To wonder why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

I get supporting local pubs, but I just don't understand why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

Pubs are charging £15 for a one course Sunday roast (every week, not just Easter). Which isn't exactly cheap. I would have thought this would be pretty grim once you get it home, and a home cooked roast is far superior.

We've done it a few times this year. Local place charges £12-15 for a roast takeaway and it is totally worth it. I get pink roast beef with horseradish and sauteed tender stem broccoli/green beans/kale, giant Yorkshire and the richest gravy you ever tasted. They put it in a mix of foil and card containers and it's still warm when we get it home. We like to spend as much time as possible outdoors on weekends, and often its getting late when we drive home and we're hungry. One such day I had a big hankering for a roast and ordered one on a whim and it was truly the best roast I've ever had. So we have had one a few more times since.

I know how to cook a roast, but I'd rather be out walking or cycling all day when all of us are off work than stay in and cook.

If they are selling a single portion then for single people its much better. I would want to have to cook an entire roast wheb all I want is just one meal, otherwise I'd be eating roast for days finishing it off.

Its the same with the cooked chicken in Tescos, they often have it on offer so its cheaper to pop out at lunch buy two cooked chicken thighs for £1 and all I have to do is have it with salad. Instead of buying fresh thighs, marinating them and cooking it for ages.

I was extremely impressed with my roast beef dinner yesterday evening and was fully prepared for overcooked meat with tasteless gravy but it was lovely. The meat was tender and medium rare, carrots and parsnips honey roasted, peas, potatoes 'proper' ones (not Aunt Bessie type), lovely shapeless Yorkshire pud and beautiful gravy in a pot. Plenty of it too. I still haven't eaten the crumble and custard because I was too full up but I will eat it.

I remember an occasion back in the early 80s when my husband and the husband of a friend decided they would cook from scratch a full blown Chinese meal with lots of different dishes. They both had shopped together for all the ingredients.
They banished my friend & I from the the kitchen at about 7pm’ish saying we’ll sit down for dinner at 8pm.
The four of us finally sat down to eat at 11pm.
There were a dozen different dishes including prawn toast, crispy seaweed, dumplings, chicken, pork & beef & various vegetables tasted delicious, the kitchen was a mess with every wok, pot & pan used and not washed up.
We still laugh about it now and have never had a home cooked Chinese meal again. 🤣🤣🤣

Hi,
I have had a take away roast and it was amazing. £9.99. Lots of meat, veg, cauliflower cheese, roast pots, roast parsnips, yorkshire, a little styrofoam pot with gravy. It was amazing. Being on my own every other weekend when my kids go to their dads I sometimes treat myself. And yes - had my local pub not been able to offer this. They would have struggled.

LemonDrizzles · 08/04/2021 20:57

When I was in my 20s, I used to buy the ready made frozen roast dinner. It's a lot of work, peeling potatoes, and then carrots, and then other veg. Then sometimes roasts taste better when cooked on the bone. Imagine the pub, that you already know has lovely roasts, going through all that effort. In addition, you are able to support a pub during lock down in the hopes that when lockdown eases, the pub might still have a viable enough business to carry on. I guess it depends!
