Is this weird or am I a slattern

I think it totally fine to wash tee towels in with clothes washing .
My partner thinks they should be washed separately on a hot wash.
He thinks it just not right to have tee towels and underwear washed together as its unhygienic.
My clothes washing is on a 40 degrees wash.
Tell me Im not mad .
Happy Easter everyone.

@Spidey66

Sorry that was the same as STDG a few posts earlier. J cloth was definitely a brand of cloths.
Great minds think alike, @Spidey66!
Merename · 05/04/2021 10:45

@YourCakesAreShit

Fellow slattern signing in.

Until I die of some terrible towel-borne illness, I will continue to throw everything in at 40.

Hahaa same here.

Reading threads like this one makes me wonder how on earth I have got to my late 60’s without dying/killing my family with some unmentionable disease caused by incorrectly doing the laundry!
I do clothes on 30°unless particularly dirty, bedding on 40° and towels/tea towels 50°.
Generally none of the laundry is particularly dirty, we bathe/shower before bed and bedding is changed weekly along with towels.If you have unpleasant smelling items after washing then you’re either not washing them (or yourself!) often enough or not using enough detergent.

emmetgirl · 05/04/2021 10:51

Well if your partner thinks they should be washed separately then he is welcome to spend his time doing so. That's what I'd be saying to him

YanTanTethera123 · 05/04/2021 10:52

And I’m definitely a slattern from time to time 😊

Maudythebudgie · 05/04/2021 10:57

I am a total grot. Our sheets haven't been changed in quite a while. But I wash my tea towels separately at 60⁰c. At last! Something I can claim housework superiority over Halo

OnthebanksoftheLac · 05/04/2021 10:58

@Watchingthetelly

That thing when you wash and dry your hands at someone else’s house and they smell of damp and mildew. That’s towels washed at 30.
No it isn't. That's towels which need a wash because they've been used a lot and left damp. Or towels which have been left in the machine too long. Or they weren't dried outside properly. Anything washed at 30 and then dried promptly will not smell of damp and mildew.

For the uninitiated (Cokie, mainly 😁) I give you:

Is this weird or am I a slattern
waterlego · 05/04/2021 11:42

was reading a fascinating article about laundryshockgrin which says everything should be washed on a short cycle at 30 with minimal powder and laundry bleach, no fabric conditioner to extend the life of your clothes and even towels.

Ah, I now feel justified in my slatternliness. This is exactly how I do my laundry. Much better for the environment than washing everything at hot temps. None of our stuff smells, and none of us get ill 🙂

Also, yes, I’ve always called those blue things J-cloths.

HeronLanyon · 05/04/2021 11:54

This is all very complicated.
I don’t wash t towels with clothing - I cook a lot and I think deep down this so due to smell of garlic/onion type thought.
However I do wash t towels with small kitchen floor rugs (well shaken/hoovered) cotton rag rugs. They get washed every few weeks by which time I have 5 or 6 t towels to go in with them.
I suspect some will find this unacceptable.
My own dp finds this last unacceptable.
This is all deeply from what my mum did. Long ingrained learning !

QuestionableMouse · 05/04/2021 11:58

I'm not one of those people who wash clothes after a single wear or bedding once a week or anything but I do like my tea towels (and cotton dish cloths) washed in a 60. They have food residue on them (wiping hands while cooking) and I also use them to cover dough or baked goods so like to know they're clean.

PattyPan · 05/04/2021 12:03

I wash everything in together (just do separate light/darks) at 30 and it all comes out clean.

StrugglingToBeStylish · 05/04/2021 12:34

I put tea towels in with towels running gear or sheets - they all go in at 60

😇

Pigtailsandall · 05/04/2021 12:58

How many kitchen towels do people own? I couldn't make up a load out of all my cleaning stuff even if I tried.

Another one - a navy and white striped tea towel - does it go with lights or darks? I always put it in with dark stuff, my mum with lights. And we always argue about it because we're super interesting people like that Grin

Ninkanink · 05/04/2021 13:01

I wash tea towels and cleaning cloths together and it makes up a half load.

Ninkanink · 05/04/2021 13:04

If it’s striped with white stripes then the dark stripes obviously won’t run (otherwise the white stripes would no longer be white), so I would wash it with lights - that way it won’t potentially be dyed by your darks.

waterlego · 05/04/2021 13:06

I would wash the stripy towel in with other ‘fast colours’. ie stuff that has some colour but is neither dark nor white, so would include any stuff that’s grey/other pale colours or has a print of some sort.

Ninkanink · 05/04/2021 13:27

Tbh I wash all my tea towels together regardless of colours/patterns and nothing’s ever run. So I bung them all in together without worrying.

PattyPan · 05/04/2021 13:54

I would put a dark striped towel in with the darks - the point of separating is to protect the lights from dark colours running. I have about half a dozen tea towels I think, definitely not enough for a whole load even with dishcloths added in.

Rollergirl999 · 05/04/2021 17:19

I’m a self confessed slattern. I bung everything in together on 40 ( sometimes 30). We are all still alive and well.

Nohomemadecandles · 05/04/2021 17:25

I have no idea what a dish wipe is and any blue cloth like that is called a J cloth in my family!
I just bung tea towels in the wash 🤷🏻‍♀️

GingerGurl · 05/04/2021 17:26

I wash towels, tea towels and cloths together (and definitely no fabric conditioner!). Clothes should be done separately imo.

purplebunny2012 · 05/04/2021 17:32

Your partner is just weird for thinking that way

Thehop · 05/04/2021 17:34

I must admit I split towels into a separate wash but were a big family so it makes no odds. If we were a smaller group I’d probably have to get over myself and do it together. Though the thought of skids and pubes in with my kitchen towel makes me feel a bit gross haha x

Frogartist · 05/04/2021 17:35

@allgoodinthehood

I don't think they are particularly dirty though. They are used to dry the work tops (granite) . Clean one every day. We have a dish washer. So seriously they aren't that dirty.
In that case your underwear is probably "dirtier" than your teatowels, (iyswim)
