Says thanks to bus driver

Why do ppl do this? Why thank for a journey that u have paid for? And the driver hopefully drove safely but that's their jobs. So why say thanks? I don't get it

Do you not say thank you to a cashier or have a short chat (no not a queue-delaying chinwag) but a quick exchange? It's called manners, being polite and being nice- and it just helps us all feel better

Saying please and thank you is fine. It's a bit of an assumption to say that everyone feels better having a quick exchange at the till though. But I guess that's where self serve tills come in, if you are anti-social and just want to get in and out of the shop.

It's a sad indictment of society when saying thank you is derided as virtue-signalling

It is virtue-signalling when you know full well the driver can't hear you.

I'm not sure I've said thank you when getting off a tram - because I may be a couple of carriages down. Is that really a thing? If you are getting off at the front, maybe, but I thought that was usually where you get on if you need to pay.

BackforGood · 03/04/2021 15:48

Shame you didn't set up the poll OP.

Interesting you haven't been back to comment, in almost 6 hours, and 18 pages in. Hmm

As everyone has said. It really is pretty basic manners.
I can't understand why anyone wouldn't.

FreezerBird · 03/04/2021 16:03

@MrsMoastyToasty

Its drummed into us by our parents from a very young age. In Bristol we even have the t shirt.
Indeed. I'm from the west country; it's basically the law there.
FreezerBird · 03/04/2021 16:05

And also in Bristol, there's this:

TheNestedIf · 03/04/2021 16:15

There's an actual "Cheers Drive"?

That's it. I'm moving back home.

Coulddowithanap · 03/04/2021 16:20

Wow OP, just wow.

Of course you thank the driver! So they are getting paid but I bet they have to deal with alot of rubbish throughout the day. Kindness is free and could possibly be the only kind person they have encountered. But then I say please and thank you to anyone even the Alexa 😬😬😬

Freyaismyname · 03/04/2021 16:27

I can't believe you've even had to ask this question?! It says a lot about you as a person ConfusedHmm

FreezerBird · 03/04/2021 16:29

@TheNestedIf

There's an actual "Cheers Drive"?

That's it. I'm moving back home.

I know. I've never lived in Bristol, and rarely went there even having grown up in Somerset but it is my favourite city now and a piece of me will always reside on Cheers Drive.

As you were me babbers.

HypocriteHunter · 03/04/2021 17:33

No prizes for guessing which one you use....

MaLarkinn · 03/04/2021 17:46

I live in Ireland and this has basically been written into our constitution Grin

You'd be given the side eye here if you didn't say thank you to the driver!

Dee1975 · 03/04/2021 17:52

Because it’s polite and good manners.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 03/04/2021 18:12

@BrumBoo

You always thank drive. What's wrong with you?
"Cheers Drive!", with a thumbs up. Grin
InsufferablePerformanceFather · 03/04/2021 18:13

Basic manners. I thank a hairdresser even though I pay them. I thank our postie and our bin chaps when I see them. I thank the bus or cab driver. It's just good manners.

LucieStar · 03/04/2021 18:14

Eh? Do you never say thank you in a restaurant or a shop when paying for your goods? It doesn't matter that you've paid, most people with manners say it instinctively without thinking.

Sleepdeprivedmama1 · 03/04/2021 18:20

Manners my dear.

Do you not say thank you to anyone who isn't paid to do a job in which they are processing something for you?

I'm a mother, I chose to be a mother and my kids thank me for cooking, bathing them, taking them to the park. Its my job to look after them but do I not deserve a thank you?

Pollypudding · 03/04/2021 18:31

Dear @hesnearly3
Thank you for starting this thread. It has been lovely to read the responses and realise how many polite, kind people there are on MN.
In response to your question:
Good manners
Kindness
Social connectedness
Expressing gratitude has a positive effect on the wellbeing of the receiver AND giver (you may consider this a good enough reason to start saying thanks)
Yes on the thanking of bus drivers, hairdressers, cabin crew, waiters, work colleagues etc. collections for excursions, clapping when plane lands- also used to clap at the cinema (this must have been when there was a projectionist Smile).
Also when I go abroad I learn and use the relevant word for thanks.
I would probably even thank a Traffic Warden who handed me a ticket- it is that ingrained.
There has been a campaign running in healthcare for the past few years called “Civility Saves lives” - this recognises the adverse effects of rudeness on staff performance and therefore patient safety.
Have a lovely Easter/Spring break all and THANK YOU for reading

2bazookas · 03/04/2021 18:55

It's courtesy. I also thank taxi drivers, people who serve me in shops, , the tesco home delivery person hairdresser, dentist, GP staff, even though they are all paid to do their job.

DamsonTrousers · 03/04/2021 19:10

I always say thanks because it’s a courtesy and it’s a pleasant thing to do. Beats wandering around not engaging with anyone. Do you say thanks to cashiers in the supermarket and taxi drivers? Or do you blank them too?

Sceptre86 · 03/04/2021 19:24

Good manners. Do you not say thank you when a waiter or waitress brings your food to the table?

Serena1977 · 03/04/2021 20:01

As the wife of a bus driver, I know he really appreciates being thanked.

It certainly beats being verbally attacked daily, people not paying, threatening behaviour, the food and drinks containers being left, vomit, faeces and people having sex, not wearing masks, closing the windows and one particularly memorable afternoon being coshed with a knuckle duster for his takings. (Offender caught and jailed for 4 years).

Pebbledashery · 03/04/2021 20:04

@serena1977 gosh that's awful. I'm thankful to your husband xx

LegendDairy · 03/04/2021 20:09

Because the driver is a human and I am thankful for them.
