To wonder why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

I get supporting local pubs, but I just don't understand why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

Pubs are charging £15 for a one course Sunday roast (every week, not just Easter). Which isn't exactly cheap. I would have thought this would be pretty grim once you get it home, and a home cooked roast is far superior.

I like making my own and wouldn’t spend that much on any takeaway. But clearly as per the replies above, it’s a good spend for some people. Everyone works differently and has different priorities.
Nice treat not to cook I must say. Tempting 😁

PollyIndia · 04/04/2021 18:44

I’ve done it, and it was delicious. Sometimes I cook. But I’m a single mum and nobody else is going to cook for me so why shouldn’t I get a takeaway and support a local business once in a while? Also no washing up. Plus I can have pork belly and ds can have beef. Why wouldn’t you is really the question to ask.

cjpark · 04/04/2021 18:45

I completely understand why a couple or single would do it, but at £15 a head and a family of four, there is no way I would be spending £60 on a Sunday roast to eat at home. We had a lamb shoulder today for Easter (£9.00) and I stuck it in the oven at 11 this morning for 6 hours on a low heat. Didn't touch it and went out as a family. Came in at 4pm, spent 20 mins chopping potatoes, asparagus, beans and had a Roast lamb dinner for about £14 for 6 people.

Mummadeze · 04/04/2021 18:46

I would because it makes a change from Thai, Indian or Chinese.

We've had a fair few takeaway roasts throughout lockdown from local pubs and restaurants. As others have said, they're no different to any other takeaway. It's been handy for us if one of us fancies a roast dinner but the other wants something else. It's also been handy for FIL who is caring for terminally ill MIL and doesn't really have it in him to cook a full roast from scratch when she isn't eating much. She has had a child's portion and him and adult's portion

To whoever said "they would be congealed and yucky", I've never had one yet like that. We get the meat, the veg, to the potatoes, Yorkshire pudding & gravy all separate and ready to serve.

Some of ours have been for collection as well as delivery, but we've never had one arrive that wasn't piping hot.

InFiveMins · 04/04/2021 18:54

Every single takeaway roast I have ever seen (or had) hasn't been great. Nowhere near the standard of a proper home cooked one with quality ingredients. Few 'posh pubs' round here doing them and they still aren't great. Tend to arrive lukewarm and the roasts can be a bit hard, gravy too watery etc. Not for me.

Foramen · 04/04/2021 18:56

What you say is true, NewAgeWiccan, but we've got takeaway roasts from our favourite Farm Restaurant partly when time is tight due to caring for wife's mother, partly to support the owners. The roasts have the taste and scent of said restaurant, reminding us of better times, and yes, I prefer my wife's roasts but why shouldn't she have a break? (She doesn't like my cooking; I Always Get It Wrong!)

I suppose there may be a number of reasons:

Can’t be arsed
Hung over and craving meat !!
Can’t cook
Working sundays
Busy with other things

Seriously I can understand it as it takes the hassle out of Sunday dinner, and not everyone has the time to cook a roast. I think in some ways it’s good as it keeps the traditional Sunday roast going, but it does seem a bit pricey.

HappyThursdays · 04/04/2021 19:03

Both me and dp love cooking but we sometimes order a takeaway roast to support the local pub (and for only that reason). They say their takeaway roasts have kept them going throughout lockdown! What's nice is we can order different meats!

fellrunner85 · 04/04/2021 19:09

Anyone who says takeaway roast dinners are nowhere near the standard of homemade clearly hasnt suffered my cooking.

Luckily DH always cooks so we eat pretty well. He's like pps who have said "oooh, we just chuck the lamb in the oven and it's no effort"... and it works. But if I tried that we'd most likely have charred inedible lamb, with inadequate veg, as I'm shit at doing more than one thing at a time in the kitchen. So if DH wasn't around and me and the kids really fancied a roast dinner, would we order one? Absolutely.

So yeah, I've never ordered one, but I could conceive of a situation where I, or similarly cba cooks, might. Are you always so lacking in imagination, OP?

