Cheeky tourist used my address for their takeaway!!

I live near a park, so we get a lot of tourists in the area.

Today, some girl visiting the park ordered herself an uber eats delivery to specifically my exact address so I had a driver knocking on my door. I thought he must be in the wrong place so asked to look at the address so I could direct him, as that sometimes happens, but it was my full address on there! It's quite an obscure address as well as it has a different postcode to the rest of the street and the house has a name instead of a number, which we don't display so you would need to look it up to get the whole thing. There was even a description in the delivery instructions.

She wasn't close by to receive the delivery either and the poor driver was really confused and awkward and was trying to call her and she didnt pick up her phone, and he was stuck waiting there for quite a while going are you sure it's not yours, you dont know anyone called name that could have sent it, it's been paid for so I have to deliver it, the person who ordered it needs to be at the address it's ordered to. I felt so bad for him.

AIBU to think that is blo*dy rude?! I might not have minded if she had asked first or had been around to receive it but to me I just think its really inconsiderate. When she finally turned up I asked her if she didnt think it was a bit inappropriate and rude and told her not to ever do it again and she just acted like I had been super offensive and sarcastically told me to have a nice day.

Some tourists can be so lovely and others are just so self absorbed.

I live across the road from a park and had never even thought about this maybe happening. Will be on the lookout for random takeaways now - probably unlikely as there is a chippy/pizza/kebab place up the road that will take care of most palates, but still.

Yanbu at all for being annoyed, that’s so cheeky.

CompleteBarstool · 04/04/2021 20:41

I didn't realis it was a "thing" to order takeaways to a random stranger's house.

It makes me wonder now about the couple that my neighbour found happily tucking into their early evening meal on our shared driveway. (Admittedly there's an amazing view from our drive but it's very clearly a driveway and not a public area!)

It is a form of impersonation perhaps or a step towards identity fraud. I would not have handed over the food at all. Challenged them to call the police if they wanted it.

Good grief. As if the police don't have enough to do Confused

What an obnoxious response. Not even particularly intelligent either, how embarrassing for you. Bless.

How is it remotely identity fraud?

The order is under their name, on their account and paid for on their card.

This one was rude for not being there when the delivery arrived, but identity fraud is a ridiculous over-reaction.

Treemama · 04/04/2021 20:45

Once I was waiting for a pizza I had paid and all when a youngster, who I don't know, spotted the delivery guy and was trying to convince him that the pizza was for him, he even walked all the way to my front door. Luckily the delivery guy knocked at my door, then the young fellow ran away as I opened the door.
I would assume all delivery people would have to deliver to the address just in case of any chancer trying to get a free meal.

It’s not. It is literally ordered and paid in their name. The address the order is linked to is the card address. It’s all pre-paid so it’s not like there is any risk of them defaulting anyway.
Kettledodger · 04/04/2021 20:49

If you can show the card that the meal has been paid with then that is usually enough IME

Identity fraud! Give over. They presumably never pretended to be the OP!
womaninatightspot · 04/04/2021 20:50

We used to deliver to the roundabout at the base of Arthur's seat in Edinburgh when I worked in a pizza place.

StanfordPines · 04/04/2021 20:51

@Kettledodger

Just maybe sit there and think about this .. .especially at the moment. There are no restaurants, pubs or cafes open. We are allowed to go for drives to touristy places and summertime has just begun so it is lighter longer. You have spent a lovely day out and need to eat before heading home. You can't go anywhere to eat so have to order. They wont let you order without an address so you put an address in next to the park. She was wrong for not being there to intercept that's all.
You think about it in advance and take a picnic with a bit of an extra snack at the end of the day.

It’s what we all did a few years ago before you could do stuff like this.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 04/04/2021 20:53

I had trouble for a while with a local taxi firm. This was pre app days where everyone paid cash, but someone had jumped in a taxi I had ordered then did a runner with out paying. No police called luckily (or unluckily not sure which) but it shows how easy it is to cause difficulties for an innocent person. The only way I could get them to take me again was to pay the driver upfront.

And the prize for the MOST ridiculous post on MN for 2021 goes to...
CrazySheepLady · 04/04/2021 20:53

I never knew this was a thing!

How bloody rude, and lazy, of that person, and anyone else who does the same.

thenightsky · 04/04/2021 20:54

I wish people would throw food at me. Sadly not a single delivery service operates around here.

Feel sorry for me now.

GabsAlot · 04/04/2021 20:55

fuck it id eat it myself

JoBrodie · 04/04/2021 20:56

I'd just explain I'd not ordered the meal and wouldn't accept it. Quite impressed by the cheek of the park visitor though.

Jo

StanfordPines · 04/04/2021 20:57

@PinkTonic

It makes sense now. I couldn’t get my head around taking stuff to a park and then just walking away and leaving all the crap behind, I mean it’s such a straightforward concept to bring it, then take it away. But no, it doesn’t occur to them to take the crap away because they didn’t bring it, they aren’t responsible for it because someone brought it to them. Clearly it’s someone else’s job to clear it up.
I know everyone is taking the piss out of this post but I see what Pink Tonic means. If you carry the stuff to the park with you there is no reason you can’t take it home. But if someone else brings it then your mentality might be that you can just leave it there.

There has been a dreadful amount of litter. I wonder how much of it is takeaway containers.

She should of asked first but I also couldn't get worked up about it.
Bet you would if it was your bedtime matey. Hmm

memberofthewedding · 04/04/2021 21:06

I would certainly have taken and eaten the unexpected gift. I would have claimed that I thought it was a gift from my friend X. Cheeky mare.

I dont open the door unless Im expecting someone so the poor driver would have been stood outside banging on my door.

My nephew and I send for a deliveroo about once or twice a month so when he can see the driver approaching on the app he is out there to claim the meal.
