/04/2021 09:12

I’d like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and put some of the blame on auto-correct.

However, some of these examples are just depressing. Even more depressing is that give it another decade and the original words will have disappeared and this new, hideous dialect will have taken over.
🙇‍♀️

I noticed yesterday, that an advert for Google, has curb side deliveries. Wouldn’t you think someone from the advertising agency would proof read?

Their spell checker probably allowed for variants. 'Kerb' is really just a phonetic spelling variation of curb - the etymology is from the French Courbe , Latin curvus. The function of a kerb is to act as a curb.Grin

My local corner shop sells stationary.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/04/2021 09:22

A ‘favourite’ of mine is the flower ‘boarders’ so beloved of many estate agents.
Along with shower ‘cubicals’ of course.

Chickychickydodah · 05/04/2021 09:23

Mumblechum0
Also, aloud, as in, are we aloud to do that 🙄

This one wants me to go aarrrrgghhh 😡😩

BreatheAndFocus · 05/04/2021 09:37

People in the west Midlands (among other areas) have always used "mom"

My issue was the affectation of people who always used Mum swapping to Mom, as I hope I explained. If ‘mom’ is what someone’s always used, then obviously that’s different 😊

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 05/04/2021 09:43

I get more upset by US spelling. Dear Mr Gates, it is English, not American English in the UK.

SallySycamore · 05/04/2021 09:55

I’ve also seen dogs in ads described as ”non-malting” and puppies as home-bread!

I saw "hyperallegenic" the other day. I suppose they could be, but I'm not sure I'd be advertising that!

Ginuwine · 05/04/2021 09:55

Go to any weight loss thread on here and you'll find "loose" within 20 posts

RaspberryCoulis · 05/04/2021 09:57

Agree. The two words don't even sound the same (in my accent). And neither do lose and loose.

SallySycamore · 05/04/2021 10:00

Although I should remember to let he who is without sin etc.

It's Easter, so I've just been reminded about the piece of writing I did all about Pontius Pilot. For years my family have added an aeroplane into our Easter celebrations.