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/04/2021 19:12

We had an amazingly roast few weeks back and was half price as just reopened

Agree £15pp is high if family of 3/4

But sometimes worth the price to not buy, cook, clean up

And course gives business to local places we want to survive

Etherealhedgehog · 04/04/2021 19:14

We have a six month old DD and nearly did just this today for her first Sunday roast. In the end we went with Sainsbury's roast in the bag chicken, ready to roast potatoes and ready made gravy, so kind of a halfway house. No way would we have wanted to spend that time cooking - she still won't nap in her cot so daytimes are far too full on to be bothered with that

roguetomato · 04/04/2021 19:18

Sounds nice actually.

drpet49 · 04/04/2021 19:22

* I would have thought this would be pretty grim once you get it home*

^I agree. You would have to reheat most of it. No thanks.

pam290358 · 04/04/2021 19:26

@Etherealhedgehog - love the name by the way !! I think you’ve just hit the nail on the head. You can pick up the components of a roast dinner from all the major supermarkets much cheaper than a takeaway, and it still takes the effort out of it - roast in the bag chicken, ready basted roasties in a tray and ready prepared veg. Just bang it in the oven and add some gravy from the chilled section (Sainsbury’s chicken gravy is fab). Finish off with a tin of Heinz treacle pud with ambrosia custard - what more could you ask for ?!!

Gracesquirrel · 04/04/2021 19:26

We had takeaway roast dinner today - and it was lovely. Like many have said its supporting a local pub (that prelockdown always did fabulous Sunday lunch) it arrived piping hot we both got to have our favourite meat me Lamb him Pork, there were 7 different vegetables, yorkshire puds, stuffing and loads of home made gravy. Ours came to £26.50 delivered for the two of us but that included extra gravy, roasties & cauliflower cheese the base cost was £10.95 each. Nothing was congealed or soggy or in anyway different to us having it in the pub other than they brought it to us. We both said next time we wouldn't bother with the extra gravy or cauliflower cheese because it simply was over the top even if it was delicious.

Admittedly I am now not able to cook a full roast due to some health issues but even if I could I wouldn't have made anything like it just for the 2 of us - too much work.

weightedblanketlove · 04/04/2021 19:27

We got one a couple of weeks back from a local pub 5 mins away as a treat and it was delicious. Veg together, gravy separate.

I make a roast most weekends but wanted the week off. It was a better standard than I could make- stuffing, 3 different meats, loads of veg etc

NP85 · 04/04/2021 19:27

Think takeaway roasts are a brilliant idea! If u can’t be bothered to cool, what wrong with ordering one in? Genius Grin

VonWeasel · 04/04/2021 19:27

Did this a while back and it was amazing. It's hard to cook a full on roast for two people when you have a 4 month old baby. Also it's not worth making tonnes of fun sides like cauliflower cheese etc for two. Ours came with lamb, pork and beef. I would never cook 3 meats and there was enough left over for a Monday roast. It was brilliant!!! Winner!

pam290358 · 04/04/2021 19:27

Anyone else hungry now ?!!

SavannahLands · 04/04/2021 19:29

For some people it’s the only way of getting a roast dinner, Disabilities and Old age can leave people unable to cook for themselves, and not everyone is lucky enough to have Family or a Friend offer to do this for them.

Long gone are the services that the Old ‘Meals on Wheels’ volunteers used to provide, and some of the Frozen meals companies suggested by local Social Services Departments can be very poor Quality indeed, and certainly no replacement for a freshly cooked Roast Dinner.

For some people living alone, the Delivery driver may be the only Human person they speak to and see until they order a Takeaway meal delivery for themselves again.

Cottagepieandpeas · 04/04/2021 19:37

To have a break from cooking for yourself for a year / to support the local pub in the hope it will re-open / to make a change from Indian or Chinese take away......

Yes I’ve had one a couple of times in the last 12 months and it was very enjoyable.

@pam290358 we did have sticky toffee pudding and custard for dessert and it was grand! One slice left to fight over later... Tbf, I would also happily try the take-out as well, perhaps for something like beef or lamb which doesn't really have a roast in the bag option

winniestone37 · 04/04/2021 19:52

Because they want to. Your question is completely moronic.

Sissyjd · 04/04/2021 20:05

I live alone why would I spent time & money cooking a whole roast just for 1...its ot that difficult to work out not everyone has a family/time to justify all the effort.
