To wonder why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

I get supporting local pubs, but I just don't understand why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

Pubs are charging £15 for a one course Sunday roast (every week, not just Easter). Which isn't exactly cheap. I would have thought this would be pretty grim once you get it home, and a home cooked roast is far superior.

Cooking a roast is such a bloody faff, and I say that as someone who has a double range oven, dishwasher and a DH who entertains the (still very young) children whilst I cook if needs be. I've only made on since Christmas Day! And I quite like cooking generally.

Roast without the hassle and mess of making one yourself plus being able to support a local business during a hellish time for them! Why wouldn't you?!

I don't eat meat, so it's only dh and/or teen Dd, if she's back from university. And yeah, sometimes they buy a Sunday roast from the local pub - they fancy it at the time and it supports the local, pub.

Just like in non lockdowns we might go out for a Sunday lunch and one or both might choose a roast.

Abraxan · 04/04/2021 14:00

Oh, and ours are not £15. All local ones are under a tenner.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 04/04/2021 14:05

Why would it be grim?

We had one delivered on Valentines Day. It was delicious, and home cooked. Very well packaged and delivered right to us... they’d even chilled the wine.

Not at all grim; and a nice treat, as well as supporting local businesses who are struggling massively in lockdown.

Abraxan · 04/04/2021 14:05

And is it any different to most take away food?

I can make a sandwich and a coffee, but still like to go out and buy one someone else has made.

I can make lasagne or a pie, etc myself but sometimes I fancy going to the pub for tea and someone else doing it.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 04/04/2021 14:09

Not something I would do, but if you don't have a good local butcher, work part of the weekend or on shifts, I can see the attraction.

Joinedjustforthispost · 04/04/2021 14:12

Our pub does fresh homemade roasts with locally sourced meat, the Yorkshire pudding is homemade the veg is cooked to perfection and we only pay £8.99 ! So yes il order it, I’ve also got 3 kids one who is severely disabled and my youngest is a baby so anything to help

SamW98 · 04/04/2021 14:28

How is it different to any takeaway? I had fish and chips delivered on Friday could have made my own but I really like someone else cooking and delivering to my front door a couple of times a week. And we should be supporting local businesses doing what they can to survive in these testing times

As someone said above, I'm perfectly capable of making a coffee and I've got a Tassimo but I still like to buy a take out coffee when I go out walking in the woods. I can knock up a sandwich in 2 minutes but sometimes when I'm getting petrol I pick up an ready made sarnie from the little M&S - I really don't get what's difficult to understand

I agree- our local pub does this, locally souced beef and lamb from farms just a few miles away, locally grown organic veg, the chef takes great pride in his work.
Not grim at all.
Rather lovely actually.

wigjuice · 04/04/2021 14:59

Convenience of not having to cook. Supporting local businesses. No cleaning up. Because I just want too.

Derrymum123 · 04/04/2021 15:59

Keeping businesses afloat. I would definitely buy.

threatmatrix · 04/04/2021 17:23

I actually do take away roasts and let me enlighten you. A lot of people live on their own and would never get a roast dinner unless they order one. Also people who are disabled and the young mum that’s worn out. There you go just a few reasons. We are cheaper than your prices.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 04/04/2021 17:24

Haha! Don't knock it til you've tried it... we've had some amazing ones over lockdown!

mummy203 · 04/04/2021 17:28

Maybe if they can afford it they want to support their local or favourite pub so it’s still there when things can reopen. Use it or lose it!

jentinquarantino20 · 04/04/2021 17:30

Could be self isolating not able to buy the ingredients or feeling well enough to cook, oven could be broke or maybe they just want to have a day off from cooking

80sMum · 04/04/2021 17:30

I can't imagine it would be as nice as a home cooked meal. But perhaps if someone is on their own, then it makes more sense, as cooking an entire roast meal for one is a bit of a faff.

katers85 · 04/04/2021 17:31

Same as with any takeaway, means no cooking, little washing up but most importantly it breaks the monotony of lockdown. It’s nice to have a treat and when you cook every other day it’s nice for someone else to cook it, regardless of what it is.

lalafafa · 04/04/2021 17:32

cost us £72 for 4 roasts last Sunday, outrageous really.

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/04/2021 17:34

It's going to be a heck of a lot nicer than the one I can't cook at all because I can't access and cook in my kitchen (not particularly wheelchair accessible)...

Just because you can't see the value in it or the need for it, doesn't mean this applies to everyone!

KatChocolate · 04/04/2021 17:34

Our local does AMAZING takeaway roasts! That is why! Grin

TillyTopper · 04/04/2021 17:36

I love a takeaway roast dinner. It means we can all have the meat we choose; I don't have to spend ages getting all the timing right, and there is only plates to wash up at the end - WIN!

corcaithecat · 04/04/2021 17:37

Yes, I can't imagine myself spending £15 on a roast dinner as a takeaway unless I was feeling really flush.

To be fair, I rarely eat dinner out anyway as I'm usually disappointed with it and end up thinking my food tastes much better than this.

Heyyyyhey91 · 04/04/2021 17:38

Their kitchen is being redone so there is no access to any cooker

jamdonut · 04/04/2021 17:39

£15 !!! I bought one each for me and my partner , a couple of weeks back, for £8.50 each... absolutely gorgeous, as if I had cooked it myself, and enough meat for the following day too! This was from a small cafe nearby.
It was a treat to not cook and wash up!

Nohomemadecandles · 04/04/2021 17:40

You really don't understand? Or you wanted to feel superior?

It doesn't take a lot to understand people want a roast but either can't or don't want to cook one.

Solved that one for you.
