To wonder why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

I get supporting local pubs, but I just don't understand why anyone would get a takeaway roast?

Pubs are charging £15 for a one course Sunday roast (every week, not just Easter). Which isn't exactly cheap. I would have thought this would be pretty grim once you get it home, and a home cooked roast is far superior.

At 6.45 tootle back into kitchen and take out meat. Leave spuds in but turn them and turn down the oven and put in plates, and meat platter

Drain fat from roasting tin leaving just a bit and the meaty juices and the roasted onion - pop on the gas and add a desert spoon of flour. Call husband to carve. Add reserved juices to roasting tin, stirring all the time. Depending on flavour add a lamb stockpot and of course a glug of wine. Pour hot water into gravy boat. Pop 1st bowl of veg in microwave on high for 2 mins

DH carries through meat platter and plates. Gravy simmers gently

...and of course, "the kitchen is SPOTLESS at this stage."

What with the 'calling husband to carve' and all the other 495 Easy Steps to a Lamb Roast in 1959, I'm finding this unintentionally hilarious Grin

As the main cook and bottle washer in the family, I would love to get a takeaway roast. Some do three courses locally for under £15. You could mix and match.

For me its not the cooking so much as the clearing up when there are 8 plus people, often ten. I only get help from DH and it is hard work. This weekend I have had texts asking what I am doing today, ie can we come up and eat. I was going to do something on Monday. Is it a sign of the times though, bad manners? When I was young and we went for a meal at my lovely aunties, all the adults pitched in and helped clearing away at the end. Because of this I have cut back. It would be lovely if someone invited me.

Its worth buying it! My mam is here later for dinner. Its alot of work to get it all ready. Can see why people buy it from the pub. !!

RedGoldAndGreene · 04/04/2021 12:25

Because they live alone ? Making a roast for a family isn't a hard but if you live alone and fancy one it's a faff.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/04/2021 12:31

Glad you enjoyed it @GuildfordGal Wink. Happy Easter. Easter Grin

Pugdogmom · 04/04/2021 12:32

My husband did it for me for Mother's Day. He struggles to cook due to illness and he wanted to give me a nice dinner. It was delicious.

There are many reasons why people do it, and tbh, why not?

There is a food app where it avoids food wastage
Pub near where I work
Gives a few reduced roast dinner
Great for colleges who work 12 hour shifts with no canteen
Not Currently available due to covid

I had one a couple of weeks ago. I'm disabled and live alone. I hadn't had a roast (my favourite dinner) in a couple of years. It's not something I'd be capable of making for myself and I enjoyed it more than you can imagine. It was the best £16 I've spent in a very long time! There are probably a lot of other disabled or elderly people living alone who would feel the same

speakout · 04/04/2021 12:43

Sounds a great idea.

And a clean kitchen.

Sansaplans · 04/04/2021 12:43

Same with any takeaway though surely, I would pay it to sit in the pub but wouldn't for a takeaway as I'd be lazy and get the readymade stuff in bags and trays if I couldn't be arsed; but it's great that they exist and it's helping to support pubs too.

fizbosshoes · 04/04/2021 12:45

My DH said this. He cant understand it. He loves cooking a roast, I loathe the epic greasy clean up afterwards.which he appears not to notice
That said I would be worried about the roast potatoes. For me they could make or break it!Blush ...but I completely see why people would go for a take away roast.

Bluntness100 · 04/04/2021 12:47

My DH said this. He cant understand it. He loves cooking a roast

Bet he’d suddenly understand it if he had to clean up afterwards..

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/04/2021 12:48

Out local pub does a fantastic Sunday dinner. We've had take away a few times, very tasty. I have pork because for some reason I can't cook it. I enjoy having no dishes to wash up. I want the pub to be able to open up.

halloumihalloumi · 04/04/2021 12:53

There is a place near us that do delivery of pub food. We have had roast delivered 4-5 times. Excellent every time. Still warm. Delicious.

PumpkinPie2016 · 04/04/2021 13:08

Maybe they don't fancy cooking/struggle cooking a full roast? Or want to support a local business?

The pub in our village does takeaway at the moment and it's very popular.

I personally wouldn't go for takeaway roast but then I don't mind cooking it and there is meat left for a second meal/sandwiches. I can perfectly see why others would though!

My parents have had takeaway roast - there is only the two of them so no point in buying a big joint. Dad likes medium roast beef whereas mum prefers chicken/turkey, so if they have takeaway, they can have their preferences. Plus, my mum works in a care home so often works Sunday and doesn't want to cook/have all the clearing after even if my Dad does most of it.

GintyMcGinty · 04/04/2021 13:10

Its no different from any other takeaway.

Sometimes its nice to have other people cook, not pots and pans to clean up afterwards.

saraclara · 04/04/2021 13:12

You could just as easily say "...to wonder why anyone gets a takeaway curry/Chinese/pizza/fish and chips". Why is it only the roast dinner that you don't understand, OP?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 04/04/2021 13:13

@IHaveBrilloHair

They are a total pain to make, especially if you live on your own. Are you always this judgey?

Ariela · 04/04/2021 13:26

On of our almost local pubs under normal circumstances would be HEAVING on a Sunday, they've won awards for their roast. We've been supporting the pub by having 1 roast per month, it's great as I can have lamb, DH beef and DD veggie or chicken. I'd never cook all 3. We warm the plates in the oven, go pick up and serve, it's always piping hot and lovely with roast potatoes, 3 veg and all the trimmings. Effort involved: 1 x 15 minute drive, putting plates in oven to warm.
Vs cooking a whole roast? Aside from which we like the odd treat Sunday roast out so wish this pub to continue in business.

My friend lives on her own miles from any friends or relatives, but opposite a well known for its roast dinners cafe. Despite being on a tiny budget she supports this cafe as a treat about every 6 weeks. I sometimes send her the money to treat herself. Likewise she would NEVER manage to faff with cooking herself a roast dinner, for 1 it's not worth the effort.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 04/04/2021 13:30
  1. I like a Sunday roast.
  2. I HATE cooking, I work, and have 2 kids, and I'm bloody tired by the end of the week.
  3. I would rather spend time in the garden with my family than stuck in the kitchen cooking and clearing up all the pots and pans for hours on end.
  4. From our local pub they're delicious and very cheap, costs £32 for 2 adults and 2 kids.

Everybody does what they want to do and what's right for their family, exactly as it should be!

Glittertwins · 04/04/2021 13:40

I think takeaway roasts are a great idea!

It's a lot of faff for a single person or a couple or people with small appetites. It's not easy getting a small joint for home without overcooking by accident or having to get a far bigger one because that all that was available.

pumpkintree · 04/04/2021 13:47

@MixedUpFiles

Our local pub has done some amazing Sunday roasts. Pub might be a bit of a misnomer, it’s a bit more high-end than that. We can’t eat there in-person right now, the food is amazing, and we want them to stay in business.

We’ve been intentional spending money at local restaurants as much as possible for the last year, despite the fact that even when it had been allowed, we never eat inside. We want our favorites to survive. Not all of them have, but we are going to keep trying.

Disclaimer: We used to eat out 4-5 times a week so I know we aren’t the average family in terms of restaurant budget.

Are you food critics? 4-5 times a week? How lovely! What do you enjoy most about eating out?
RedGoldAndGreene · 04/04/2021 13:53

This is my local pub and they do great food and desserts.

£15 per (adult) head for other takeaways is not outrageous imo. Not many places where you can get away paying £10 per adult
